Function of rear axle steering
The rear axle steering is an electromechanical
auxiliary steering on the rear axle which adjusts the steering of the rear wheels according to theposition of the front wheels, depending on the
speed. This results in greater manoeuvrability and
improved driving stability, e.g. when cornering.
ECO start/stop function

q ECO start/stop function
%Depending on the engine, the ECO start/stop
function is not available in all drive programs.
Observe the status display in the driver dis-
play for this.
The engine is switched oM automatically in the fol-
lowing situations if all vehicle conditions for an automatic engine stop are met:
= You brake the vehicle to a standstill in trans-
mission position 005B or 005C.
= You depress the brake pedal when travelling at
a low speed.
If the system has detected one of the following situations, the engine will not stop:
= You stop at a stop sign and there is no vehicle
in front of you.
= The vehicle that stopped in front of you starts
up again.
= You manoeuvre, turn the steering wheel
sharply or engage reverse gear.%If the system detects an intelligent stop inhibi-
tor, for example, a stop sign, the engine will not stop.
If you activate the HOLD function or engage
the park position 005D, the engine can be
switched oM in spite of an intelligent stop
inhibitor.
The engine is restarted automatically if:
= You engage transmission position 005B or 005E.
= You depress the accelerator pedal.
= An automatic engine start is required by the
vehicle.
= You release the brake pedal.
=You release the brake pedal on a downhill gra-
dient and the vehicle does not roll.
= The vehicle rolls on a downhill gradient and
does not automatically enter glide mode at
20 km/h.
ECO start/stop function symbols in the driver dis- play:
= The symbol 00D6 (green) appears when the
vehicle is at a standstill: The engine was
switched oM by the ECO start/stop function.
= The symbol 00D5 (yellow) appears when the
vehicle is at a standstill: Not all vehicle condi- tions for an engine stop have been met.
= Neither the symbol 00D6 nor 00D5 appears
when the vehicle is at a standstill: An intelli- gent stop inhibitor was detected, e.g. a stop
sign.
= The symbol X appears: The ECO start/
stop function is deactivated or there is a mal-
function.
If the engine was switched oM by the ECO start/
stop function and you leave the vehicle, a warning
tone sounds and the engine is not restarted. InDriving and parking167

addition, the following display message appears inthe driver display:
Vehicle is operational Switch off vehicle before
exiting
If you do not switch oM the ignition, the ignition is
automatically switched oM aser three minutes.

q Deactivating or activating the ECO start/stop
functionPress button 1.
A display appears in the driver display when
switching the ECO start/stop function oM/on.%A continuous X display appears in the
driver display while the ECO start/stop func- tion is deactivated.
ECO display function
The ECO display shows an evaluation of your driv-
ing style on the driver display depending on the situation. This enables you to check the ePciency
of your driving style and adjust it if necessary. The
ECO display menu shows a ball 2 that will roll
forwards or backwards on a stylised road in the
direction of travel according to the driving charac-
teristics.
Above and below the road, lines mark the area for
an ePcient driving style 3. Ball 2 will light up in
green if it is rolling within these lines. Outside the lines, the ball will light up in orange.
The ECO display assesses the following criteria for an economical driving style:
= coasting at the right time
= consistent speed
= moderate acceleration
The overall assessment of your driving style "from start" is indicated with stars. It starts with Nve
empty stars, which you can Nll one aser the other
if you drive ePciently. When all Nve stars are Nl-
led, a glow appears in the background.%You can call up the ECO display function via
the Classic and Exclusive menus

ECO Assist function (vehicles with 48 V on-board
electrical system)%ECO Assist is active only in drive pro-
grams  and A .
ECO Assist analyses data for the vehicle's expec-
ted route. This allows the system to optimally
adjust the driving style for the route ahead, save
fuel and recuperate. If the system detects an
event ahead and the vehicle nears the event, ECO
Assist will calculate the optimum speed for maxi- mum fuel economy and recuperative energy
based on the distance, speed and downhill gradi-
ent.

If a route event that can be dealt with more eP-
ciently by adjusting your driving style is detected
ahead, corresponding symbol 2 will be dis-
played.
In addition, the

System limits
If the calculated route is adhered to when route guidance is active, ECO Assist will operate with greater accuracy. The basic function is also availa-ble without active route guidance. Not all informa-
tion and traPc situations can be foreseen. The
quality depends on the map data.
ECO Assist is only an aid. The driver is responsible
for keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in
front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good
time.
The system may be impaired or may not function in the following situations:
= If there is poor visibility, e.g. due to insuPcient
illumination of the road, if there are highly vari-
able shade conditions or in rain, snow, fog or
heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections.
= If the windscreen in the area of the multifunc-
tion camera is dirty, or if the camera is misted
up, damaged or covered.= If the traPc signs are hard to detect, e.g. due
to dirt, snow or insuPcient lighting, or
because they are covered.
= If the information in the navigation system's
digital map is incorrect or out-of-date.
= If the signs are ambiguous, e.g. road signs in
roadworks or in adjacent lanes.

%Depending on the engine and equipment, the vehicle has diMerent drive programs.
Use the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change
between the following drive programs:
The chosen drive program appears in the driver display.
Individual
= Individual settings
B Sport+
= Sporty driving
=Emphasises the vehicle's own oversteering
and understeering characteristics for a more
active driving style
= Only suitable for good road conditions, a dry
road surface and a clear stretch of road
C Sport
= Still sporty, but with an emphasis on stability
= Allows the sporty driver a more active driving
style
= Only suitable for good road conditions, a dry
road surface and a clear stretch of road
A Comfort
= Comfortable and economical driving
= Balance between traction and stability
= Recommended for all road conditions
 Eco
= Particularly economical driving
= Balance between traction and stability

Select Individual .Select and set a category.
Switching the reset display on/oM
Activate or deactivate Ask when starting.%This function must be activated for each user
proNle separately. Only when this function is
activated will the drive program and ECO
start/stop setting for the previous journey be
saved for the respective user proNle.
Function on: the next time the vehicle is started a
prompt appears asking whether the last active
drive program should be restored. If the ECO start/stop function was deactivated, an additionalprompt appears asking if the function should
remain deactivated.

active settings deviate from the standard set-
tings.
Function oM the next time the vehicle is started
the A drive program is set automatically. The
ECO start/stop function is activated automati-
cally.

DIRECT SELECT lever

q Function of the DIRECT SELECT lever
&WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-
rect gearshising
If the engine speed is higher than the idle
speed and you engage the transmission posi-
tion 005B or 005E, the vehicle may accelerate
sharply.
If you engage the transmission position
005B or 005E when the vehicle is at a stand-
still, always depress the brake pedal
Nrmly and do not accelerate at the same

&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to leaving children unattended in the vehi-
cle
If children are les unattended in the vehicle,
they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.
= get out and be struck by oncoming traPc.
= operate vehicle equipment and become
trapped, for example.
In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion by, for example:
= releasing the parking brake.
= changing the transmission position.
= starting the vehicle.
Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle.Keep the vehicle key out of the reach of
children.Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the trans-
mission position. The current transmission posi-
tion is shown in the driver display.005DPark position005EReverse gear005CNeutral005BDrive position
q Engaging reverse gear RDepress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever upwards past the Nrst point of
resistance.

q Engaging neutral N
Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever up or down to the Nrst point of
resistance.%To shis into neutral 005C with the ignition on,
push the selector lever up or down for several
seconds to the Nrst point of resistance.
Subsequently releasing the brake pedal will allow
you to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to push it or
tow it away.
Proceed as follows if you want the automatic transmission to remain in neutral 005C, even if the
ignition is switched oM or the driver's door is
opened:
Depress the brake pedal and engage neutral
005C when the vehicle is at a standstill.Release the brake pedal.Switch the ignition oM.Driving and parking173

on the driver's display.%If you then exit the vehicle leaving the key in the vehicle, the automatic transmission
remains in neutral 005C.
The park position 005D is automatically re-engaged
as soon as one of the following conditions is met:
= You switch to transmission position 005B or 005E.
= You press the button 005D.

Observe the notes on parking the vehicle
(  page 182).Depress the brake pedal until the vehicle
comes to a standstill.When the vehicle is at a standstill, press but-
ton 005D.
When the transmission position display shows
005D , the park position is engaged. If no trans-
mission position display 005D appears, secure
the vehicle to prevent it from rolling away.%Depending on the situation, it may take a short time until 005D is engaged. Therefore,always pay attention to the transmission posi-
tion display.
Park position 005D is engaged automatically if one
of the following conditions is met:
= You switch oM the ignition when the vehicle is
stationary and the transmission position is 005B
or 005E .
= You open the driver's door when the vehicle is
at a standstill or when driving at a very low
speed and the transmission position is 005B or
005E .
=
You switch oM the engine and bring the vehicle
to a standstill when the vehicle is rolling and the transmission position is 005B or 005E.
=
You switch oM the engine, bring the vehicle to
a standstill and open the driver's door when
the vehicle is stationary or when the vehicle is
rolling and the transmission position is 005C.
=
Engaging park position 005D automatically is
required by the vehicle.
%To manoeuvre with an open driver's door,
open the driver's door while at a standstill and
engage transmission position 005B or 005E again.
qEngaging drive position DDepress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever down past the Nrst point of
resistance.
When the automatic transmission is in transmis-
sion position 005B, it shiss the gears automatically.
This depends, among other things, on the follow- ing factors:
= The selected drive program
= The position of the accelerator pedal
= The driving speed
