Cargo and luggage
Take notice of the following
information about storage pre-
cautions, cargo capacity and
load:
WARNING
■Things that must not be carried in the luggage compartment
The following things may cause a fire if loaded in the luggage compartment:
●Receptacles containing gasoline
●Aerosol cans
■Storage precautions
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may prevent the ped-
als from being depressed properly, may block the driver’s vision, or may result in items hitting the driver or
passengers, possibly causing an acci- dent.
●Stow cargo and luggage in the lug-
gage compartment whenever pos- sible.
●Do not stack cargo and luggage in the luggage compartment higher than the seatbacks.
●When you fold down the rear seats, long items should not be placed
directly behind the front seats.
●Do not place cargo or luggage in or
on the following locations.
• At the feet of the driver
• On the front passenger or rear seats (when stacking items)
• On the luggage cover
• On the instrument panel
• On the dashboard
●Secure all items in the occupant compartment.
●Never allow anyone to ride in the luggage compartment. It is not designed for passengers. They
should ride in their seats with their seat belts properly fastened.
■Load and distribution
●Do not overload your vehicle.
●Do not apply loads unevenly.Improper loading may cause deteri-oration of steering or braking con-
trol which may cause death or serious injury.

Trailer towing
Toyota does not recommend
towing a trailer with your vehi-
cle.
Toyota also does not recom-
mend the installation of a tow
hitch or the use of a tow hitch
carrier for a wheelchair,
scooter, etc. Your vehicle is not
designed for trailer towing or
for the use of tow hitch
mounted carriers.

■If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P.74) Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■When the steering lock cannot be released
When starting the engine, the engine switch may seem stuck in OFF. To free
it, turn the key while turning the steering wheel slightly left and right.
1 OFF (“LOCK” position)

key can be removed. (vehicles with
Multidrive: The key can be removed
only when the shift lever is in P.)
2 ACC (“ACC” position)

■When starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in
the driver’s seat. Do not depress the accelerator pedal while starting the engine under any circum-
stances.Doing so may cause an acci- dent resulting in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
■When starting the engine
●Do not crank the engine for more
than 30 seconds at a time. This may overheat the starter and wiring system.
●Do not race a cold engine.
●If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have your vehicle checked by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.

For starting the engine.
■Turning the key from ACC to OFF
1 Shift the shift lever to P (Multidrive)
or N (manual transmission).
2 Push in the key and turn it to OFF.
■Key reminder function
A buzzer sounds if the driver’s door is opened while the engine switch is in OFF or ACC to remind you to remove
the key.
1 Check that the parking brake is

3 Firmly depress the brake pedal
(Multidrive) or clutch pedal
(manual transmission).
and a message will be displayed
on the multi-information display. If it is
not displayed, the engine cannot be
started.
4 Press the engine switch shortly
and firmly.
When operating the engine switch, one short, firm press is enough. It is not
necessary to press and hold the switch.
The engine will crank until it starts or for up to 30 seconds, whichever is less.
Continue depressing the brake pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) until the engine is com-
pletely started.

■Caution when driving
Do not turn the engine switch to OFF while driving. If, in an emergency, you must turn the engine off while the
vehicle is moving, turn the engine switch only to ACC to stop the engine. An accident may result if the engine is
stopped while driving. ( P.296)

Do not leave the engine switch in ACC or ON for long periods of time without the engine running.

■Engine switch illumination
In the following situations, the engine switch is illuminated.
●When the driver’s or passenger’s door is opened.
●When the engine switch is in ACC or ON.
●When the engine switch mode is changed from ACC or ON to off.
Also, in the following situation, the engine switch flashes.
●When depressing the brake pedal while carrying the electronic key.
■If the engine does not start
●The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P.74) Contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
●If a message related to start-up is shown on the multi-information dis-play, read the message and follow the
instructions.
■If the battery is discharged
The engine cannot be started using the
smart entry & start system. Refer to P.335 to restart the engine.

■Steering lock function
●After turning the engine switch off and
opening and closing the doors, the steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating
the engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
●When the steering lock cannot be released, “Push Engine Switch while Turning Steering Wheel in Either
Direction” will be displayed on the multi-information display.Press the engine switch shortly and
firmly while turning the steering wheel left and right.
●To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, operation of the motor may be suspended if the engine
is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period of time. In this case, refrain from operating the engine
switch. After about 10 seconds, the steering lock motor will resume func-tioning.

■Operation of the engine switch
●If the switch is not pressed shortly and
firmly, the engine switch mode may not change or the engine may not start.
●If attempting to restart the engine immediately after turning the engine
switch off, the engine may not start in some cases. After turning the engine switch off, please wait a few seconds
before restarting the engine.

■Customization
If the smart entry & start system has been deactivated in a customized set-ting, refer to P.334.
Multidrive
1 Stop the vehicle completely.
2 Set the parking brake (P.141),
and shift the shift lever to P.
Check the parking brake indicator is
illuminated.
3 Press the engine switch.
The engine will stop, and the meter dis- play will be extinguished.
4 Release the brake pedal and
check that “ACCESSORY” or
“IGNITION ON” is not shown on
the multi-information display.
Manual transmission
1 Stop the vehicle completely.
2 If the parking brake is in manual
mode, set the parking brake.

Check the parking brake indicator is illuminated.

and complete stop. Activation of the steering lock in this circumstance may lead to an accident, resulting in death
or serious injury.

●If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have your vehicle checked by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.
■Symptoms indicating a malfunc-tion with the engine switch
If the engine switch seems to be oper- ating somewhat differently than usual, such as the switch sticking slightly,
there may be a malfunction. Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toy-ota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer immediately.

Modes can be changed by pressing

■Auto power off function
Multidrive: If the vehicle is left in ACC or ON (the engine is not running) for more than 20 minutes with the shift lever in P,
the engine switch will automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do
not leave the vehicle with the engine
WARNING
■Stopping the engine in an emer- gency
●If you want to stop the engine in an emergency while driving the vehi-cle, press and hold the engine
switch for more than 2 seconds, or press it briefly 3 times or more in succession. ( P.296)
However, do not touch the engine switch while driving except in an emergency. Turning the engine off
while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will
be lost. This will make it more diffi- cult to steer and brake, so you should pull over and stop the vehi-
cle as soon as it is safe to do so.
●If the engine switch is operated
while the vehicle is running, a warn- ing message will be shown on the multi-information display and a
buzzer sounds.
●Vehicles with Multidrive: To restart
the engine after performing an emergency shutdown, shift the shift lever to N and then press the
engine switch.
●Vehicles with manual transmission:
To restart the engine after perform- ing an emergency shutdown, depress the clutch pedal and then
press the engine switch.

Manual transmission: If the vehicle is left in ACC or ON (the engine is not running)
for more than 20 minutes, the engine switch will automatically turn off. How-ever, this function cannot entirely pre-
vent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in ACC or ON for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.
If the engine is stopped with the
shift lever in a position other than P,
the engine switch will not be turned
off. Perform the following procedure
to turn the switch off:
1 Check that the parking brake is
set.
2 Shift the shift lever to P.
3 Check that “IGNITION ON” is
displayed on the multi-informa-
tion display and press the
engine switch shortly and firmly.
4 Check that “ACCESSORY” or
“IGNITION ON” on the multi-
information display is off.
NOTICE
■To prevent battery discharge
●Do not leave the engine switch in
ACC or ON for long periods of time without the engine running.
●If “ACCESSORY” or “IGNITION ON” is displayed on the multi-infor-mation display, the engine switch is
not off. Exit the vehicle after turning the engine switch off.
When stopping the engine
with the shift lever in a posi-
tion other than P (vehicles
with Multidrive)
NOTICE
■To prevent battery discharge
Do not stop the engine when the shift lever is in a position other than P. If
the engine is stopped in another shift lever position, the engine switch will
not be turned off and remained to ON. If the vehicle is left in ON, battery dis-charge may occur.
