Manual climate control system*
For a comfortable temperature, we recommend :
- in warmer times of the year, set the tempera-
ture so that it is only a few degrees below the
outside temperature .
- set the blower at a moderate speed
- don't direct the air flow directly on the passen- gers
IA/C l Switching the cooling mode* on and off
The cooling mode only functions with the blower
turned on . The air is not cooled and humidity is
not removed when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the windows. The cooling
mode switches off automatically when there are
cold outside temperatures.
~ Adjusting the blower
To prevent the windows from fogging over, the b lower should a lways run at a low speed. When
the w indows are fogged, we recommend using a
higher blower speed and tu rning the knob to~-

Automatic climate control system
We recommend pressing the IAUTOI button and
se tti ng the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C). The au
tomatic climate control system automatically
maintains a temperature once it has been set.
The air temperature coming from the vents, the
b lower speed, and the a ir distribution are also
automatically adjusted. In all heating mode func
tions except
defrost, the blower only switches to
a higher speed once the eng ine coolant has
reached a ce rtain temperature .

A WARNING
You should not use the recirculation mode for
an extended period since no fresh ai r is drawn
i n . With the air-conditioning* switched off,
the w indows can fog up, whic h increases the
risk of an accident.
IA/C l Switching the cooling mode on and off
The cooling system is turned on and off with the
IAJC I button. The air is not coo led and humidity is
not removed when cooling mode is switched off .
This can cause fog on the windows. The cooling
mode switches off automatically when there are
cold outside temperatures.
I AUTO I Switching automatic mode on and off
The automatic mode is turned on using the
IAUTOI button. AUTO mode switches off once a
button in the climate control system is pressed.
Automatic mode maintains a constant tempera
ture inside the vehicle. Air temperature, a irflow
and air distribution are controlled automatically.
When automatic mode is active, pressing the
IAUTOI button b rief ly act ivates the "Eco"
mode*
1> . I n "Ec o" mode*, all settings are low-

Eco is shown in the display. To exit "Eco" mode*,

I• I • I Setting the temperature
The temperature can be adjusted individually for
the driver and front passenger using the dials.
Temperatures between 60 °F ( +16 °C) and 84 °F
(+28 °C) can be set. If outside of this range, LO or
HI will appear in the climate control system dis
p lay. In both settings, the climate control runs
with constantly at the maximum cooling or heat ing level. The temperature is not regulated.
Synchronization: by pressing the IAUTOI button
for two seconds, the temperature setting for the
driver's side is transferred to the front passeng
er's side. This applies a temperature change to
the front passenger's side.
~ Adjusting the blower
To prevent the windows from fogging over, the b lower should a lways run at a low speed. You can
adjust the volume of air generated by the blower
to your preference. To have the blower regulated
automatically, press the IAUTO ! button .
Adjusting the air distribution
The air distribution is adjusted with the~, U!J
and ~ buttons. To have the air distribution regu
lated automatically, press the
IAUTOI button.

If the rear window defogger is activated when
the ignit ion is switched on, the battery manage
ment determines based on the battery charge if
i t is possible to turn o n. Otherwise, the rear w in
dow defogge r funct ions w ith the engi ne runni ng

mately 1 0 - 20 m inu tes, depending on the out
s ide temperature.

the seat heating function. To reduce the risk
of injury, these individuals should not use
seat heat ing .

To avoid damage to the heating elements in
the seats, do not kneel on the seats or place heavy loads on a small area of the seat.

- The setting for the seat heating on the driv
er's side is ass igned to the key that is in use .
- If the front passenger 's seat heat ing is
turned on, it will not turn on again automat
ically if more than 10 m inutes have passed
between sw itch ing the ign ition off and
switch ing it on again.
Auxiliary heater

In cool outside temperatures, the electr ic auxi li
ary heater helps the vehicle interior to wa rm
mo re quickly. The a uxiliary heater swi tches on
and off automatically accord ing to the vehicle
heating settings.
The "auxiliary heater " function can be sw itched

T he engine preheater s lowly warms the engine
coolant using a heating element when the vehicle
is parked. For this function, the cable provided
must be connected to a 120 Volt socket that is
protected from water and t hat is grounded a nd
equipped with a GFI circu it breaker, for example
in a ga rage. The engine reaches operating tem
perature much more quickly afte r sta rting when
t h e coolant is preheated . This reduces fuel con
s u mption and exha ust emissions dur ing the
warm-up phase.
Preheat ing the engine can take up to 3 hours de
pend ing on the temperature o utside.
Connecting the engine preheat er
- Only use the connector cable provided and a
suitable extension cord, if necessary .
- All cables and connectors that are used must not be damaged
~ li::,. .
-Open the cover(!).
- Plug the connector cable into the socket @.
- If necessary, plug the connector cable into the
extension cord. Only use highly durab le exten
sion co rds that are class 12 or better and can
be properly grounded to a three-prong wall
socket with a GFI circuit breaker and that are
not longe r than 100 feet (30 meters) .
- Plug the connector cable or extension cord into
a grounded 120 Volt wall socket that is pro
tected by a GFI circuit breaker and that is pro
tected against rain and other moisture. Never p lug the engine preheater into a conventiona l .._

ways protect the sockets from water, mois
ture and other fluids .
- Never plug the engine preheater into a con
ventional outlet, regardless of whether it is protected against a short circuit or not .

Short circuiting, fire, serious injuries and life
threatening or lethal electric shock can result
from using unsuitable or damaged sockets and connector cables/extension cords, using
electrical equipment incorrectly, and/or disre
garding general safety precautions.
- Always plug the extension cord into a 120 V
socket that is properly functioning, ground
ed, equipped with a GFI circuit breaker and
is protected against water, moisture and
other fluids.
- Never connect the engine preheater to a
conventional socket, even if the socket is
protected by a fuse.
- Always check the fuse on the 120 Volt GFI
socket before connecting the connector ca
ble to the engine preheater on the vehicle.
- Only use highly durable extension cords that
are class 12 or better and can be properly grounded to a three-prong wall socket with
a GFI circuit breaker . The extension cord
must not be longer than 100 feet (30 me
ters).
- Never use damaged connector cables, ex
tension cords or sockets . Always check the
connector cable, extension cord and sockets
for damage before using them. Damaged
parts must be replaced. If damaged, replace

the engine preheater connector cable at an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
service facility .
- Only use the connector cable provided to
connect the vehicle socket to a suitable
power source. Use a suitable extension cord
if necessary .
- Always disconnect the connector cable from
the vehicle socket before starting the en
gine. Switch off the power supply to the
connector cable and to the extension cord if necessary, or disconnect the cable or exten
sion cord from the 120 Volt socket equip
ped with a GFI circuit breaker. Never leave
the connector cable or extension cord con
nected to a live power source.
- Never make alterations or repairs to the
connector cables or extension cords that
supply power to the engine preheater or to
any components that affect the engine pre
heater.
- Always protect the connections from water,
moisture and other fluids. Always store the
connector cable and extension cord securely
and in a dry place when they are not being
used, and disconnect them from the power
source before storing .
(D Tips
Test the GFI circuit breaker once a month if
you use the engine preheater occasionally, and test it weekly if you use it regularly.

Driving
General information
The first 1,000 miles (1,500 km) and afterwards
The new engine needs to be run-in during the
first 1,000 miles (1,500 km).
For the first 600 mile s (1,000 kilom eter s):

than 2/3 of the max imum permitted RPM .

During the first few hours of driving, the engine's
internal friction is higher than later when all the
mov ing parts have been broken in. How well this
break-in process is done depends to a considera
b le extent on the way the veh icle is driven during
the first 1,000 miles (1,500 kilometers).

Extremely high eng ine speeds are automati
cally reduced. However, these rpm lim its are
programmed for an engine well run-in, not a
new engine.

speeds -upshifting early saves fuel, reduces
noise and protects the environment.
D riv ing
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to avo id vehicle damage when
driv ing th rough water, for example on flooded
roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the bot
tom of the vehicle body .
- Do not drive faster than walk ing speed .

After driv ing through water or mud, the brak
i ng effect can be reduced d ue to moistu re on
the brake d iscs and bra ke pads. A few careful
brake applications should dry off the brakes.

Vehicle components such as the engine,
transmission, suspension o r electrical system
can be severely damaged by d riving throug h
water.

- Determine the depth before dr iving through
water.
- Do not stop the vehicle, d rive in reverse or
switch t he engine off when d riving through

create waves that raise the water level and
ma ke it too deep for yo ur vehicle to drive

economy of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and
noise levels.
Fuel economy, env ironmental impact, and wear
on your engine, brakes and t ires largely depend
on three factors:
- your personal driving style
- operat ing cond itions
- technical limitations

Driving
If you anticipate what you need to do next and
drive economically, you can easily cut your fuel
consumption by 10-15 percent. This section will
give you some tips on how you can help the envi ronment and your pocketbook.

The consumption estimates as published by ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre
spond to your actual consumption on the
road, which will vary depending upon vehicle
load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc.
Drive smoothly and keep a lookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler
ating.
.. Avoid unnecessary accelerating and braking .
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler
ating. If you anticipate what is going to happen next, you will need to brake less and, thus, accel
erate less. Let the vehicle coast whenever possi
ble -for example when you see that the next traf
fic light is red.
Avoid full throttle
Driving at moderate speeds saves fuel and im
proves your mileage.
.. Try and keep well below your car's maximum
speed .
Accelerating gently reduces fuel consumption,
engine wear, and does not disturb the environ ment.
Fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and engine
noise increase disproportionately at high speeds.
If you drive at approximately three quarters of
top speed, fuel consumption will be reduced by
one half . Never drive faster than the posted
speed limit and weather conditions permit.

Even when your car is just idling it burns up fuel .
.. Shut the engine off when you are not driving
the vehicle .
.,. Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the en-
gine run at idle .
It is efficient to switch off the engine when stop
ped at railroad crossings and long red lights.
Turning the engine off for just 30 -40 seconds
saves more fuel than is burned by starting the
engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up
fully when it is running at idle . However, wear
and noxious emissions are especially high when
the engine is warming up . So you should drive
away as soon as you start the engine and avoid running at high rpms while the engine is still
warming up .
@ Note
Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights should come on to
indicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also produces
heat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other proper
ty.
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot
of fuel.
.. Have your vehicle serviced at regular intervals.
By having your vehicle regularly serviced by an
Audi dealer helps to ensure that it runs properly
and economically. The condition of your vehicle
not only affects its safety and ability to hold its
value, it also affects
fuel consumption.
Check your oil each time you fill your tank.
The amount of oil used is related to engine load
and speed.
It is normal for the oil consumption of a new en
gine to reach its lowest value after a certain mile -
