Electronic control units are
fitted in your vehicle.
Control units process data which, forex ample,
th ey receive from vehicle sensors, generate
th emselves or exch ange between themselves.
Some contro l units arerequ ired forth e safe oper‐
ation of your vehicle, some assist you when driv‐
ing, such as driver assis tance sy stems, while oth‐
ers enable comfort or inf otainment functions. The
following pr ovides you with general informa‐
tion rega rding data processing in theve hicle.
Ad ditional information rega rding exactly which
data in your vehicle are collected, sa ved and
transmit tedto third parties, and for what pur‐
pose, can be found in the information directly
re lated tothe functional characteristics in ques‐
tion in their respective operating instructions.
This information is also available online and,
depending on theve hicle equipment, digitally.
Pe rsonal data
Every vehicle is identified bya unique vehicle
identification number. Depending on the count ry,
th is vehicle identification number can be used by,
fo rex ample, go vernmental authorities todeter‐
mine the identity of theow ner. The reare other
possibilities for using data collected from the
ve hicle toidentify theow ner or driver, su chas
th e licence plate number.
Therefore, data generated or processed bycon‐
trol units may be attributa bletoa person or,
under cer tain conditions, become att ributable to
a person. Depending on which vehicle data are
av ailable, it may be possible tomake inferences
about, forex ample, your driving behaviour, your
location, your route or your use pat tern s.
Legal requirements rega rding the disclosure
of data
If legally requ ired todo so, manufacturers are, in
individual cases, legally obliged toprov ide gov‐
ernmental entities, upon request and tothe
ex tent requ ired, data stored bythe manufacturer.
Fo rex ample, this may be the case during the
in ve stigation of a criminal of fence.
Go vernmental entities are themselves, in individ‐
ual cases and within the applicable legal frame‐
wo rk, authorised toread out data from theve hi‐
cle. In the case of an accident, information that
can help with an in vestigation can, therefore, be
ta ke n from the airbag cont rol unit, forex ample.
Operational data in theve hicle
This is data rega rding the operation of theve hi‐
cle, which ha vebeen processed bycontrol units.
This includes thefo llowing data, forex ample:
R vehicle status information such as the speed,
longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration,
number of wheel revo lutions or thefast ened
seat belts display
R ambient conditions, such as temp erature, rain
sensor or dis tance sensor 24

The activation
thre sholds forth e components of

ev aluation of the sensor values measured at vari‐
ous points in theve hicle. This process is pre-
em ptive in nature. The triggering/deployment of
th e components of there stra int sy stem should
ta ke place in good time at thest art of the colli‐
sion.
Fa ctors whi chcan only be seen and measured
af te r a collision has occur red cann otplay a deci‐
sive role in airbag deployment. Nordothey pro‐
vide an indication of airbag deployment.
The vehicle may be deformed significantly with‐
out an airbag being deplo yed. This is the case if
only parts which are relatively easily deformed
are af fected and thera te ofvehicle deceleration
is not high. Con versely, an airbag may be
deplo yedeve nth ough theve hicle suf fers only
minor deformation. If very rigid vehicle parts,
such as longitudinal members, are hit, theve hicle
deceleration may be high enough forth is to hap‐
pen.
Depending on the de tected deployment situation,
th e components of there stra int sy stem can be
activated or deplo yed independently of each
ot her:
R Seat belt tensioner: frontal impact, rear
impact, side impact
R Driver's airbag, front passenger airbag: frontal
impact
R Side airbag: side impact
R Window airbag: side impact, frontal impact
The co-d rive r airbag can only be depl oyed in the
ev ent of an accident if thePA SSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp is off. If the co-driver seat is
occupied, make sure, bo thbefore and during the
jou rney ,th at thest atus of the co-driver airbag is
cor rect (/ page 34). &
WARNING Risk of burn s from hot airbag
components
The airbag parts are hot af ter an airbag has
been deploy ed. #
Do not touch the airbag parts. #
Have a deplo yed airbag replaced at a
qu alified specialist workshop as soon as
possible. Mercedes-Benz
recommends that you ha vethe
ve hicle towe dto aqu alified specialist workshop
af te r an accident. Take this into account, particu‐ larly if a seat belt
tensioner is trig gered or an air‐
bag deplo yed.
If th e seat belt tensioners are trig gered or an air‐
bag is deplo yed, you will hear a bang, and a small
amount of powder may also be released:
R the bang will not generally af fect your hear‐
ing.
R ingeneral, the powder released is not hazard‐
ous tohealth but may cause short-term
breathing dif ficulties topersons suf fering
from as thma or other pulmonary conditions.

immediately or open the window in order to
pr eve nt brea thing dif ficulties. Seat belts

In addition, an incor rectly fastened seat belt
can also cause injuries, forex ample, in the
eve nt of an accident or when braking or
ch anging direction sudden ly. #
Always ensure that all vehicle occupants
ha ve their seat belts fastened cor rectly
and are sitting properl y. Alw
ays obser vethe instructions about the cor rect
driver's seat position and adjusting the seat
(/ page 69).
In order forth e cor rectly wornseat belt topro‐
vide the intended le vel of pr otection, each vehicle
occupant must obser vethefo llowing information:
R The seat belt must not be twis ted and must fit
tightly and snu gly across the body.
R The seat belt must be routed across the
centre of the shoulder and as low down
across the hips as possible.
R The shoulder section of the seat belt should
not touch your neck nor be routed under your
arm or behind your bac k. 28

Objects trapped under the co-driver seat can
inter fere with the function of the automatic
co-driver airbag shutoff or damage the sys‐

Do not store any objects under the co-
driver seat. #
When the co-driver seat is occupied,
make sure that no objects are trapped
under the co-driver seat. When
fitting a child restra int sy stem tothe co-
driver seat, alw ays make sure of thefo llowing:
R Ensure that thech ild restra int sy stem is posi‐
tioned cor rectly (/ page 40).
R Always comply with thech ild restra int sy stem
manufacturer's ins tallation instructions.
R Never place objects (e.g. cushions) under or
behind thech ild restra int sy stem.
R The entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the sitting sur face of the
co-driver seat.
R The ba ckrest of thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must, as far as possible, be
re sting on the seat backrest of the co-driver
seat.
R The child restra int sy stem must not touch the
ro of or be put under stra in by the head
re stra ints. Adjust the seat backrest inclina‐
tion and the head restra int setting accord‐
ingly. &

Objects between the sitting sur face and the

Opening and closing
In
these, or in similar situations, the auto‐
matic high beam will not be deactivated or
will be activated despite the presence of
ot her road users. #
Always obser vethero ad and traf fic con‐
ditions carefully and switch off the high
beam in good time. The
Adaptive Highbeam Assist automatically
swit ches between thefo llowing settings:
R Low beam
R High beam
The sy stem de tects that vehicle lights are
approaching in the opposite direction or driving
ahead of theve hicle.
If yo ur speed is greater than 30 km/h and no
ot her road users are de tected, high beam will
au tomatically be switched on.
If yo ur speed is greater than 25 km/h, the head‐
lamp range will be controlled au tomatical ly
depending on the dis tance from other road users.
High beam will automatically be deactivated in
th efo llowing cases:
R Your speed is lo werth an 25 km/h.
R Other road users ha vebeen de tected.
R The road is suf ficiently illumina ted.
Sy stem limits
Ad aptive Highbeam Assist cannot take thero ad,
we ather or traf fic conditions into consideration.
The de tection of obs tacles may be restricted if:
R visibility is poo r,e.g. in fog, heavy rain or
sno w.
R the sensors are dirty or co vered. Ad
aptive Highbeam Assist is only an aid. You are
re sponsible for ensuring cor rect vehicle lighting
in accordance with the pr evailing light, visibility
and traf fic conditions.
The sy stem's optical sensor is located behind the
windscreen near theove rhead cont rol panel.
Switching Highbeam Assist on/off
Requ irements
R The light switch is in the0058 position. #
Toswitch on: switch on high beam using the
combination switch.
If high beam is au tomatical lyswitched on in
darkness, the00CE indicator lamp on the
multifunction display will light up. #

On very rare occasions, Adaptive Highbeam
Assist Plus may failto recognise other road
users with their own lighting, or may recog‐
nise them too late.
In these, or in similar situations, the auto‐
matic high beam will not be deactivated or
will be activated despite the presence of
ot her road users. #
Always obser vethero ad and traf fic con‐
ditions carefully and switch off the high
beam in good time. Ad
aptive Highbeam Assist Plus cannot take into
account road, weather or traf fic conditions.

R Partial high beam and high beam will be auto‐
matically deactivated.
R The 0057 indicator lamp on the instrument
clus ter will go out. The 00CEsymbol for High‐
beam Assist Plus will remain switched on.
At speeds greater than 30 km/h, Highbeam
Assist Plus will per form thefo llowing actions:
R If no other road users are de tected, high
beam will be switched on.
R Ifot her road users are de tected, part ial high
beam will be switched on.
