Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are a
few things you should do.
When you park your vehicle , do the following
- Stop the vehicle using the brake peda l.
- Pull the switch to app ly th e electromechanical park ing
brake .
- Move t he selector lever into the
P positio n ~ &-
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignitio n key f rom
the ignition loc k.
When you park your vehicle on hills , do the
following
- Stop the vehicle using the brake peda l.
- Pull the switch to app ly th e electromechanical par king
brake.
- If you are parkin g headed
downhill , turn t he fro nt whee ls
toward the curb.
- If you are parking headed
uphill , turn t he front w heels
awayfrom the curb.
- Move the se lector lever into the
P position.
- Sw itch off the engine and rem ove the ignitio n key f rom
the ign ition lock.

g ear. The vehicle could start to roll away and cau se an a ccident.

• Please exe rcise care when you park your vehicle in pa rking areas
with parking barriers or curbs . Parking barriers and curbs vary in
height and cou ld damage your bumper and re lated components as
the front of your vehicle moves over a barrier or curb that is too high, as you park or as you back out of a parking spot . In order to be
sure that no such damage can occur , you may w ish to stop short of
having the front tires of your car touch the parking barrier or curb.
• Please also exercise exceptional care when you drive up or down
steep ramps or drive over curbs or other obstacles, for which the
vehicle is not designed, because components of the vehicle close to
the ground, such as bumper covers, spoilers and suspension and exhaust system components, may become damaged. •

Starting off with a trailer
T o prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the following:
- Keep the switch pulled and depress the accelerator. The
parking brake stays applied and preve nts the vehicle
f rom rolling backward .
- You can release the switch o nce you are sure t hat you are
deve lop ing enough forward momentum at the whee ls as
you depress the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
severity of the incline, you may roll backwards as you start. You can
prevent rol ling backwards by holding the parki ng brake sw itch
pul led out and acce lerating -just as you would when starting on a
h ill with a conventional hand brake. •
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventi on al b rake system fails or
locks.
- Pull th e swi tch and continu e to pull it to slow you r veh icle
with t he par king brake in an emergency .
- As soon as you r elease the switch or acc elerate, the
braking pro cess s tops .
If you pull the swi tch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h), the emergency braking function is initiated . T he vehicle is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hydraulic brake system .
Brake performance is similar to making an emergency stop~&.
So that emergency braking is not activated by mistake, an audib le
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled . As soon as the switch is released, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, emer­
gency b raking stops .
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be u sed in an emergen cy, when
the normal foot br ake has f ailed or the br ake ped al i s obstructed .
U sing the parking brake to perform emergen cy brakin g will slow
yo ur vehicle a s if yo u had made a full brake app lication . The law s
of phy sic s cannot be su spe nded even with E SP and it s asso ciated
c ompon ents ( AB S, ASR, EDS ). In corner s and whe n ro ad or
w eather conditions are bad , a full brak e application can cau se the
vehi cle to skid or the r ear end to break a way -ri sking an
ac cident .•
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
T his message appears when the parking brake is applied on an
incline that exceeds about 30%.
I n this case the b raking power of the park ing brake may
not be
adequ ate
to prevent the vehicle from rol ling unintentionally.
Plea se relea se parking br ake
This message appears, when a gear is selected and the acce lerator
pedal is depressed -release the parking brake.
Pre ss brake peda l to release parking brake
T his driver message appears when the switch to release the parking
brake was pressed. The parking brake can only be released if you
press the brake or accelerator peda l and press the switch at the
same time .
Parking brake malfun ction !
This d river message appears together with the yellow
when there is a parking brake malfunction. symbol

If the warning/indicator light (U.S. models : BRAKE, Canadian models:
CCD) ) flashes in the instrument cluster, there is a brake system
malfunction. By pressing the
I CHECK] button, you can bring up a
driver m essage which explains the malfunction in more detail. If the
message
P arking br ake ! Plea se contact work shop appears, there is
a parking brake malfunction which you should have repaired imme ­
diate ly by an au thorized dealership ~

Cruise control
Switching the system on
The cruise control system makes it possible to drive at a
constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h).

The display ~ fig. 150 will show the set speed. The display may vary
depe nding on the type of display in your vehic le. The indicator light
CRUISE (US model)/ 0" (Canadian model) will a lso light up in the
instrument cluster.
The speed is kept constant via an engine output adjustment or active brake intervention .

• Please note that inadvertently "resting" your foot on the accel­
erator pedal causes the cruise control not to brake . This is because
the cruise control is overridden by the driver's acceleration.

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes decelerate
automatically. •
Changing speed
-Press lever in the 0 or O direction => page 137, fig. 149
to increase or decrease your speed.
- Release the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing
the lever . If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your
speed in 5 mph (10 km/h) increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your
speed, e.g . if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved
earlier will resume as soon as you release the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will turn off temporarily.
The green symbol in the display=>
page 137, fig. 150 is rep laced
with a white symbol. The saved speed remains the same. •
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehicle is not
moving.
- Turn on the ignition. -
Pull lever into position
G) => page 137, fig. 149.
- Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Release the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before driving on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward
(D. •
Switching the system off
Temporary deactivation
- Press the brake pedal, or
- Press the lever into position
0 (not clicked into place)
=> page 137 , fig. 149, or
- Drive for longer than 5 minutes at more than 5 mph
(10 km/h) above the stored speed.
Switching off completely
-Press lever into position 0 (clicked into place), or
- Switch the ignition off.
The system retains the saved speed if you deactivate the cruise
control temporarily . To resume the saved speed, release the brake
pedal and pull the lever to position
(D .
Switching the ignition off erases the saved speed.
& WARNING
You should only return to the saved speed if it is not too fast for
the current traffic conditions -risk of an accident! •

Adaptive Cruise Control
Speed and distance control system

Description
The Adaptive Cruise Control driver assistance program is
a combined speed and distance control system.

Adaptive Cruise Control can help make driving more relaxed and
less tiring, particularly during long trips on interstates or other
highways that are generally straight .
Set ACC to maintain a constant, legal travel speed between 20 and
95 mph (30 -150 km/h) that is appropriate for prevailing traffic
conditions. Select a following distance to the vehicle ahead and ACC
will adjust your speed to maintain that distance .
Adaptive Cruise Contro l has technical limitations that you must
know, so please read this section carefully, understand how the
system works and use it proper ly at all times .
How does it work?
You can operate the Adaptive Cruise Control using the lever on the
steering wheel column =>
page 142, "How is the speed stored?" and

page 144, "How is the distance set?" .

Important information is brought up in the speedometer and in the
instrument cluster display as the vehicle is being driven

What is important for you to know
There are limits to what Adaptive Cruise Control can do as the
vehicle is being driven =>
page 150, "System limitations" .
& WARNING
Improper use of the Adaptive Cruise Control can cause collisions,
other accidents and serious personal injury.
• Always remember that the Adaptive Cruise Control has limits -
it will not slow the vehicle down or maintain the set distance
when you drive towards an obstacle or something on or near the
road that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped in a traffic jam,
a stalled or disabled vehicle.
• Always remember that the Adaptive Cruise Control cannot
detect a vehicle that is driving towards you in your traffic lane and
that it cannot detect narrow vehicles such as motorcycles and
bicycles .
• Never drive at speeds that are too fast for traffic, road and
weather conditions .
• The Adaptive Cruise Control cannot slow or brake the vehicle
safely when you follow another vehicle too closely. Always
remember that the Adaptive Cruise Control has a braking power
that is only about 30% of the vehicle 's maximum braking ability.
Always be prepared to brake and take evasive action to avoid colli­
sions and other accident situations.
• Never allow the closing speed between you and other vehicles
to be so high that the Adaptive Cruise Control may not be able to _,,,

slow your veh icle safel y. If closing speed is too h igh , you must
apply the brake s your self to reduce the risk of a rear -end cra sh.
• Never rest your foot on the accelerator pedal , especi ally when
the Adapt ive Crui se Control is being u sed . Pressure on the acceler ­
ator will override the ACC brak ing function and prevent the brakes
from being applied when ACC detect s a situation when the brake s
must be applied .
• Never use Ad aptive Cruise Control when you cannot drive
safely at a steady speed , including on city streets , on winding
roads or when road condition s are poor (for example, on i ce ,
gravel , in fog , heavy rain or on wet roads that in crease the risk of
hydroplaning).
• The radar sensor's
vision can be redu ced by rain , snow and
heavy road spray . These and similar conditions can prevent vehi ­
cles up ahe ad from being a ccurately detected and in some cases
they may not be detected at all . Do not use ACC when the radar
sensors cannot ac curately detect vehi cles moving ahead of you in
traffic.
• Always turn off Adaptive Cruise Control when entering turn
lanes, exit lanes and construction zones or in similar situations
be cause the vehicle will automati cally ac celerate to the stored
speed when the road ahead is clear.
• To p revent unintended operation , always switch ACC off when
it is not being used.

• For safety r eas ons, the store d spe ed is d elet ed whe n th e ig nition
is turned off .
• When Ada ptive Cru ise Contr ol is swi tch ed o n, the Electr onic
Stabilization Program (ES P) is also automatically activated .
• Damage caused by accidents an d so me min or collis ions ca n
affect the radar sensor settings and cause the system to malfunc ­
t ion o r sw itch o ff co mplet ely . • I
n winter conditions, you should check the radar sensor cover
b ef or e driving to make s ure it is free of ice and snow . If n ecessary,
clean the area near the radar sensor carefully=:>

• To ensu re tha t the rada r se nsor is not bl ocked, fo reign objec ts
(e .g. stickers, larger license p late mounts, add -on parts) must not
cover the area near the rada r sens or=:>

How does Adaptive Cruise Control work?

th at are n ot moving in yo ur l ane and i n you r direc tio n of travel wi ll
n ot be detected. The sensor measures the distance to reflective
surfaces that must have a certain size. The system responds only
after t he distance measurement has been made. If a measurement
is not possible, the system cannot respond and wi ll not react to a
v e hic le or so met hing else up ahe ad .

Vehicles moving in you r direction can be detected up to a dis tance
of about 140 yards (130 meters) bu t the Adaptive Cruise Control
cannot detect vehicles that are stopped or sta lled, obs tacles that do
not move or narrow vehic les like motorcyc les and bicycles .
Open road
When the road is c lear, Adap tive Cruise Con trol works like cruise
control. It maintains a constant target speed specified by the driver .
Driving in traffic
If a slow er vehicle driving ahead is detected, the Adaptive Cruis e
Contr ol dece lerates (within the limits of the system) ::::,
page 150 to
its spe ed and after adjusting, tries to maintain the set distance from
t he veh ic le ahead. The vehicle may temporar ily d rive slower tha n
the set speed while adjusting ::::,

If the vehicle in front accele rates, Adaptive Cruise Control also accel ­
erates up to the speed that you have set.
Situations requiring driver intervention
I n some situations you w ill have to use the foot brake and slow the
veh icle down in order to keep a sa fe distance from vehicle in front
of you or to avoid a rear -end collision. In this situation, a symbol
appears and a warning tone sounds::::,
page 146.
Passing another vehicle
If you move int o the pa ssing lane and no vehicle is detecte d ahead,
Adaptive Cruise Contro l accelerates to the speed you have set and
maintains it .
Overriding ACC
You can increase your speed a t any time by stepping on the acceler ­
ator pedal. After you re lease the accelerator pedal, the system
adjusts back down to the speed you previously set .

• Never rely on the distan ce control feature of ACC alone to
prevent rear -end collisions. Always be prepared to brake and take
evasive action to avoid colli sio ns and other accident situation s.
• Never allow the closing speed between you and other vehicle s
to be so high that the Adaptive Cruise Control may not be able to
slow your vehicle safely . If clo sing speed i s too high , you must
apply the brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a rear -end cra sh .

Please note that the amount of acceleration the Adaptive Cruise
C o ntro l use s depends on the Distance setting selected . DISTA NCE 1
gives you acceleratio n that is dynamic a nd sporty. D IS TA NCE 4, on

Storing speed
With the system switched on the speed is stored as follows:
- Drive at the speed you want. The speed must be between 20 and 95 mph (30 and 150 km/h).
- Press the SET button to store the desired speed.
After the (SETI button is released, the current speed is stored and
maintained.
The instrument cluster display shows the stored speed with a red
indicator light~
page 146.

For safety reasons, the stored speed is erased when the ignition or
the ACC is turned off.•

- Press the lever upwards
Q and hold it. As long as you
hold the lever up, the light diode display in the speedom­
eter LED display moves forward and the speed is
increased.
Reducing speed
- Press the lever briefly downwards Q. Speed decreases
by 2.5 mph. Canada models: speed will decrease by one
mark on the speedometer scale.
- Press the lever downwards
O and hold it. As long as you
hold the lever down, the light diode display in the speed ­
ometer LED display moves backward and the speed is reduced. ._
