7-2Appearance and care
In order to maintain the appearance of your \fehicle, it is
important to ta\be proper care of it.
Whene\fer possible, par\b your \fehicle inside a garage
or in a co\fered area to minimize the chances of
damaging the paint surface of your \fehicle.
When it is necessary to par\b outside, par\b in a shady
area or protect the \fehicle with a body co\fer.Be
careful not to scratch the paint surface when
putting on or removing the body cover.
WASHING
In the following instances, wash your \fehicle as soon
as possible to protect the paint surface:
. After a rainfall, which may cause the paint surface
damage from acid rain.
. After dri\fing on coastal roads, which may cause
rusting from the sea breeze.
. When contaminants such as soot, bird droppings,
tree sap, metal particles or bugs get on the paint
surface.
. When dust or mud builds up on the paint surface.
1. Wash the \fehicle surface with a wet sponge and plenty of water.
2. Clean the \fehicle surface gently and thoroughly using a mild soap, a special \fehicle soap or a
general purpose dishwashing liquid mixed with
clean, lu\bewarm (ne\fer hot) water.
CAUTION:
.Do not wash the vehicle with strong house-
hold soap, strong chemical detergents, ga-
soline or solvents.
. Do not wash the vehicle in direct sunlight or
while the vehicle body is hot, as the paint
surface may become water-spotted. .
Avoid using tight-napped or rough cloths,
such as washing mitts. Care must be taken
when removing caked-on dirt or other for-
eign substances so the paint surface is not
scratched or damaged.
3. Rinse the \fehicle thoroughly with plenty of clean water.
4. Use a dampened chamois to dry the paint surface and a\foid lea\fing water spots.
When washing the \fehicle, ta\be care of the following:
. Inside flanges, joints and folds on the doors,
hatches and hood are particularly \fulnerable to the
effects of road salt. Therefore, these areas must
be cleaned regularly.
. Be sure that the drain holes in the lower edge of
the doors are not clogged.
. Spray water to the underbody and in the wheel
wells to loosen the dirt and/or wash away road
salt.
REMOVING SPOTS
Remo\fe tar and oil spots, industrial dust, insects, and
tree sap as quic\bly as possible from the paint surface
to a\foid lasting damage or staining. Special cleaning
products are a\failable at a RENAULT dealer or any
automoti\fe accessory store.
WAXING
Regular waxing protects the paint surface and helps
maintain a new \fehicle appearance.
After waxing, polishing is recommended to remo\fe
built-up residue and to a\foid a weathered appearance.
A RENAULT dealer can assist you in choosing the
appropriate waxing products.
CAUTION:
.Wash your vehicle thoroughly and comple-
tely before applying wax to the paint surface.
. Always follow the manufacturer’s instruc-
tions supplied with the wax.
. Do not use a wax containing any abrasives,
cutting compounds or cleaners that may
damage the vehicle finish.
Machine compounding or aggressi\fe polishing on a
base coat/clear coat paint finish may dull the finish or
lea\fe swirl mar\bs.
GLASS
Use glass cleaner to remo\fe smo\be and dust film from
the glass surfaces. It is normal for glass to become
coated with a film after the \fehicle is par\bed in the hot
sun. Glass cleaner and a soft cloth will easily remo\fe
this film.

UNDERBODY
In areas where road sal\f is used in \fhe win\fer, i\f is
ne\bessary \fo \blean \fhe vehi\ble’s underbody regularly in
order \fo preven\f dir\f and sal\f from building up and
\bausing \fhe a\b\belera\fion of \borrosion on \fhe under-
body and suspension.
Before \fhe win\fer and again in \fhe spring, \fhe under-
seal mus\f be \bhe\bked and, if ne\bessary, re-\frea\fed.
WHEELS
.Wash \fhe wheels when washing \fhe vehi\ble \fo
main\fain \fheir appearan\be.
. Clean \fhe inner side of \fhe wheels when \fhe wheel
is \bhanged or \fhe underside of \fhe vehi\ble is
washed.
. Do no\f use abrasive \bleaners when washing \fhe
wheels.
. Inspe\b\f wheel rims regularly for den\fs or \borrosion.
This may \bause loss of pressure or damage \fhe
\fire bead.
. RENAULT re\bommends \fha\f \fhe road wheels be
waxed \fo pro\fe\b\f agains\f road sal\f in areas where
i\f is used during win\fer.
ALUMINUM ALLOY WHEELS
Wash \fhe wheels regularly wi\fh a sponge dampened in
a mild solu\fion, espe\bially during win\fer in areas where
road sal\f is used.
The sal\f residue from road sal\f \bould dis\bolor \fhe
wheels if i\f is no\f washed off regularly.
CAUTION:
Follow the directions below to avoid staining or
discoloring the wheels: .
Do not use a cleaner that uses strong acid or
alkali contents to clean the wheels.
. Do not apply wheel cleaners to the wheels
when they are hot. The wheel temperature
should be the same as ambient temperature.
. Rinse the wheel to completely remove the
cleaner within 15 minutes after the cleaner is
applied.
CHROME PARTS
Clean all \bhrome par\fs regularly wi\fh a nonabrasive
\bhrome polish \fo main\fain \fhe finish. O\b\basionally remove loose dus\f from \fhe in\ferior \frim,
plas\fi\b par\fs and sea\fs using a va\buum \bleaner or sof\f
bris\fled brush. Wipe \fhe vinyl and lea\fher surfa\bes wi\fh
a \blean, sof\f \blo\fh dampened in mild soap solu\fion,
\fhen wipe \blean wi\fh a dry, sof\f \blo\fh.
Regular \bare and \bleaning is required in order \fo
main\fain \fhe appearan\be of \fhe lea\fher.
Before using any fabri\b pro\fe\b\for, read \fhe manufa\b-
\furer’s re\bommenda\fions. Some fabri\b pro\fe\b\fors
\bon\fain \bhemi\bals \fha\f may s\fain or blea\bh \fhe sea\f
ma\ferial.
Use a sof\f \blo\fh dampened only wi\fh wa\fer \fo \blean \fhe
me\fer and gauge lens \bovers.
CAUTION:
.
Never use benzine, thinner or any similar
material.
. Small dirt particles can be abrasive and
damaging to leather surfaces and should be
removed promptly. Do not use saddle soap,
car waxes, polishes, oils, cleaning fluids,
solvents, detergents or ammonia-based
cleaners as they may damage the leather
natural finish.
. Never use fabric protectors unless recom-
mended by the manufacturer.
. Do not use glass or plastic cleaner on meter
or gauge lens covers. It may damage the
lens covers.

SEAT BELTS
WARNING:

Do not allow wet seat belts to roll up in the
retractor.
. Never use bleach, dye or chemical solvents
to clean the seat belts, since these materials
may severely weaken the seat belt webbing.

Air pollution

CORROSION

cleaner or broom.

the vehicle as this may damage them.

Your new vehicle has been desi\fned to have minimum
maintenance requirements with lon\f service intervals
to save \bou both time and mone\b. However, some da\b-
to-da\b and re\fular maintenance is essential to maintain
\bour vehicle’s fine mechanical condition, as well as its
emission and en\fine performance.
It is the owner’s responsibilit\b to make sure that the
specified maintenance, as well as \feneral mainte-
nance, is performed.
As the vehicle owner, \bou are the onl\b one who can
ensure that \bour vehicle receives the proper main-
tenance care. You are a vital link in the maintenance
chain.
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
For \bour convenience, the required scheduled main-
tenance items are described and listed in a separate
maintenance booklet. You must refer to that booklet to
ensure that necessar\b maintenance is performed on
\bour vehicle at re\fular intervals.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
General maintenance includes those items which
should be checked durin\f normal da\b-to-da\b operation
of the vehicle. The\b are essential if \bour vehicle is to
continue to operate properl\b. It is \bour responsibilit\b to
perform these procedures re\fularl\b as prescribed.
Performin\f \feneral maintenance checks requires
minimal mechanical skill and onl\b a few \feneral
automotive tools.
These checks and inspections can be done b\b
\bourself, a qualified technician, or if \bou prefer, a
RENAULT dealer.
WHERE TO GO FOR SERVICE
If maintenance service is required or \bour vehicle
appears to malfunction, have the s\bstems checked and
tuned b\b a RENAULT dealer.
RENAULT technicians are well-trained specialists and
are kept up-to-date with the latest service information
throu\fh technical bulletins, service tips, and internal
dealership trainin\f pro\frams. The\b are completel\b
qualified to work on RENAULT’s vehiclesbeforethe\b
work on \bour vehicle, rather than after the\b have
worked on it.
You can be confident that a RENAULT dealer’s service
department performs the best job to meet the
maintenance requirements on \bour vehicle — in a
reliable and economic wa\b. Durin\f normal da\b-to-da\b operation of the vehicle,
\feneral maintenance should be performed re\fularl\b as
prescribed in this section. If \bou detect an\b unusual
sounds, vibrations or smells, be sure to check for the
cause or have a RENAULT dealer do it promptl\b. In
addition, \bou should notif\b a RENAULT dealer if \bou
think that repairs are required.

Outside vehicle
The maintenance items listed here should be per-
formed from time to time, unless otherwise specified.
Doors and engine hood:
Check that all doors and the en\fine hood operate
properl\b. Also make sure that all latches lock securel\b.
Lubricate hin\fes and latches if necessar\b. Make sure
that the secondar\b latch of the en\fine hood keeps the
hood from openin\f when the primar\b latch is released.
When drivin\f in areas usin\f road salt or other
corrosive materials, check lubrication frequentl\b.
Lights*:
Clean the headli\fhts on a re\fular basis. Make sure that
the headli\fhts, stop li\fhts, tail li\fhts, turn si\fnal li\fhts,
and other li\fhts are all operatin\f properl\b and installed
securel\b. Also check the aim of the headli\fhts.
