CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The speed sensor detects the wheel speed and sends the appropriate signals to the skid control ECU. The
skid control ECU converts these wheel speed signals into a 4−pulse signal and outputs it to the ECM via
the combination meter. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of these pulse sig-
nals.

HINT:
Read freeze frame data usingthe hand−held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when
a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was
running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air−fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data
from the time the malfunction occurred.
1CHECK OPERATION OF SPEEDOMETER
(a) Drive the vehicle and check if the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.
HINT:
The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer display is normal.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The Camshaft Position sensor (G2 signal), like the Crankshaft Position sensor, consists of a magnet and
an iron core wrapped in copper wire. The camshaft has 3 teeth and the Camshaft Position sensor is installed
so that it can detect these teeth passing by. When the camshaft rotates and the teeth pass by the Camshaft
Position sensor, the magnet on the Camshaft Position sensor creates a magnetic field and voltage is gener-
ated in the copper wire. When the crankshaft makes two rotation, voltage will be generated in the Camshaft
Position sensor 3 times.
The NE signal plate (crankshaft timing pulley) has 34 teeth and is installed to the crankshaft. The NE signal
sensor generates 34 signals at every engine revolution. Using the NE signal, the ECM detects both crank-
shaft angle and engine speed. In order to locate the top dead center position of the No.1cylinder, the ECM
uses the G2 and NE signals.

(b) Measure the resistance between the terminals of the camshaft position sensor.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft position sensor plate and a pick−up coil.
The sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The pick−up coil is made of an iron core
and magnet. The sensor plate rotates and as each tooth passes through the pick−up coil, a pulse signal is
created. The pick−up coil generates 34 signals for each engine revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM
calculates the crankshaft position and engine RPM. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and igni-
tion timing are controlled.

SRead value of hand−held tester
(a) Connect the hand−held tester to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and turn the hand−held tester ON.
(c) Select the item: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/MOBD / DATA LIST / ALL / ENGINE SPD.
The engine speed can be observed in DATA LIST using the hand−held tester. If there is no NE signals from
the crankshaft position sensor despite the engine revolving, the engine speed will be indicated as zero. If
voltage output from the crankshaft position sensor is insufficient, the engine speed will be indicated as lower
PRM (than the actual RPM).
