The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is part of
the On Board Diagnostic system (OBD II). The
¢4 symbol turns on when the ign ition is switched
on and turns off again once the e ngine is started
and running at a steady id le speed . This indicates
that the MIL is functioning correctly.
The indicato r light turns on if there is a malfunc
tion in the engine electronics. See an autho rized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility to
have the ma lfunction corrected. For additiona l

T he w arning/i ndic ator lig ht tu rn s o n when the ig
nition is switche d on and tu rns off once the en
gine is starte d and is running in idle at a stab le
speed. This indicates t hat the MIL is f unctioning
correctly.
If the light does not turn off after starting the
engine
or t urns on while driving, this may ind i
cate there is a malfunction in the eng ine. If the
i ndicator tu rns on, the catalytic conve rter may be
damaged .
Drive
with reduced engine performance (avo id
high speeds for extended periods of t ime and/o r
fast acceleration) and have the malfu nction cor
rected . See an author ized Audi dealer or author
ized Audi Service Facility .
The indicator may turn on if the e lectronic speed

signed a code. In case of a ma lfunction, the com
ponent w ill be identif ied and the fau lt stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MI L light may a lso ill uminate if there is a
leak in the on-board f uel vapor recovery system.
If the light ill uminates after a refueling, stop the
veh icle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop
erly closed (on ly vehicles with gasoline engine)

In order to make an accurate d iagnosis, the stor
ed data can on ly be displayed using special diag
nostic equipment (generic scan too l for 0BD) .
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip
ment, p ush the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood

shop can interpret the code and perform the nec
essary repair.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc

Electronic speed limiter
Your veh icle may be facto ry equipped with ti res
that are r ated for a maxim um speed of 130 mph
(210 km/h) . This is less than the maxim um speed
of yo ur vehicle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
fa ilur e and loss of control if the veh icle is operat
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle a lso has an
electronic speed limiter. The electronic speed lim iter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating . For more information

ro ad speed s ignals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL)

consumption is listed in the efficiency program .
The display shows up to three other items of
equ ipment @. The equipment using the most
power is listed first. If more than three items us
ing power are switched on, the equipment that is
currently us ing the most power is displayed.
A gauge @also shows the current total con
sumption of all other consumers.
Fuel economy messages

Fue l economy messages are d isplayed when fue l
consumption is increased by certain conditions. If
you follow these economy tips, you can reduce
your vehicle's fuel consumption. The messages
appear automatically and are only displayed in
the efficiency program . The fuel economy mes
sages turn off automatically after a certai n pe ri
od of time.
• To turn an economy tip off immediately after it
appears, press any button on the windshield
wipe r lever*/multifunction steering wheel*.

-Once you have turned an economy tip off, it
