The connecti ng rods are manufactured from forged s teel wi th an 'I' beam shaft cons truct ion t o provi de high s t rength anddurabil it y. The connect ing rod s mall -end i s narrowed on each s i de to form a tapered head. The taper improves t hedis t ribut ion of force between t he pis t on and connect ing rod duri ng t he combus t ion s troke. A bronze bush is i nst all ed in t hes mall -end, and formed wit h an internal groove t o al low t he flow of l ubricati ng oil around t he bush.
The connecti ng rod bi g-end i s cut and machined at t he joi nt to form a bearing housi ng and bearing cap t hat is s ecured by 2bolt s. The cyli nder pos it ion i s s tamped on adjoi ning s ides of t he joi nt to i dent ify mat chi ng connecti ng rods and beari ngcaps . A hal f shell beari ng is ins tall ed in each half of t he connecti ng rod bi g-end. The connect ing rod beari ng hous ings ands hel l bearings are manufact ured wit h a l ug that correct ly al igns t he bearing i n t he hous i ng, and prevents radial movementof the bearing s hells . Duri ng ins t al lat ion t he lugs mus t face toward the LH s ide (oil fi lt er si de) of t he engine.

The pis t ons are manufactured from al uminum alloy and are i ns t alled wit h 2 compres s ion rings , and an oil cont rol ring wi tha s piral spring. A s teel ins ert i s i ns t alled in t he pis t on upper ring groove t o provi de reinforcement. The pis t on crown i s at oroidal des i gn that forms a pronounced bowl in t he center of the pi s ton head. Recesses are als o formed in t he pis t oncrown t o provi de cl earance for t he 4 valve heads. This des ign of combus ti on chamber promot es high l evel s of swirl andt urbulence required for complete combus t ion of t he air/fuel mi xture, and al so improves t he engine emi ss i ons .
The 3 pi st on rings mus t be ins t al led wi th the ring gaps s paced at 120° (wit h permis sible tolerance of 15° t o 20°) to eachother, around the pi st on. The ful l ski rt pis t on is coated wit h a graphi te bas ed s ubst ance to reduce fri cti on wit h t he cyl inder bore. Oil Pump

An oil s eal i nst all ed at the front of t he cyl inderhead provides s eal ing of t he exhaus t camshaft hous ing. The open port s at the rear of the cyli nder head are sealed wit ht he vacuum pump and hi gh-pres s ure fuel pump s eal ing rings .

The body of the hydrauli c las h adjus t er contai ns a plunger, and 2 chambers for oil feed and press uri zed oil. Thepres s urized oi l i s s uppl ied t o t he las h adjus t er vi a t he cyl inder head oi l gal lery, and t hrough a hole in t he s ide of t he las hadjus ter body. The oi l pas s es int o a feed chamber wi thin the l ash adjus ter, and t hen t hrough to a s eparate press urechamber via a one-way ball valve.
Oil flow from t he pres s ure chamber is det ermi ned by the clearance bet ween the l ash adjust er outer body and the centerplunger. Oi l es capes up the s i de of the pl unger each ti me t he las h adjus t er i s operated. The downward press ure on t heplunger forces a corres ponding amount of oil i n the las h adjus ter body to be dis placed.
As t he camshaft lobe rot ates furt her, downward press ure on the cams haft and finger rocker i s removed. The las h adjus t erplunger is forced up by t he oil pres s ure contai ned in t he pres s ure chamber. The press ure i s not s uffi cient to affect valveoperati on, but i s s uffi cient to el iminate the clearance between the finger rocker and t op of the val ve st em.

Thermal Control Module
The lubricat ion sys tem is a wet s ump, pres sure fed type. The oil lubri cat es t he engine s lidi ng s urfaces , di s si pat es heat,absorbs fuel combus t ion resi due and seal s off t he gap between t he cyl inder and pis ton.
The engi ne is lubri cat ed by a force-fed oil circul at ion sys tem compri si ng a full-fl ow oi l fil ter and cooler ass embly. The oilfi lt er and cooler form an int egral ass embly mount ed on t he LH s i de of the cyli nder block, in clos e proxi mit y t o t he oilpump. Engi ne oil is cooled by the engine cooli ng s ys t em, and eliminates t he requi rement for an addit ional remot elymounted engine oi l cooler.
Oil i s drawn out of t he oil pan and pres s uri zed by the cranks haft dri ven oi l pump. The out put from t he oil pump i s fi lt eredand cool ed before bei ng dis t ribut ed to the cyli nder bl ock mai n oil gall ery. Dri ll ings and galleries connect ed to the mai n oilgallery deli ver pres s uri zed oi l to the cyli nder block and cyl inder head reciprocal component bearings. A dri lli ng above No. 3main bearing cap direct s pres s uri zed oi l to a port at t he rear RH si de of the cyli nder block. The port provides pres s uri zedoil t hrough a banjo connect ion and pi pe to the t urbocharger bearings.
All t he engi ne moving parts are l ubricated by press ure or spl as h oi l. Pres s uri zed oil is al so provided for operat ion of t hehydraulic las h adjus ters and ti ming chain tens ioner.
Oil i s ret urned t o t he oil pan under gravi ty. Large drain holes cas t in the cyli nder head and cyl inder bl ock al low a quickret urn of t he oil .
The lubricat ion sys tem is replenis hed t hrough the oi l fi ll er cap, locat ed on t he engine acous t ic cover. An oil l evel gage islocated on the LH si de of the oi l pan. Two marks at t he end of the gage i ndi cat e t he mini mum and maxi mum oi l levels .The difference between the minimum and maximum marks is approximat ely 1.5 l it ers (1.58 US quarts ) of oil .
