± INTRODUCTIONREPAIR INSTRUCTION
AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL (RM1018E)
NOTICE:
Confirm that the VSC warning light blinks.
VSC system will be reset when the engine is re-
started.
Fasten the vehicle with lock chains.
(b) NOTICES OF RELATED OPERATIONS TO VSC
(1) Do not carry out unnecessary installation and re-
moval as it might disorder the adjustment of related
parts to VSC.
(2) Be sure to carry out the preparation for operation
and the confirmation of operation completion in ac-
cordance with the instruction of the text and when
the related operations to VSC are performed.
10. FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER
CAUTION:
If a large amount of unburned gasoline flows into the converter, it may cause overheating and is a
fire hazard. To prevent this, observe the following precautions.
(a) Use only unleaded gasoline.
(b) Avoid prolonged idling.
Avoid idling the engine for more than 20 minutes.
(c) Avoid a spark jump test.
(1) Perform a spark jump test only when absolutely necessary. Perform this test as rapidly as pos-
sible.
(2) While testing, never race the engine.
(d) Avoid a prolonged engine compression measurement.
Engine compression measurements must be performed as rapidly as possible.
(e) Do not run the engine when the fuel tank is nearly empty. This may cause the engine to misfire and
create an extra load on the converter.

(a) Connect the hand±held tester to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(c) Check the intake air temperature.
(1) Select the item ºDIAGNOSIS / OBD/MOBD / DATA LIST / ALL / INTAKE AIRº and read its valuedisplayed on the hand±held tester.
Temperature: Equivalent to ambient temperature
(d) Check the air flow rate. (1) Select the item ºDIAGNOSIS / OBS/MOBD / DATA LIST / ALL / MAFº and read its value displayedon the hand±held tester.

NOTICE:
Conduct the test at normal operating ATF temperature 50 to 80 C (122 to 176 F).
(a)D range test Shift into the D range and fully depress the accelerator pedal and check\
the following points:
(1)Check up±shift operation.Check that 1 2, 2 3 and 3 O/D up±shift take place, and that the shift points conform to
the automatic shift schedule (See page 03±45).
HINT:
O/D Gear Up±shift Prohibition Control
Coolant temp. is 60 C (140 F) or less and vehicle speed is 70 km/h (43 mph) or less.
ATF temp. is 10 C (50 ) or less.
O/D and 3rd Gear Lock±up Prohibition Control
Brake pedal is depressed.
Accelerator pedal is released.
ATF temp. is 10 C (50 ) or less.
Coolant temp. is 60 C (140 F) or less.
When the 2nd start switch is on, there is no 1 2 up±shift and 2 1 down±shift.
(2)Check for shift shock and slip. Check for shock and slip at the 1 2, 2 3 and 3 O/D up±shift.
(3)Check for abnormal noises and vibration. Run in D range lock±up or O/D gear and check for abnormal noise and v\
ibration.
HINT:
The check for the cause of abnormal noise and vibration must be done ver\
y thoroughly as it could also be
sure to loss of balance in the differential, torque converter, etc. (4)Check kick±down operation. While running in the D range, 2nd, 3rd and O/D gears, check to see that the p\
ossible kick±down
vehicle speed limits for 2 1, 3 2 and O/D 3 kick±downs conform to those indicated in the
automatic shift schedule (See page 03±45).
(5) Check for abnormal shock and slip at kick±down.
(6) Check the lock±up mechanism.
Drive in D range O/D gear, at a steady speed (lock±up ON) of about 70 km/h (43 mph).
Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check that the engine speed does not change
abruptly.
If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock±up.
(b) S range test Shift to the S range, depress the accelerator pedal and check the follow\
ing points:
Shift operations.
Shifting the shift lever to º+º or º±º changes the shift \
range on the combination meter.
HINT:
Manual shift prohibition control is performed when:
Down±shifting causes engine overrun.
Down±shifting is required continuously. (Down±shifting to 1st gear may not be performed.)
(c) R range test Shift into the R range and fully depress the accelerator pedal and check\
for slipping.
CAUTION:
Before conducting this test, ensure that the test area is free from peop\
le and obstruction.
(d) P range test Stop the vehicle on a grade (more than 5 ) and after shifting into the P range, release the parking
brake. Then, check to see that the parking lock pawl holds the vehicle in plac\
e.

5 CHECK SPARK PLUG AND SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER
(a) Remove the ignition coil with igniter assembly.
(b) Remove the spark plug.
(c) Check the spark plug type.
Recommended spark plug:
DENSO madeSK20BR11
(d) Check the spark plug electrode gap.
Electrode gap:1.0 to1.1mm (0.039 to 0.043 in.)
Maximum electrode gap:1.3 mm (0.051in.)
NOTICE:
If adjusting the gap of a new spark plug, bend only the base
the ground electrode. Do not touch the tip. Never attempt
to adjust the gap on a used plug.
(e) Check the electrode for carbon deposits.
(f) Perform a spark test.
CAUTION:
Each injector connector must be disconnected.
NOTICE:
Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.
(1) Install the spark plug to the ignition coil with igniter,
and connect the ignition coil with igniter connector.
(2) Disconnect the injector connectors.
(3) Ground the spark plug.
(4) Check if spark occurs while the engine is being
cranked.
Standard: Spark jumps across electrode gap.
(g) Reinstall the spark plug.
(h) Reinstall the ignition coil with igniter.
