fast ened, the00E9 seat belt warning lamp comes
on for six seconds every time af ter switching on
th e ignition. Af terth eve hicle is star ted, it goes
out as soon as the driver's and the co-driver's

Information on the automatic co-d rive r airbag

The co-driver airbag can only be deplo yed in the
eve nt of an accident if thePA SSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp is off. If the co-driver seat is
occupied, make sure, bo thbefore and during the
jou rney ,th at thest atus of the co-driver airbag is
cor rect (/ page 34).

the components of the
re stra int sy stem may deploy unnecessarily on

R There are heavy objects on the front

seat and the front passenger seat is unoc‐
cupied. #

Each vehicle occupant must make sure of the
fo llowing:
R Fasten seat belts cor rectly. Pregnant
wo men must take particular care to
ensure that the lap belt ne ver lies across
th e abdomen.
R Adopt the cor rect seat position and keep
as faraw ay as possible from the airbags.
R Obser vethefo llowing information. #
Always make sure that there are no
objects between the airbag and vehicle
occupant. To
avo idtherisks resulting from the deployment
of an airbag, each vehicle occupant must obser ve
th efo llowing information in particular:
R Before starting your journe y,adjust your seat
cor rectl y;bo th th e driver's and co-driver seat
should be mo ved as far back as possible.
When doing so, alw ays obser vethe informa‐
tion on the cor rect driver's seat position
(/ page 69).
R Only hold thesteering wheel bythesteering
wheel rim. This allows the airbag tobe fully
deplo yed.
R Always lean against the seat backrest when
th eve hicle is in motion. Do not lean forw ards
or against the door or side windo w.You may
ot herwise be in the deployment area of the
airbags.
R Alwayske ep your feet on thefloor. Do not put
yo ur feet on the cockpit, forex ample. Your
fe et may otherwise be in the deployment area
of the airbag.
R Ifch ildren are tr avelling in theve hicle,
obser vethe additional no tes (/ page37).
R Alwaysstow and secure objects cor rectly. Objects in
theve hicle interior may pr event an air‐
bag from functioning cor rectl y.Each vehicle
occupant must alw ays make sure of thefo llowing
in particular:
R There are no people, animals or objects
between theve hicle occupants and an airbag.
R There are no objects between the seat, door
and door pillar (B-pillar).
R There are no hard objects, e.g. coat hangers,
hanging on the grab handles or coat hooks.
R There are no accessory parts, such as mobile
navigation devices, mobile phones or cup
holders, attached totheve hicle within the
deployment area of an airbag, e.g. on the
cockpit, on the door, on the side window or
on the side trim.
In addition, no connecting cables, tensioning
st ra ps or retaining stra ps must be routed or
attached totheve hicle within the deployment
area of an airbag. Alw ays comply with the
accesso rymanufacturer's ins tallation instruc‐
tions and, in particular, the no tes on suitable
places for ins tallation.
R There are no heavy, sharp-edged or fragile
objects in the poc kets of your clo thing. Store
such objects in a suitable place. Limited pr

Objects trapped under the co-driver seat can
inter fere with the function of the automatic
co-driver airbag shutoff or damage the sys‐
te m. #
Do not store any objects under the co-
driver seat. #
When the co-driver seat is occupied,
make sure that no objects are trapped
under the co-driver seat. When
fitting a child restra int sy stem tothe co-
driver seat, alw ays make sure of thefo llowing:
R Ensure that thech ild restra int sy stem is posi‐
tioned cor rectly (/ page 40).
R Always comply with thech ild restra int sy stem
manufacturer's ins tallation instructions.
R Never place objects (e.g. cushions) under or
behind thech ild restra int sy stem.
R The entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the sitting sur face of the
co-driver seat.
R The ba ckrest of thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must, as far as possible, be
re sting on the seat backrest of the co-driver
seat.
R The child restra int sy stem must not touch the
ro of or be put under stra in by the head
re stra ints. Adjust the seat backrest inclina‐
tion and the head restra int setting accord‐
ingly. &
WARNING Risk of injury or death dueto
objects between the seat sur face and the
ch ild restra int sy stem
Objects between the sitting sur face and the
ch ild restra int sy stem could af fect the func‐
tion of the automatic co-driver airbag shutoff. #
Do not place any objects between the
sitting sur face and thech ild restra int
sy stem. #
Make sure that the entire base of the
ch ild restra int sy stem is resting on the
sitting sur face of the co-driver seat. #
Make sure that the backrest of the
fo rw ard-facing child restra int sy stem is,
as far as possible, resting on the seat
backrest of the co-driver seat. #
Always comply with thech ild restra int
sy stem manufacturer's ins tallation
instructions. A person on
the co-driver seat must obser vethe
fo llowing information:
R Fasten seat belts cor rectly (/ page 28).
R Sit in an almost upright seat position with
their back against the seat backrest.
R Sit with their feet resting on thefloor, if possi‐

R The co-driver transfers their weight bysup‐
porting themselves on a vehicle armrest.

a disabled front passenger airbag
The front passenger airbag is disabled when
th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
is lit.
A person in the front passenger seat could
th en, forex ample, come into con tact with the
ve hicle interior, especially if the person is sit‐
ting too close tothe cockpit.
If th e front passenger seat is occupied,
alw ays ensure that:
R the classification of the person in the
front passenger seat is cor rect and the
front passenger airbag is enabled or disa‐
bled in accordance with the person in the
front passenger seat.
R the front passenger seat has been mo ved
as far back as possible.
R the person is seated cor rectly. #
Both before and during the journe y,
ensure that thest atus of the front
passenger airbag is cor rect. If
th e co-driver seat is occupied, the classification
of the person or child restra int sy stem on the co-
driver seat take s place af terth e co-driver airbag
shutoff self-test. The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp displa ys thest atus of the co-driver
airbag.
Alw ays obser vethe no tes on the function of the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
(/ page 34). Fu
nction of thePA SSENGER AIR BAG indicator
lamps The
PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is
inoperative. When the ignition is switched on, it
lights up brief lyand then goes out again. Only the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp displa ys
th est atus of the co-driver airbag. The
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp may be
lit continuously or be off.
Ve hicles without an automatic co-driver airbag
shutoff ha vea special sticke r af fixe dto the side
of the cockpit on the co-driver side
(/ page 45).
Self-test of automatic co-driver airbag shutoff
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
lights up for appro ximately six seconds du ring the
self-test when the ignition is switched on.
The status of the co-driver airbag is displa yed
af te rth e self-tes t:
R PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF is not lit: the co-
driver airbag may deploy during an accident.
R PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF lights up continu‐
ously: the co-driver airbag is disabled. It will
not be deplo yed in theeve nt of an accident.
If th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
and the0075 restra int sy stem warning lamp light
up simultaneousl y,the co-driver seat may not be
used. Also in this case, do not fit a child restra int
sy stem tothe co-driver seat. Ha vethe automatic
co-driver airbag shutoff checked and repaired
immediately at a qualified specialist workshop.

lamp is off, the front passenger airbag can
deploy in theeve nt of an accident.
The child could be stru ck bythe airbag. #
Always ensure that the front passenger
airbag is disabled. The PASSENGER AIR
BA G OFF indicator lamp must be lit. #
NEVER use a rear wa rd-facing child
re stra int sy stem on a seat with an ENA‐
BLED FRONT AIRB AG. This can result in
th e DEAT H of or SERIOUS INJURY tothe
CH ILD. When
fitting a child restra int sy stem tothe co-
driver seat, obser vetheve hicle-specific informa‐
tion (/ page 46).
Depending on thech ild restra int sy stem and the
st ature of thech ild, thePA SSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp may be off. In this case, do
not fit th ere ar wa rd-facing child restra int sy stem
to the co-driver seat.
Ins tead, fit th ere ar wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem toa suitable rear seat.
Af terfitting a forw ard-facing child restra int
sy stem tothe co-d rive r seat: depending on the
ch ild restra int sy stem and thest ature of the
ch ild, PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF may be lit con‐
tinuously or be off. Alw ays obser vethefo llowing
information. &

If yo u secure a child in a forw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem on the front passenger seat
th at is positioned too close tothe cockpit, in
th eev ent of an accident, thech ild could:
R come into con tact with th eve hicle interior
if th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit, forex ample
R bestru ck bythe airbag if thePA SSENGER
AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp is off. #
Always mo vethe front passenger seat
as far back as possible and fully retract
th e seat cushion length adjustment.
While doing so, alw ays make sure that
th e shoulder belt stra p is cor rectly
ro uted from the seat belt outlet of the
ve hicle tothe shoulder belt guide on the
ch ild restra int sy stem. The shoulder belt
st ra p must be routed forw ards and
down wards fr omthe seat belt outlet. If
necessar y,adjust the seat belt outlet
and the front passenger seat accord‐
ingly. #
Always comply with thech ild restra int
sy stem manufacturer's ins tallation
instructions. When
fitting a child restra int sy stem tothe co-
driver seat, obser vetheve hicle-specific informa‐
tion (/ page 46).
If a person is sitting on the co-d rive r seat:
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF may be lit continuously
or be off, depending on the person's stature.
A person on the co-driver seat must alw ays
obser vethefo llowing information:
R Ifth e co-driver seat is occupied byan adult or
a person with a stature cor responding tothat
of an adult, thePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp must be off. This indicates that
th e co-driver airbag is enabled.
If th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit continuousl y,an adult or person
with a build cor responding tothat of an adult
should not use the co-driver seat.
Ins tead, they should use a rear seat.
R Ifth e co-driver seat is occupied bya person
of smaller stature (e.g. a teenager or small
adult), thePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indica‐

bled in accordance with the person in the
front passenger seat.
R The person is seated properly with a cor‐
rectly fastened seat belt.

R switching off the engine
To restart theve hicle, switch the ignition off
and switch it back on (/ page136). Depend‐
ing on the type and se verity of the accident, it
may possible that theve hicle can no longer
be star ted.

Be diligent
Bear in mind that negligence when securing a
ch ild in thech ild restra int sy stem may ha veseri‐
ous consequences. Alw ays be diligent and secure
a ch ild carefully before each journe y.
To impr ove pr otection forch ildren younger than
12 years old or under 1.50 m in height,
Mercedes-Benz recommends you obse rveth efo l‐
lowing information:
R Always secure thech ild in a child restra int
sy stem suitable forth is Mercedes-Benz vehi‐
cle.
R The child restra int sy stem must be appropri‐
ate tothe age, weight and size of thech ild.
R The vehicle seat must be suitable forfitting a
ch ild restra int sy stem (/ page 40).
Ac cident statistics show that children secured on
th ere ar seats are general lysafer than children
secured on the front seats. Forth is reason,
Mercedes-Benz strongly advises that youfit a
ch ild restra int sy stem toare ar seat.
The generic term ch ildrestra int sy stem
The generic term child restra int sy stem is used in
th is set of Operating Instructions. A child
re stra int sy stem is, forex ample:
R a baby car seat
R are ar wa rd-facing child seat
R afo rw ard-facing child seat
R ach ild boos ter seat with a backrest and seat
belt guides
The child restra int sy stem must be appropriate to
th e age, weight and size of thech ild.
Obser velaws and regulations
Alw ays obser vethe legal requirements when
using a child restra int sy stem in theve hicle.
Make sure that thech ild restra int sy stem is
appr oved in accordance with theva lid test speci‐
fi cations and guidelines. You can obtain fur ther
information at a qualified specialist workshop. Mercedes-Benz
recommends that you use a
Mercedes-Benz Service Cent reforth is purpose.
Only use app rove dch ild restra int sy stems
Only child restra int sy stems with the UNECE
st andard UN-R44 are appr oved for use in the
ve hicle.
Information on child restra int sy stem appr oval
categories and de tails on the appr oval label on
th ech ild restra int sy stem (/ page 40). De
tecting risks, avoiding danger Securing sy
stems forch ild restra int sy stems
in theve hicle
Only use thefo llowing securing sy stems forch ild
re stra int sy stems:
R the ISOFIX securing rings
R the seat belt sy stem of theve hicle
R theTo pTe ther anchorages
Fitting an ISOFIX child restra int sy stem is prefer‐
re d.
Simply attaching tothe securing rings on the
ve hicle can reduce therisk of fitting thech ild
re stra int sy stem incor rectl y.
When securing a child with the integrated seat
belt of the ISOFIX child restra int sy stem, alw ays
comply wi th the permissible gross weight forthe
ch ild and child restra int sy stem (/ page 42).
Ad vantage of a rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem
It is preferable totranspo rta baby or a small
ch ild in a suitable rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem. In this case, thech ild sits in the opposite
direction tothe direction of tra vel and faces
ba ckwa rds.
Ba bies and small children ha vecompa ratively
we ak neck muscles in relation tothe size and
we ight of their head. The risk of injury tothe cer‐
vical spine during an accident can be reduced in
a re ar wa rd-facing child restra int sy stem.
