SENS ORS
While searching for a parking place, the system uses s ide
s ens ors (see fig. 78).
Thes e sens ors are automatically activated below around
30 km/h; during thi s s tage if the driver ha s ju st passed a
s pace that might be us eful for a manoeuvre, the function
can be reques ted using the s pecial button; at this point the
ins tructions for carry ing out the manoeuvre will be s hown
on the dis play. If the function is not requested by the dri-
ver us ing the s pecial button, no information will be di s-
play ed on the ins trument panel. OPERATION
The assi
sted parking manoeuvre can onl y be activated with
the ins trument panel on and at speeds below about 30
km/h. It is divided into the following stages :
❍ Activation: pr
essing the button fig. 79 activates the
s earch stage.
❍ Search: through s ide sens ors, the system continuous -
l y s earches for a free parking space, suitable to the vehi-
cle dimens ions. The driver determine s on which s ide of the
road they intend to park us ing the direction indicators
(if no information i s available from the direction indica-
tors or hazard warning lights, the search takes place on
the passenger side).

IMPORTANT The SEARCH stage in the system logic is
deactivated after about 10 min s if a s uitable parking s pace
i s not identified.
❍ Identification: if the system identifies a free parking
s pace that is a suitable size for the vehicle, it s ignals its
pres ence and indicates the actions required for starting the
manoeuvre.
❍ Manoeuvre : the driver is asked to engage rever se gear
and releas e the steering wheel and manage the accelera-
tor, brake and clutch (in ca se of manual gearbox) or ac-
celerator and brake (in ca se of automatic tran smission).
During the rever se parking manoeuvre, the system man-
ages the s teering wheel automaticall y.
It sugges ts that the manoeuvre be concluded in revers e
gear (if the condition s permit) when the continuou s s ound
of the buzzer for the rear s ensors is hear
d.
IMPORTANT The MANOEUVRE stage in the system log-
ic is deactivated after about 3 min s if the parking ma-
noeuvre ha s not been completed. ❍
Manoeuvre end: if the parking s pace is s ufficient, the
parking manoeuvre i s completed by the system in a s in-
gle movement; the further intervention of the driver i s not
required to po sition the vehicle. If further corrective ma-
noeuvres are required, the system gives back control to the
driver who mus t complete parking manuall y.
IMPORTANT Steering will be realigned after rever sing
when revers e gear is disengaged. The driver mus t com-
plete the manoeuvre manuall y.
The operation of the parking assistance is
based on different components:
❍ front and rear parking sensors;
❍ side sensors;
❍ steering;
❍ wheels and braking system;
❍ instrument panel.
It is necessary to bear in mind that a malfunction
in one of these systems could compromise the op-
eration of the Magic Parking system.

DESCRIPTION OF MANOEUVRING STAGES
Activation
The system is activated by pressing the
Sbutton and, a s
s oon as it is activated, the system starts the s earch stage.
The LED in the button coming on indicate s that the sys-
tem is activated. S ince the system recognis es parking
s paces even when it is deactivated, the system can be ac-
tivated straight away after having driven pas t an adjacent
parking space that is deemed suitable. If the system has
effectively identified a parking space, the s earch stage will
not be performed and the system will notify the driver of
the operations required to carr y out the manoeuvre. S
earch for a parkin g space
During the s earch stage fig. 80 the vehicle s hould con-
tinue following it s route at a s peed lower than approxi-
mately 30 km/h and at a dis tance of around 50 cm to
130 cm from parked car s. A parking s pace is consider ed
s uitable if it i s about 130 cm longer than the dimen sions
of the vehicle.
There are two po ssible types of parking:
❍ parking space about 160 cm longer than the dimen-
sions of the car: parking can take place in a single ma-
noeuvre;
❍ parking space about 130 cm longer than the dimen-
sions of the car: parking in more than one manoeuvre,
where only the first one can be carried out b y automatic
s teering management (the s ubsequent manoeuvres are en-
tirely the res ponsibility of the driver).

To select the s earch and manoeuvring s ide, the driver
mus t:
1) D Choos
e to carry out the search for the s pace and
the manoeuvre on the pa ssenger side with:
❍ the direction indicator in the middle po sition;
❍ the hazard warning light s on;
❍ the hazard warning lights on and the direction indi-
cator in the pa ssenger side pos ition;
❍ the direction indicator pointing toward s the passenger
s ide.
2) F Choos
e to carry out the search for the space and the
manoeuvre on the driver side with:
❍ the direction indicator in the driver’ s s ide pos ition;
❍ the hazard warning lights on and the direction indi-
cator in the driver side pos ition;
The system will notify the driver, on the s ide in which the
s earch and the manoeuvre are taking place b y means of ded-
icated messages in the instrument panel dis play and the
symbols (
F and
D) differ
ent on the right and left s ides.
The search will, however, take place on both sides , there-
fore it is possible to make the selection us ing the direc-
tion indicators even when having ju st driven pas t a park-
ing space that is deemed suitable. During the s
earch stage, the s peed must not exceed 30
km/h; when 25 km/h have been reached, the driver i s s ig-
nalled to decreas e the speed; if a s peed of 30 km/h i s ex-
ceeded, the system is deactivated; in thi s cas e, the sys-
tem mus t be restarted by pressing the button
S.
If the Lane crossing function is activated (see “Exterior
lights ” paragraph) the s earch for the parking space always
takes place on the pa ssenger side.
If the parking sens ors are activated during the search for
a parking s pace (see “Front and rear parking sens ors”
paragraph), the operation of the Magic Parking system
i s deactivated.
The search for the parking space and the
parking manoeuvres must be carried out in
compliance with the current regulations of the
Highway Code.

Identifying a parking space fig. 81
If the system identifies a suitable parking s pace between
two stationary vehicles or between other obs tacles (e.g. ob-
jects with an extens ive side surface such as vehicles , box-
e s, etc.) it will indicate that it ha s found a s pace and that
parking is possible. If the po sition reached is already s uit-
able at the beginning of the manoeuvre, the system will ad-
vis e the driver to engage rever se gear, otherwis e it will re-
ques t moving further forward. On the reques
t to engage revers e gear the driver s hould stop
the vehicle and engage rever se in order to confirm the wi sh
to start the manoeuvre; if the driver continue s driving, af-
ter about 10 metres the system will no longer cons ider the
parking space identified and will start the s ear
ch for new
s uitable space.
Manoeuvre
The driver will have control over the movement s of the ve-
hicle us ing the accelerator, brake and clutch (onl y on ver-
s ions with manual gearbox) whil st the system will auto-
matically manage the s teering to enter the parking s pace
identified in the be st possible wa y.
During the manoeuvre it will be po ssible to take advantage
of the information coming from the parking s ensors (when
rever sing it i s advi sable to reach the area where the rear
s ens ors provide a continuous tone signal), but it i s always
advis able to keep an ey e on the surrounding area.
The vehicle can be s topped during the manoeuvre and,
whils t remaining s tationary, reverse gear can temporarily
be relea sed (for example, to allow a pedes trian to go by in
the area of the manoeuvre).
The speed should be less than about 7 km/h during the
manoeuvr
e, otherwis e the parking manoeuvre will be in-
terrupted.

If the driver carries out a voluntary or involuntary action
on the s teering during the parking manoeuvre (touching it
or preventing it s movement), the manoeuvre will be in-
terrupted.
If the road s urface is very uneven or there are obs tacles un-
der the wheel s affecting the movement of the vehicle, pre-
venting it from continuing along the correct trajector y, the
manoeuvre ma y be interrupted.
End of manoeuvre
If the s ize of parking s pace permits, the parking manoeu-
vre may be performed in one go; when revers e gear is re-
leas ed the wheels will be realigned and the manoeuvre will
be cons idered completed; the system will consequently be
deactivated. If the size of the parking space is s maller, park-
ing may require s everal manoeuvres : the driver will be ad-
vis ed to complete the parking manoeuvre manuall y through
a dedicated message on the ins trument panel display . General warning
s
❍ The ultimate res ponsibility when parking, however
, al-
ways re sts with the driver. During the se manoeuvres ,
always make s ure that no people, animals or objects are
within the manoeuvring area. The Magic Parking sys-
tem (like parking s ensors) is des igned to assi st driver s:
in all ca se s, you mu st always pa y the utmo st attention
during potentially dangerous manoeuvre s, even when
thes e are carried out a low s peed:
❍ If the s ensors undergo s hocks influencing their po sition,
the system operation could be s trongly degraded.
❍ If the s ensors are dirty , covered by s now
, ice or mud or
are repainted compared to the original condition s, the
system operation could be s trongly degraded.
❍ It is extremely important, for the correct operation of
the system, that the s ensors are always kept clean. Dur-
ing cleaning, make s ure not to scratch or damage them;
avoid us ing dry or rough cloths . The sensors mus t be
was hed us ing clean water, with the addition of car
s hampoo if necessary . When using special was hing
equipment such as high pressure jets or steam clean-
ing, clean the sens ors very quickly keeping the jet more
than 10 cm away .
If you wish to stop the steering wheel with
your hands during a manoeuvre, it is advis-
able to handle it firmly on the outer rim. Do
not try and keep your hands on the inside or hold
the spokes.

❍Ultras ound source (e.g. pneumatic brakes of trucks or
air drill s) nearby could negatively influence the sens or
performance.
❍ Sens ors may detect a non-exi stent obs tacle (echo in-
terference) due to mechanical interference, for exam-
ple while wa shing the car, rain, s trong wind, hail.
❍ The sens ors might not detect objects of a particular
s hape or made from particular material s (very thin
poles , trailer beams , panels, nets, bushes, parking de-
terrents , rubbish bins, motor vehicles , etc.). Always take
great care, checking that the car and it s path are ef-
fectively compatible with the parking area identified by
the system.
❍ The us e of (one or more) ty res or rims of a different s ize
to thos e pr
es ent when the vehicle wa s purchas ed could
affect the operation of the system.
❍ If the batter y i s dis connected or very run down, before
the Magic Parking system is available it is necessary
to drive a few hundred metre s, not in a straight line,
to initiali se the system.
❍ If a trailer is fitted (with the plug correctly inserted) the
Magic Parking system will automaticall y be dis abled.
❍ If the Magic Parking system is in “search in progress”
mode, the system could incorrectl y identify a parking
s pace and carry out the manoeuvre (e.g. by a junction,
carriage track, roads crossing the direction of travel,
etc.) ❍
In the ca se of parking manoeuvres on roads on a gra-
dient, the performance of the system could be inferior
and it may deactivate.
❍ If a parking manoeuvr
e is being carried out between
two vehicles parked on the pavement, the Magic Park-
ing system may cause the vehicle to mount the pave-
ment.
❍ Some manoeuvres at very tight bend s may not be car-
ried out.
❍ Take great care to ens ure that conditions do not change
during the parking manoeuvre (e.g. if there are pers ons
and/or animals in the parking area, moving vehicle s,
etc.) and intervene immediatel y if necessary .
❍ During parking manoeuvres , pay s pecial attention to
vehicles approaching from the oppo site direction. Al-
ways follow the Highway Code.
