Exhaust Valve Timing Control Solenoid ValveINFOID:0000000012431286
Exhaust valve timing control solenoi
d valve is activated by ON/OFF
pulse duty (ratio) signals from the ECM.
The exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve changes the oil
amount and direction of flow through exhaust valve timing control
unit or stops oil flow.
The longer pulse width retards valve angle.
The shorter pulse width advances valve angle.
When ON and OFF pulse widths become equal, the solenoid valve
stops oil pressure flow to fix the exhaust valve angle at the control
position.
Fuel InjectorINFOID:0000000012431287
The fuel injector is a small, precise solenoid valve. When the ECM
supplies a ground to the fuel injector circuit, the coil in the fuel injec-
tor is energized. The energized coil pulls the ball valve back and
allows fuel to flow through the fuel injector into the intake manifold.
The amount of fuel injected depends upon the injection pulse dura-
tion. Pulse duration is the length of time the fuel injector remains
open. The ECM controls the injection pulse duration based on
engine fuel needs.
Fuel PumpINFOID:0000000012431288
*: ECM determines the start signal status by the signals of engine speed and battery voltage.
The ECM activates the fuel pump for a few seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON to improve engine
start ability. If the ECM receives a engine speed signal from the crankshaft position sensor (POS) and cam-
shaft position sensor (PHASE), it knows that the engi ne is rotating, and causes the pump to operate. If the
engine speed signal is not received when the ignition s witch is ON, the engine stalls. The ECM stops pump
operation and prevents battery discharging, thereby improving safety. The EC M does not directly drive the fuel
pump. It controls the ON/OFF fuel pump rela y, which in turn controls the fuel pump.

Heated Oxygen Sensor 2
INFOID:0000000012431289
The heated oxygen sensor 2, after three way catalyst (manifold),
monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas.
Even if switching characteristics of the air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1
are shifted, the air-fuel ratio is cont rolled to stoichiometric, by the sig-
nal from the heated oxygen sensor 2.
This sensor is made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates volt-
age from approximately 1 V in richer conditions to 0 V in leaner con-
ditions.
Under normal conditions the heated ox ygen sensor 2 is not used for
engine control operation.
Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 HeaterINFOID:0000000012431290
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The ECM performs ON/OFF control of the heated oxy gen sensor 2 heater corresponding to the engine speed,
amount of intake air and engine coolant temperature.
OPERATION
Ignition Coil With Power TransistorINFOID:0000000012431291
The ignition signal from the ECM is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns
ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/O FF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil
secondary circuit.
Intake Air Temperature SensorINFOID:0000000012431292
The intake air temperature sensor is built-into mass air flow sensor
(1). The sensor detects intake air temperature and transmits a signal
to the ECM.
The temperature sensing unit uses a thermistor which is sensitive to
the change in temperature. Electrical resistance of the thermistor
decreases in response to the temperature rise.

COMPONENT PARTS
BATTERY TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Battery temperature sensor is int
egrated in battery current sensor.
The sensor measures temperature around the battery.
The electrical resistance of the t hermistor decreases as temperature
increases.
*: These data are reference values and are measured between battery temperature
sensor signal terminal and sensor ground.
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)INFOID:0000000012431296
The MIL is located on the combination meter.
The MIL will illuminate when the ignition switch is turned ON without
the engine running. This is a bulb check.
When the engine is started, the MIL should turn OFF. If MIL remains
ON or continues blinking, the on board diagnostic system detects a
DTC(s) that affects exhaust gas.
For details, refer to EC-57, "
DIAGNOSIS DESCRIPTION : Malfunc-
tion Indicator Lamp (MIL)".
Mass Air Flow SensorINFOID:0000000012431297
The mass air flow sensor (1) is placed in the stream of intake air. It
measures the intake flow rate by measuring a part of the entire
intake flow. The mass air flow sensor controls the temperature of the
hot wire to a certain amount. The heat generated by the hot wire is
reduced as the intake air flows around it. The more air, the greater
the heat loss.
Therefore, the electric current supplied to hot wire is changed to
maintain the temperature of the hot wire as air flow increases. The
ECM detects the air flow by means of this current change.
Oil Pressure Warning LampINFOID:0000000012431298
Oil pressure warning lamp is located on the combination meter.
It indicates the low pressure of the engine oil and the malfunction of
the engine oil pressure system.
Combination meter turns the oil pressure warning lamp ON/OFF
according to the oil pressure warning lamp signal received from
ECM via CAN communication.

Refrigerant Pressure SensorINFOID:0000000012431299
The refrigerant pressure sensor is installed at the c
ondenser of the air conditioner system. The sensor uses an
electrostatic volume pressure transducer to convert refrigerant pressure to voltage. The voltage signal is sent
to ECM, and ECM controls cooling fan system.
Stop Lamp Switch & ASCD Brake SwitchINFOID:0000000012431300
Stop lamp switch and ASCD brake switch are installed to brake pedal bracket.
ECM detects the state of the brake pedal by those two types of input (ON/OFF signal).
Throttle Control MotorINFOID:0000000012431301
The throttle control motor is operated by the ECM and it opens and closes the throttle valve.
The current opening angle of the throttle valve is detected by the throttle position sensor and it provides feed-
back to the ECM to control the throttle valve in response to driving conditions via the throttle control motor.
Throttle Control Motor RelayINFOID:0000000012431302
Power supply for the throttle control motor is provided to the ECM via throttle control motor relay. The throttle
control motor relay is ON/OFF controlled by the ECM. When the ignition switch is turned ON, the ECM sends
an ON signal to throttle control motor relay and batte ry voltage is provided to the ECM. When the ignition
switch is turned OFF, the ECM sends an OFF signal to throttle control motor relay and battery voltage is not
provided to the ECM.
Throttle Position SensorINFOID:0000000012431303
Electric throttle control actuator consists of throttle control motor,
throttle position sensor, etc. The throttle position sensor responds to
the throttle valve movement.
The throttle position sensor has two sensors. These sensors are a
kind of potentiometer which transform the throttle valve position into
output voltage, and emit the voltage signals to the ECM. The ECM
judges the current opening angle of the throttle valve from these sig-
nals and controls the throttle valve in response to driving conditions
via the throttle control motor.
ASCD Steering SwitchINFOID:0000000012431304
ASCD steering switch has variant values of electrical resistance for each button. ECM reads voltage variation
of switch, and determines which button is operated.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the exhaust
valve.
The ECM receives signals such as crankshaft positi on, camshaft position, engine speed, engine oil tempera-
ture and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ECM s ends ON/OFF pulse duty signals to the exhaust valve
timing (EVT) control solenoid valve depending on driving stat us. This makes it possible to control the shut/
open timing of the exhaust valve to increase engi ne torque and output in a range of high engine speed.
