Re leasing the brake pedal will allow youto mo ve
th eve hicle freely, forex ample, topush it or tow

The au tomatic transmission shifts thro ugh the
individual gears automatically when it is in trans‐
mission position 005B. This is determ ined bythe
fo llowing factors:

R Driving speed

This function is only available forve hicles with 7-
speed automatic transmission.
At speeds of up to9 km/h, you can swit ch
between transmission positions 005Band 005Ewith‐
out applying the brakes. This helps when rocking
th eve hicle free out of snow or slush. #

shift range which allo wseasy acceleration
and deceleration. Todo this, the automatic
transmission shifts down one or more gears
and restricts the shift range.

wa rds or backwards.
The drive program selected appears inthe
multifunction displa y.Manual shifting
Yo
u can change gear manually with thesteering
wheel gearshift paddles when the automatic
transmission is in position 005B. If permissible,the
automatic transmission shifts toa higher or lo wer
ge ar depending on thesteering wheel gearshift
paddle that has been pulled.
To shift the automatic transmission manuall y,you
ha ve thefo llowing options:
R Temp orary setting in all drive programs
exc ept ¥ with simultaneous limitation
(/ page 143) of the shift range.
R Perm anent setting in drive program ¥.

Toshift up: pullsteering wheel gearshift pad‐

If th e engine speed is suf ficient, the auto‐
matic transmission shifts up tothe next gear.
If th e maximum engine speed is reached in the
cur rently engaged gear and you continue to
accelerate, the automatic transmission will not
shift up automaticall y.Alw ays make sure that the
engine speed does not reach there d area of the
re v counter. Obser vethege arshift recommenda‐
tion in the multifunction displa y.When the engine
re aches its maximum speed, the fuel supply is
cut topreve ntthe engine from overrev ving. #
Toshift down: pullsteering wheel gearshift
paddle 1.

maximum speed when shifting down, the
automatic transmission shifts tothe next

If yo u pull and hold thesteering wheel gear‐

The gearshift recommendations assist you in
adopting an economical driving style. It will

Use DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) when driv‐
ing downhill off-road (/ page160).
If yo ufa ilto adapt your driving style, 4MATIC can
neither reduce therisk of an accident nor over‐
ri de the la wsof ph ysics. 4MATIC cannot take
account of road, weather and traf fic conditions.
4MATIC is only an aid. You are responsible espe‐
cially for maintaining a safe dis tance from the
ve hicle in front, forve hicle speed, for braking in
good time and forst ay ing in lane. AIRMATIC
Fu
nction of AIRMATIC AIRMATIC is an air suspension sy
stem with an all-
ro und le vel control sy stem, which also ensures
th e best possible suspension and cons tant
ground clearance, even wi tha laden vehicle.
When you drive at speed, theve hicle is lo wered
automatically toimpr ovedriving saf ety and to
re duce fuel consum ption. There is also the option
of raising theve hicle le vel while driving slowl y,
e.g. for driving off public roads. The AIRMATIC
settings are dependent on the drive program
selection.
AIRMATIC consists of thefo llowing functions and

R all-round air suspension
R speed-dependent lo wering toreduce fuel con‐
sum ption
R high le velfo r greater ground clearance when
driving slowly; set with drive program Lift

If yo u or other people come into contact with

Immediately rinse fuel off your skin with
soap and water. #
If fuel comes into contact with your
ey es, immediately rinse them thor‐

Never mix petrol with diesel fuel. *

in the instrument clus ter may not be displa yed

is frozen, drive for at
least 20 minutes and then park theve hicle for a
minimum of 30 seconds, so that the le vel is cor‐
re ctly displa yed. In extreme winter conditions,
th e time needed todetect the amount topped up
may be considerably longer. Park theve hicle in a
