AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL (RM1018E)
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
(a)Connect the hand±held tester to the DLC3.
(b)Record the DTC and freeze frame data.
(c)Use the hand±held tester to set to the check mode (See page 05±5).
(d) Read the value on the misfire counter for each cylinder when idling. If \
the value is displayed on the
misfire counter, skip the following procedure of confirmation driving.
(e) Drive the vehicle several times with the engine speed, load and its surr\
ounding range shown with EN- GINE SPD, CALC LOAD in the freeze frame data or MISFIRE RPM, MISFIRE LOAD in\
the data list.
If you do not have the hand±held tester, turn the ignition switch OFF after the symptom is simulated
once. Then repeat the simulation process again.
HINT:
In order to memorize the DTC of the misfire, it is necessary to drive arou\
nd MISFIRE RPM, MISFIRE LOAD
in the following data list. Be sure not to turn the ignition switch OFF, because the diagnosis system is changed
from the check mode to the nomal mode and will result in all of the DTCs and\
the freeze frame data being
erased.
Engine SpeedTime
Idling5 minutes and 45 seconds or more
1,000 rpm4 minutes or more
2,000 rpm2 minutes and 30 seconds or more
3,000 rpm1 minute and 30 seconds or more
(f) Check if there is misfire by monitoring the DTC and the freeze frame data, an\
d then record them.
(g) Turn the ignition switch OFF and wait for at least 5 seconds.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
If the other DTCs besides misfire are memorized simultaneously, perform the troubleshooting for them
first.
Read freeze frame data using \f \b \f\f
Freeze frame data records the engine conditions
when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, it is useful for d\
etermining whether the vehicle
was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, the air±fuel ra\
tio was lean or rich, etc. at
the time of the malfunction.
If the misfire is not occured when the vehicle is brought to the workshop,\
it can be confirmed by repro-
ducing the condition of the freeze frame data. After finishing the repai\
r, confirm that there is no misfire
(See the confirmation driving pattern).
When either of SHORT FT #1 or LONG FT #1 the freeze frame data is over the range of 20%, there
is a possibility that the air±fuel ratio is inclining either to ºR\
ICHº (±20% or less) or ºLEANº (+20% or
more).
When COOLANT TEMP in the freeze frame data is less than 80
C (176
F), there is a possibility of
misfire only during warming up.
In case that the misfire cannot be reproduced, this may be because of th\
e driving with the shortage
of fuel, the use of improper fuel, a stain of ignition plug and etc.

Refer to DTC P0351 on page 05±439 for the wiring diagram of the ignition system.
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
(a)Connect the hand±held tester to the DLC3.
(b)Record the DTC and freeze frame data.
(c)Use the hand±held tester to set to the check (test) mode (See page 05±294).
If you have no hand±held tester, turn the ignition switch OFF after the symptom is simulated once. Then\
re-
peat the simulation process again.
HINT:
In order to memorize the DTC of misfire, it is necessary to drive around M\
ISFIRE RPM, MISFIRE LOAD for
the following period of time in the DATA LIST. Take care not to turn the ignition switch OFF. Turning the igni-
tion switch OFF switches the diagnosis system from check (test) mode to no\
rmal mode. So all DTCs, etc.,
will be erased.
Engine SpeedTime
Idling3 minutes and 30 seconds or more
1,000 rpm3 minutes or more
2,000 rpm1 minutes and 30 seconds or more
3,000 rpm1 minute or more
(f) Check whether there is misfire or not by monitoring the DTC and the freeze fr\
ame data, and then, re- cord them.
(g) Turn the ignition switch OFF and wait at least for 5 seconds.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
If DTCs besides misfire are memorized simultaneously, first perform the troubleshooting for them.
Read freeze frame data using the hand±held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions
when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, it is useful for deter\
mining whether the vehicle
was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, the air±fuel ra\
tio was lean or rich, etc. at
the time of the malfunction.
If the misfire does not occur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop,\
misfire can be confirmed by
reproducing the condition of the freeze frame data. Also, after finishing the repai\
r, confirm that there
is no misfire (See confirmation driving pattern).
When either of SHORT FT #1, LONG FT #1, SHORT FT #2 or LONG FT #2 in the freeze frame data
is over the range of 20 %, there is a possibility that the air±fuel ratio is inclining eit\
her to ºRICHº (±20
% or less) or ºLEANº (+20 % or more).
When COOLANT TEMP in the freeze frame data is less than 80 C (176 F), there is a possibility of
misfire only during warming up the engine.
If the misfire cannot be reproduced, the reason may be because of the dr\
iving the vehicle with lack
of fuel, the use of improper fuel, a stain on the ignition plug, etc.
Be sure to check the value on the misfire counter after the repair.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
(a) Connect the hand −held tester to the DLC3.
(b) Record DTCs and freeze frame data.
(c) Switch the hand −held tester from normal mode to check mode (see page 05 −20).
(d) Read the value on the misfire counter for each cylinder when idling. If the value is displayed on the misfire counter, skip the following procedure of confirmation driving.
(e) Drive the vehicle several times with the engine speed, load and its surrounding range shown with EN-
GINE SPD, CALC LOAD in the freeze frame data or MISFIRE RPM, MISFIRE LOAD in the DATA LIST.
If you have no hand −held tester, turn the ignition switch to OFF after the symptom is simulated once. Then
repeat the simulation process again.
HINT:
In order to memorize the misfire DTC, it is necessary to drive with MISFIRE RPM, MISFIRE LOAD in the
DATA LIST for the period of time in the chart below. Take care not to turn the ignition switch to OFF. Turning
the ignition switch to OFF switches the diagnosis system from check mode to normal mode and all DTCs,
freeze frame data and other data are erased.
Engine SpeedTime
Idling3 minutes and 30 seconds or more
1 ,000 rpm3 minutes or more
2,000 rpm1 minutes and 30 seconds or more
3,000 rpm1minute or more
(f) Check if there is misfire and DTC and the freeze frame data. Record the DTCs, freeze frame data and
misfire counter data.
(g) Turn the ignition switch to OFF and wait at least for 5 seconds.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
SIf DTCs besides misfire DTCs are memorized simultaneously, troubleshoot the non −misfire DTCs first.
SRead freeze frame data using the hand−held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions
when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the
vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air −fuel ratio was lean or
rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
SIf the misfire does not occur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop, the misfire can be confirmed
by reproducing the condition of the freeze frame data. Also, after finishing the repair, confirm that there
is no misfire (see confirmation driving pattern).
When only a general misfire fault code like P0300 is stored:
SErase the general misfire fault code from the hand −held tester.
SStart the engine and drive the confirmation patten.
SRead the value of the misfire ratio for each cylinder. Or read the DTC.
SPerform repairs on the cylinder that has a high misfire ratio. Or repair the cylinder indicated by the DTC.
SAfter finishing repairs, drive the confirmation pattern again and confirm that no misfire occurs.
SWhen any one of SHORT FT # 1, LONG FT # 1, SHORT FT #2 and LONG FT #2 in the freeze frame
data is over the range of ±20 %, there is a possibility that the air −fuel ratio is becoming RICH ( −20 %
or less) or LEAN (+20 % or more).
SWhen COOLANT TEMP in the freeze frame data is less than 80 ˚C( 176 ˚F), there is a possibility of
misfire only during engine warm −up.
SIf the misfire cannot be reproduced, the following reasons may apply: 1) the vehicle has low fuel, 2)
improper fuel is being used, and 3) the ignition plug is contaminated.
SBe sure to check the value on the misfire counter after the repair.

DIAGNOSTICS SFI SYSTEM (1ZZ–FE/3ZZ–FE)(From February, 2004)
AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL SUPPLEMENT
(RM1098E)
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
If any DTCs other than the misfire DTCs are set simultaneously, first troubleshoot them.
If a misfire does not occur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop, a mi\
sfire can be confirmed by
reproducing the condition of the freeze frame data. Also, after finishing repairs, \
confirm that misfires
do not recur (see the confirmation driving pattern).
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester II. Freeze frame dat\
a record the engine condition
when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data \
can help determine if the
vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air–fuel ratio was lean \
or
rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
On 6 and 8 cylinder engines, misfiring cylinders cannot be identified at\
high engine speed and only
a general misfire DTC P0300 is stored instead of the individual misfiring\
cylinder DTCs (P0301 to
P0308).
If a misfire starts in a high engine speed area or a misfire occurs only i\
n a high engine speed area, only
DTC P0300 may be stored.
When only a general misfire DTC P0300 is stored:
Erase the general misfire DTC from the ECM using the intelligent tester \
II.
Start the engine and perform the confirmation driving pattern.
Check the value of the misfire ratio for each cylinder. Or check the DTC(s).
Perform repairs on the cylinder that has a high misfire ratio. Or repair the cy\
linder indicated by the DTC.
After finishing repairs, perform the confirmation driving pattern again and c\
onfirm that no misfire oc-
curs.
When either of Short FT #1 and Long FT #1 in the freeze frame data is over the range of 20 %, there
is a possibility that the air–fuel ratio is becoming rich (–20 % \
or less) or lean (+20 % or more).
When Coolant Temp in the freeze frame data is less than 80 C (176 F), there is a possibility that mis-
fires occur only during engine warm–up.
If a misfire cannot be reproduced, the following reasons may apply: 1) th\
e vehicle has low fuel, 2) im-
proper fuel is being used, and 3) the ignition plug has been contaminated.
Be sure to check the misfire counter value after repairs.
1 CHECK OTHER DTC OUTPUT(IN ADDITION TO MISFIRE DTCS)
(a) Connect the intelligent tester II to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the intelligent tester ll ON.
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
(d) Read DTCs. Result:
Display (DTC Output)Proceed To
P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303 and/or P0304A
P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303 or P0304 and other DTCsB
HINT:
If any DTCs other than P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303
or P0304 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs.
