Audi active lane assist
(lane departure assist)
Description
Applies to: vehicles with Audi active lane assist
Active lane ass ist detects lane marker lines with­
in the limits of the system us ing a came ra in t he
w indsh ie ld. If you are app roaching a de tected
l ane marker line and it appea rs likely t hat you
will leave the lane, the system wi ll warn you with
corrective steering. Yo u can override t his steering
at any time . If you pass over a line, the steer ing
wheel will v ibrate lightly. In order for this warn­
i n g vibration to occur, it must f irst be sw itched
on in the Infotainment system . Active lane assist
i s ready for operation whe n the lane marke r line
i s detected on at least one s ide of the vehicle .
The system is designed for driv ing on express­
ways and highways and therefore only activates
at speeds above approximate ly 40 mph (65 km/
h).
Applies to vehicles with side assist
If you activate a tur n signa l when active lane as­
sist is ready and it class ifies a la ne cha nge as cr it­
i cal because of ve hicles t raveli ng a longs ide you o r
approaching you, the re w ill be not iceab le correc­
tive stee rin g short ly before you leave t he lane.
This will attempt to keep yo ur vehicle in t he lane.
A ss istance systems
Applies to vehicles w it h out side assist
T he system wi ll not warn yo u before c ross ing a
l ane marker line if you have activated the t urn
s ignal. In this case, it assumes that you are
changing lanes intentionally.
Appl ies to: vehicles with adaptive c ruise control
The co rrective steer ing is targeted based o n the
dr iv ing s itu ation . In add it ion to the lane mar ker
li nes, the system can al so t ake into accoun t other
objects s uch as gua rd rai ls. If they a re detected in
close proximity to t he vehicle, active lane assist
helps p reve nt the vehicle from driving too close
to them. The re is a lso pass ing ass istance. The
system does not provide any corrective steering if it detects that you are pass ing anot her vehicle .
A WARNING
-
-The system warns the drive r that the vehicle
is leaving the lane using corrective steering.
T he drive r is always responsible fo r keeping
the vehicle within the lane.
- T he system can assist the dr iver in keeping
the vehicle in the l ane, but it does not dr ive
by i tsel f. Always keep your hands on the
s teer ing whee l.
- Cor rec tive stee ring may not occur in cert ain
situa tions, such as during he avy b raking .
- T here may be cases whe re t he came ra does
not recogni ze all lane mar ker lines . Cor re c­
tive steering can only take pla ce on the s ide
of the vehicle where lane marker lines are
detected.
- Other road structu res or objects could poss i­
b ly be identified un intentionally as lane
marker lines. As a result, co rrective steering
may be unexpected or may not occ ur.
- The camera view can be rest ricted, for ex­
ample by vehicles driving ahead or by ra in,
snow, heavy spray or light shining into the
camera. Th is can result in active lane ass ist
not detecting the lane marker lines o r de­
tect ing them inco rrectly .
- Unde r ce rtain condit ions such as r uts in the
road, a ban ked roadway or crosswinds, the
correct ive steer ing alone may not be enough
to keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane.

-For safety reasons, active lane assist must
not be used when there are poor road and/
or weather cond itions such as slippery
roads, fog, gravel, heavy rain, snow and the
potent ial for hydroplaning. Using act ive lane
assist under these conditions may increase
the risk of a crash .
Switching on/off

Indicator light s
• Read y: the indicator light turns on when the
system is ready for use. The system can now be
operated .
• Not ready: the indicator light turns on if the
system is switched on but is inoperab le. Th is m ay
be due to the following reasons:
-There is no lane marker line.
- The re levant lane marker lines are not detected
(fo r example , mark ings in a construction zone

or because they are obstru cted by snow, dirt,
water or lighting).
- T he vehicle speed is below the activation speed
of approximate ly 40 mph (65 km/h).
- The lane is too narrow or too wide.
- The curve is too narrow.
- The d river's hands are not on the steering
wheel.

Side assist he lps you monitor your blind spot and
traffic behind your vehicle. Within the limits of
the system, it warns you about vehicles that are
coming closer or that are traveling with you with­
in sensor
range ©¢ fig. 118: if a lane change is
classified as critical, the display @ in the exter ior
m irror ¢ fig. 119 turns on .
The display in the left exter ior mirror provides as­
sistance when making a lane change to the left,
while the display in the right exterior mirror pro ­
vides assistance whe n mak ing a la ne cha nge to
the right .
Information stage
As long as you do not activate the turn signal,
side assist informs you about vehicles that are
detected and class ified as crit ical. The display in
the mirror turns on, but is dim.
The display remains dim in the information stage so that your view toward the front is not distur­bed .
Warning stage
If the disp lay in a mirror blinks brightly when you
activate a turn signal, side assist is warning you
about detected vehicles that it has classified as
cr itical. If this happens, check traffic by glanc ing
i n the exter ior mirrors and over your shoulder
¢ .& in General information on page 107 .
Applies to veh icles with active lane assist
The display in the m irror can also blink if you
have not activated a turn signal : if you are ap ­
p roaching a detected lane marker line and it ap­
pears you w ill be leaving the lane, side assist will
warn you abo ut detected vehicles that it has clas­
sified as critical.

critical for a lane change even if i t is st ill some­
what far away. The faster a vehicle approaches,

© Vehicles you are passing
If you slowly pass a veh icle that side assist has
detected (the d ifference in speed be twee n the
ve hicle and your ve hicle is less than 9 mph (15
km/h)), the disp lay in the exterior mirror turns
on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot .
The display will not tu rn on if you quic kly pass a
ve hicl e that side assist has detected (the diffe r­
ence in speed is greater t han 9 mp h (1 5 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The rada r senso rs a re desig ned to detect the left
a n d right adjacent lanes when the road lanes a re
the normal wid th . In some s ituat ions, the d isplay
i n the exterior mir ror may turn on even tho ugh
there is no vehicle located in the area that is criti ­
cal for a lane change. For example:
- If the lanes a re n arrow o r if yo u are driv ing on
the edge of your lane . If this is the case, the
system may have detected a vehicle in another
l ane that is no t adjacent to your c urrent lane .
- If you are dr iving through a cu rve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over
from the adjacent lane .
-If side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or displaced guard rails) .
- In poor weat her condit ions . The side assis t
functions are limited.

A WARNING
- Always pay atte ntion to traffic and to the
area around yo ur vehicle. Side assist cannot
replace a dr iver's attention . The dr iver alone
is a lways responsible for lane changes and
s imi lar d riving maneuvers .
- In some situat ions, the system may not
func tion or its funct io n may be lim ited . For
example:
-
A ss istance systems
- if vehicles are approach ing or being left
behind very q uick ly. The disp lay may not
turn o n in time.
- In poor weat her condit ions such as heavy
r ain, snow or heavy m ist .
- On very w ide lanes, in tight curves, or if
the re is a rise i n the road surface. Veh icles
i n the ad jacent lane may not be detected
because they are outside of the sensor
range.
- Aud i side assist cannot detect all vehicles
under all conditions, which can increase the
r isk of acc idents .
- Please note that s ide ass ist only d isp lays ap­
proaching vehicles or vehicles in yo ur blind
spo t if your ve hicle is traveling a t least
19 mph (30 km/h).
- In ce rtain s ituations, the system may not
wo rk or its f unct io n may be lim ited . For ex­
a m ple:
- The display may not turn on at the r ight
time if vehicles are approach ing or pass ing
very quickly.
- In poor weat he r con dit ions, such as heavy
rain, snow or fog .
- In very wide lanes, in tig ht c urves or whe n
there are slopes in the roadway, vehicles
i n the ne ighbor ing lanes may not be de­
tected because they are o utside of the
senso r range.
@ Note
The sensors can be d isp laced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and u nderbody. This ca n impair the system. Have
an a uth or ized Audi dea ler or author ized Audi
Service Fac il ity check the ir fu nct io n.

fro nt passenger's door has bee n tinted, the

Switching on/off

Setting the display brightness

The display brightness can be adjusted in the In ­
fotainment system .
• Select : the ICARI function button > Car systems
control button > Driver assistance > Audi side
assist .
The display brightness adjusts automatically to
the br ightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage . In very
dark or very br ight surroundings, the automat ic
adj ustment will set the disp lay to the minim um
or maximum level. In such cases , you may notic e
no change when adjust ing the brightness, or the
change may only be noticeable once the sur­
ro undings change .
Adj ust the brightness to a level where the disp lay
i n the information stage will no t disrupt your
view ahead.
If you change the brightness, the dis­
p lay in the exter ior mirror wi ll briefly show the
brightness lev el in the information stage . T he
brightness of the warning stage is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust­
ed along with the information stage.

If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in the
button turns off and a message will appear in the
i nstrument cluster display:
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable. No
sensor vision
The radar sensor vision is impaired . Do not cover
the area in front of the sensors with bike wheels,
stickers, dirt or ot her objects . Clean the area in
front of the sensors, if
necessary ¢ page 106,

Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on at this time be­
cause there is a malfunction (for example, the
battery charge level may be too low).
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will detect
vehicles correctly and it has switched off. The
sensors have been moved or are faulty . Have the
system checked by an authorized Audi dealer or
autho rized Aud i Serv ice Facility soon.
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist switches off automatically when a fac­
tory- installed trailer hitch is connected to the
electrical connector on the trailer. There is no
guarantee the system will switch off when using
a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use side ass ist
when towing a trailer.

Description

The night vision assist con detect, highlight and,
if necessary, worn about pedestrians and large
wild animals .
Night vision assist with pedestrian and wild ani­
mal detection ass ists you at night by us ing an in ­
frared camera to monitor the area in front of
your veh icle, w ith in the limits of the system. It
can display objects up to a distance of approxi­
mately 1000 feet (300 m). The thermal image
detected by the camera is shown in the instru­ ment cluster display. Warm a reas appear l ighter
and cold areas appear dar ke r.

The area classified as critical is based on the vehi­
cle speed and the steering wheel angle. Pedes­
trian and wild animal warning encourages you to pay more attention.
If the night vision assist image is replaced by an­
other display (such as the on-board computer),
the
red . or. indicator light c::> fig. 126 will
appear if there is a pedestrian or wild animal
warning.
If the head-up display* is switched on and the
night vision assist content is activated, .
or.
will appear in the head-up display*.
Marking light*
To direct the driver's attention to a pedestrian,
the headlights can flash on the pedestrian three
times in a row when there is a pedestrian warn­
ing.
This occurs at speeds above approximately 35 mph (60 km/h) if you are outside of illuminat­
ed areas and no detected vehicles are shown . The
high beam assistant* controls the marking light*
c::> page 44, High beam assistant .
The marking light is not used for wild animals .
General information

The following situations may affect the function
of the night vision assist system:
- Poor visibility such as snow , rain, fog or heavy
spray
- Dirty lens on the night vision assist camera
Make sure the night vision assist camera
c::> fig . 12 7 is not covered by stickers , deposits or
any other obstructions because that can affect
the camera function . For information on clean­
ing, see
c::> page 306.
The pedestrian and wild animal recognition de­
pends on the temperature difference between
the person/wild animal and the background. Peo­
ple/wild animals may not be detected if the dif­
ference is too small. The pedestrian/wild animal
marking and the marking light* deactivate at
temperatures above approximately 77 °F (25 °C)
and during daylight . If the night vision assist im ­
age is selected in the inst rument cluster display,
then the
II symbol appears a t the top on the
right side .

Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when night vision assist is switch­
ed on. The driver is always responsible for as­
sessing the traffic situation.
- Night vision assist can only warn about peo­
ple and wild animals located within the visu­
al range of the infrared camera. The visual
range corresponds to the image in the in­
strument cluster display .
- Night vision assist may not detect people or
wild animals and mark them if
- they are not in an upright position, for ex­
ample if they are sitting or lying down
and/or
- the silhouette in the display appears in­
complete or interrupted, for example be­
cause the person is partially covered by a
vehicle or an animal by tall grass . This
could increase the risk of an accident.
- Never try to swerve around animals if doing
so will endanger you or other road users, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.
