5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
When trouble arises

If the shift lever cannot be shifted (vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission)
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake pedal,
there may be a problem with the shift lock system (a system to pre-
vent accidental operation of the shift lever). Have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to
ensure that the shift lever can be shifted:
Set the parking brake.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system:
Turn the engine switch to the “ON” position.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system:
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to IGNITION ON
mode.
Depress the brake pedal.
Press the shift lock override
button with a flathead screw-
driver or equivalent.
The shift lever can be shifted
while the button is pressed.

If you lose your keys
New genuine Toyota keys can be made by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, and another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional using the other key and the key number stamped on your key
number plate.

If the electronic key does not operate properly
Unlocking and locking the doors
Use the mechanical key (P. 66)
in order to perform the following
operations:
Unlocks all the doors
Locks all the doors
Starting the hybrid system (hybrid vehicle)
Vehicles with a hybrid transmission
Ensure that the shift lever is in P and firmly depress the brake
pedal.
: If equipped
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted (P. 78) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart entry & start system and wireless
remote control cannot be used. In such cases, the doors can be
opened and the engine (except hybrid vehicle) or hybrid system
(hybrid vehicle) can be started by following the procedure below.

the electronic key to the
“POWER” switch.
The “POWER” switch will turn to
ON mode.
If any of the doors is opened or
closed while the key is being
touched to the switch, an alarm
will sound to indicate that the start
function cannot detect the elec-
tronic key.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “POWER” switch will turn to ACCESSORY mode. Modes
can be changed by pressing the “POWER” switch with the brake
pedal released. (The mode changes each time the switch is
pressed.)
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry
& start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “POWER” switch.
In the event that the hybrid system still cannot be operated,
contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
Starting the engine
Vehicles with a Multidrive
Ensure that the shift lever is in P and firmly depress the brake
pedal.

the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will turn to ACCESSORY
mode. Modes can be changed by pressing the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch with the brake pedal released. (The mode changes

Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.

Ensure that the shift lever is in N and firmly depress the brake
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.

Ensure that the shift lever is in N and depress the clutch
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will turn to ACCESSORY
mode. Modes can be changed by pressing the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch with the clutch pedal released. (The mode changes
each time the switch is pressed.)
Firmly depress the clutch pedal and check that the smart
entry & start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still can-
not be operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

Stopping the engine (except hybrid vehicle)
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to P and press the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the engine.
Except vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to N and press the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the
engine.
Stopping the hybrid system (hybrid vehicle)
Shift the shift lever to P and press the “POWER” switch as you normally do
when stopping the hybrid system.
Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommended that the
electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery is depleted.

If the doors cannot be locked or unlocked by the smart entry & start
system
Lock and unlock the doors by the mechanical key or wireless remote control.
When the electronic key does not work properly
Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on.

If the vehicle batter y is discharged (except hybrid vehicle)
The following procedures may be used to start the engine if the vehi-
cle's battery is discharged.
You can also call any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
If you have a set of jumper (or booster) cables and a second vehi-
cle with a 12-volt battery, you can jump start your vehicle by follow-
ing the steps below.
Open the hood. (P. 462)
Connect the jumper cables according to the following pro-
cedure:
1KR-FE engine
Connect a positive jumper cable clamp to the positive (+) battery
terminal on your vehicle.
Connect the clamp on the other end of the positive cable to the
positive (+) battery terminal on the second vehicle.
Connect a negative cable clamp to the negative (-) battery termi-
nal on the second vehicle.
Connect the clamp at the other end of the negative cable to a
solid, stationary, unpainted metallic point away from the battery
and any moving parts as shown in the illustration.
