coolant escaping from the radiator.
REMOVAL
Water Pump Removal
1. Drain coolant. Refer toCO-9, "DRAINING ENGINE COOLANT".
CAUTION:
Perform when the engine is cold.
2. Remove the following parts.
lEngine under cover
lAlternator, water pump and air compressor belt
Refer to drive beltEM-13, "
Removal and Installation".
3. Remove water pump.
lCoolant will leak from the cylinder block, so have a receptacle ready below.
CAUTION:
lHandle the water pump vane so that it does not contact any other parts.
lWater pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit.
Water Pump Housing Removal
1. Perform step 1 and 2 of “Water Pump Removal”.
2. Remove alternator.
3. Remove oil level gauge.
CAUTION:
Plug the oil level gauge guide opening to prevent oil pan from entering foreign materials.
4. Remove bolts mounting water pipe.
5. Remove water pump housing.

2. Remove exhaust manifold and three way catalyst assembly. Refer toEM-22, "EXHAUST MANIFOLD
AND THREE WAY CATALYST".
3. Remove water pipe.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
lVisually check that there is no significant dirt or rusting on the
water pump body and vane.
lCheck that there is no looseness in the vane shaft, and that it
turns smoothly when rotated by hand.
lIf there are any unusualness, replace the water pump assembly.
INSTALLATION
lInstall in the reverse order of removal
lWhen inserting water pipe end to cylinder block, apply a neutral detergent to o-ring. Then insert it immedi-
ately.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
lCheck for coolant leaks using radiator cap tester. Refer toCO-9, "LEAK CHECK".

INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
lPlace a string so that it is caught in the valves of the thermostat
and water control valve. Immerse fully in a container filled with
water. Heat while stirring. (The example in the figure shows the
thermostat.)
lThe valve opening temperature is the temperature at which the
valve opens and the falls from the thread.
lContinue heating. Check the full-open lift amount.
NOTE:
The full-open lift amount standard temperature for the water
control valve is the reference value.
lAfter checking the full-open lift amount, lower the water temper-
ature and check the valve closing temperature.

INSTALLATION
lInstall in the reverse order of removal paying attention to the following.
Installation of Thermostat and Water Control Valve
lInstall the thermostat and water control valve with the whole cir-
cumference of each flange part fit securely inside the rubber
ring. (The example in the figure shows the thermostat.)
lInstall the thermostat with the jiggle valve facing upwards. (The
position deviation may be within the range of±10°)
lInstall the water control valve with the up-mark facing up and the
frame center part facing upwards. (The position deviation may
be within the range of±10°)
Heater Pipe Installation
lFirst apply a neutral detergent to the O-ring, then quickly insert the insertion parts of the heater pipe into
the installation holes.
