Ashtrays/cigarette lighter
The auxiliary sockets can also be used for cigarette lighters.

Parking brake
To apply the parking brake, press the pedal (C). The brake is applied \
to the rear wheels.
When applying the parking brake
- Press firmly on the brake pedal.
- Press down pedal C as far as possible.
- Release the brake pedal and ensure that the vehicle is at a standstill\
.
- Put the gear selector in P (automatic transmission).
WARNING!
l Always apply the parking brake fully when the vehicle is parked.
l The indicator light will light up even if the parking brake has only bee\
n partially applied. Always
press down the pedal as far as possible.
l When parking the vehicle, in addition to applying the parking brake, alw\
ays put the gear selector in
the Park position.
Parking on a hill
l If the vehicle is pointing uphill, turn the front wheels so that they po\
int away from the curb.
l If the vehicle is pointing downhill, turn the front wheels so that they \
point toward the curb.
Releasing the parking brake
- Press firmly on the brake pedal.
- Pull out the parking brake release handle (A).
NOTE: There is also an audible signal that will sound if the vehicle is drive\
n with the parking brake
engaged.
l Release the parking brake pulling out the lower edge of the release hand\
le (A).
l If you inadvertently pull the plastic cover (B), it can be pressed bac\
k into place.

Opening the hood and tailgate
Opening/closing the hood
- Pull the lever (1) located under the left side of the dashboard to r\
elease the hood lock.
- Lift the hood slightly.
- Press up the release control (2) located under the front edge of the\
hood and lift.
To close the hood, place your hand on it and press down until the hood l\
ocks in the closed position.
WARNING!
l Do not grasp the ribs in the grille when closing the hood. If your finge\
rs protrude through the
grille, they could be injured on components in the engine compartment as\
the grille closes. We
recommend pressing down on the hood to close it.
l Check that the hood locks properly when closed!

Opening the tailgate
To open the upper section of the tailgate, pull the handle (A) downwar\
d.
To fold down the lower section of the tailgate, pull handle (B) upward\

Power windows
The power windows are controlled by buttons in the arm rests. The igniti\
on switch must be ON1
(ignition key in position I, II or the engine running) for the electri\
cally operated windows to function.
To lower: Press down the front edge of the button to the first detent (\
"stop").
To raise: Lightly pull up the front edge of the button to the first dete\
nt ("stop").
Auto up/down function (front doors only):
Either front door window can be opened or closed automatically.
Auto down: Press the front part of the button as far down as possible and release \
it immediately. To
stop the window at any time, pull the button up.
Auto up: Pull the front part of the button up as far as possible and release it \
immediately. To stop the
window at any time, press the button down.

NOTE: If a window is obstructed during auto-up, it will automatically reverse\
direction and return to its
starting position. If a window is repeatedly obstructed during auto-up o\
peration, an overload protection
circuit breaker will temporarily halt window function. The window will r\
eturn to normal function after a
brief cool-down period.
WARNING!
Always remove the ignition key when the vehicle is unattended.
Make sure that the windows are completely unobstructed before they are o\
perated.
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
1. The power windows will also function after the ignition has been swit\
ched off as long as neither of the front
doors has been opened.

Lockout switch for rear windows
The power rear door windows can be disabled by a switch located on the d\
river's door (see illustration).
If the light in the switch is OFF: The rear door windows can be raised or lowered with the buttons on
the rear door armrests or with the buttons on the driver's door armrest.\
If the light in the switch is ON: The rear door windows can only be raised or lowered with the buttons
on the driver's door armrest.
Power window on the front passenger's side
The control for the power window in the front passenger's seat operates \
that window only.

Power windows in the rear doors
The rear door windows can be operated with the control on each door and \
the switch on the driver's
door. If the light in the switch for blocking power windows in the rear \
doors (located in the driver's door
control panel) is on, the rear door windows can only be operated from t\
he driver's door.

Rearview mirror
To reduce glare from the headlights of following vehicles, use the contr\
ol to switch between the normal
and night-driving positions.
A. Normal position
B. Night position, reduces glare from following headlights
Autodim function (option)
The autodim function reacts to headlights from following traffic and aut\
omatically reduces glare.

NOTE: This function is automatically switched off when the gear selector is p\
laced in the Reverse
position.
Rearview mirror with compass (option)
The upper left-hand corner of the rearview mirror has an integrated disp\
lay that shows the compass
direction toward which the car is pointing. Eight different directions c\
an be displayed: N, NE, E, SE, S,
SW, W and NW. The display shows your car's orientation with respect to t\
rue north.
If the compass is activated, it will be displayed automatically when the\
ignition is in postilion II or when
the engine is running. The compass can be switched off or on by pressing\
the inset button on the rear
side of the mirror (see the inset illustration). This can be done with\
straightened paperclip or similar
object. The button is recessed approximately 1 in. (2.5 cm) in the mir\
ror.
