Emergency towing procedure
To have your vehicle towed by another vehicle, the towing eyelet must be
installed to your vehicle. Install the towing eyelet using the following procedure.
aTake out the wheel nut wrench and towing eyelet (➞ P. 397)
b Remove the eyelet cover using a
flathead screwdriver.
To protect the bodywork, place a rag
between the screwdriver and the vehi-
cle body as shown in the illustration.
cInsert the towing eyelet into the
hole and tighten partially by
hand.
d Tighten down the towing eyelet
securely using a wheel nut
wrench or hard metal bar.
e Securely attach cables or ch ains to the towing eyelet.
Take care not to damage the vehicle body.
fEnter the vehicle being towed and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, turn the engine switch to “ON”.
gShift the shift lever to N and release the parking brake.

⬛While towing
If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes and steering will
not function, making steering and braking more difficult.
⬛Wheel nut wrench
The wheel nut wrench is stored at the bottom of the front left seat. ( ➞P. 397)
⬛After towing
Remove the towing eyelet and secu rely attach the cover in place.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or seri-
ous injury.
⬛While towing
⚫When towing using cables or chains, avoid sudden starts, etc. which place
excessive stress on the towing eyelets, cables or chains. The towing eyelets,
cables or chains may become damaged, broken debris may hit people, and
cause serious damage.
⚫Do not turn the engine switch “OFF”.
There is a possibility that the steerin g wheel is locked and cannot be oper-
ated.
⬛Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that towing eyelets are instal led securely. If not securely installed,
towing eyelets may come loose during towing.
NOTICE
⬛To prevent damage to the vehicle during emergency towing
Do not secure cables or chains to the suspension components.
⬛When the engine switch malfunctions (vehicles with key-free system)
Since the steering wheel cannot be unloc ked, towing by rope is not possible.

If you think something is wrong
If you notice any of the following symptoms, your vehicle probably
needs adjustment or repair. Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as
possible.
Visible symptoms
⚫Fluid leaks under the vehicle
(Water dripping from the air co nditioning after use is normal)
⚫Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear
⚫High engine coolant temperature warning light flashes or comes on
Audible symptoms
⚫Changes in exhaust sound
⚫Excessive tire squeal when cornering
⚫Strange noises related to the suspension system
⚫Pinging or other noises related to the engine
Operational symptoms
⚫Engine misfire, stumbling or running roughly
⚫Appreciable loss of power
⚫Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking
⚫Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when driving on a level road
⚫Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling, pedal almost touches the
floor

Fuel pump shut off system
If the engine stalls due to a strong external impact, the fuel pump
shut off system may be operating. The fuel pump shut off system is a
device that prevents secondary disasters such as fires by stopping
the supply of fuel to the engine.
Follow the procedure below to restart the engine after the system is
activated
a Turn the engine switch to “ACC” or “OFF”
b Restart the engine
WARNING
⬛Before starting the engine
Inspect the ground under the vehicle.
If you find that fuel has leaked onto th e ground, the fuel system has been dam-
aged and is in need of repair. Do not restart the engine.

When trouble arises

If a warning light turns on
If a warning light remains on or flashes, remain calm and take the
following actions. Even if the warn ing light lights up or flashes then
goes out, it is not a malfunction. However, if the same phenomenon
occurs again, have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.

High coolant temperature warning light
Abnormal engine coolant temperat ure (light changes from flash-
ing to lit as the temperature rises ➞P. 412.)

⦁Malfunction in the electron ic engine control system
⦁Electronic control throttle error
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer immedi-
ately.
Continuously variable transmission warning light✽
Malfunction of the continuously variable transmission electronic
control system
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer immedi-
ately.

⦁Malfunction in the seat belt pr etensioner & force limiter system
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer immedi-
ately.
ABS warning light
Malfunction in the ABS system
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer immedi-
ately.

Electric power steering system warning light (warning buzzer)
Malfunction in EPS (Electric Power Steering) system
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer immedi-
ately.

Electric power steering system warning light (warning buzzer)
Low battery voltage/Electric power steering overheating
➞ Steering wheel operation becomes heavy. Restrain from
operating the steering wheel fo r a short while. When about
10 minutes has passed, it will return to its usual weight.
Front corner sensor/Reverse sensor indicator✽ (warning buzzer)
Master warning light
✽
Malfunction of the front corner sensors or reverse sensor
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.
Slip indicator
⦁Malfunction in the brake assist

Area surrounding radar sensor on rear bumper ( ➞P. 214) is cov-
ered with rain, snow, ice, dirt, etc.
➞ Remove the rain, snow, ice, dirt, etc. If flashing persists even
after some time has elapsed since removal, have the vehicle
inspected at your Toyota dealer.

RCTA OFF indicator✽
Area surrounding radar sensor on rear bumper ( ➞P. 214) is cov-
ered with rain, snow, ice, dirt, etc.
➞ Remove the rain, snow, ice, dirt, etc. If flashing persists even
after some time has elapsed since removal, have the vehicle
inspected at your Toyota dealer.

Brake Override System warning light✽
Malfunction in the Brake Override System
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.
(Lit)
Brake Override System warning light✽
When the Brake Override System is activated
➞ Release your foot from the accelerator pedal
Open door warning light*3✽ (warning buzzer*4)
At least one of the doors or the hood is not completely closed
➞ Close all doors and/or the hood
Low fuel level warning light
Fuel level has become approx. 5.5 L (1.5 gal., 1.2 Imp.gal.) or
lower
➞ Refuel the vehicle
Driver’s/front passenger’s seat belt reminder warning light*6

Driver’s/front passenger’s seat belt is not fastened
➞ Wear a seat belt

Indicates that your vehicle speed reaches or exceeds 120 km/h

*1Low brake fluid level warning buzzer:
The warning buzzer sounds when the vehicle has reached a speed of 5 km/h
(3 mph) or more while the warning light is on. If the buzzer sounds, the brake
fluid may be low.
*2Electric power steering system warning light (yellow):
If it does not turn off, or if it turns on repeatedly, have it inspected at your Toy-
ota dealer.
*3Open door warning light:
The open doors and/or hood are displa yed to the multi-information display
✽.
*4Open door warning buzzer:
The buzzer sounds when at least one of the doors or the hood of the vehicle is
not completely closed and the vehicle’s speed exceeds 5 km/h (3.1 mph).
Tire pressure warning light✽
When the light comes on:
Low tire inflation pressure such as
⦁Natural causes (➞P. 384)
⦁Flat tire ( ➞P. 396)
➞ Adjust the tire inflation pressure (including the spare tire) to
the specified level.
➞ The light will turn off after a few minutes. In case the light
does not turn off even if th e tire inflation pressure is
adjusted, have the system checked by your Toyota dealer.
When the light comes on af ter blinking for 1 minute:
Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system
➞ Have the system checked by your Toyota dealer.

Engine oil deterioration warning light✽
The engine oil replacement is due soon
➞ Have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.
