Seat belt precautions
WARNING
All occupants of the vehicle mustwear their seat belts at all times.Seat belts and child restraints re‐duce the risk of serious or fatal inju‐ries for all occupants in the event ofa collision or sudden stop. Without aseat belt, occupants could be shiftedtoo close to a deploying air bag, strike the interior structure or bethrown from the vehicle. Properlyworn seat belts greatly reduce thesehazards.Always follow the precautions aboutseat belts, air bags and occupantseat contained in this manual.

WARNING
Riding with a reclined seatback in‐creases your chance of serious or fa‐tal injuries in the event of a collisionor sudden stop. The protection ofyour restraint system (seat beltsand air bags) is greatly reduced byreclining your seat. Seat belts mustbe snug against your hips and chestto work properly. The more theseatback is reclined, the greater thechance that an occupant's hips willslide under the lap belt causing seri‐ous internal injuries or the occu‐pant's neck could strike the shoulderbelt. Drivers and passengers shouldalways sit well back in their seats, properly belted, and with the seat‐backs upright.
Care of seat belts

WARNING
•When you return the rear seat‐back to its upright position afterthe rear seatback was foldeddown, be careful not to damagethe seat belt webbing or buckle. Besure that the webbing or buckledoes not get caught or pinched inthe rear seat. A seat belt withdamaged webbing or buckle willnot be as strong and could possiblyfail during a collision or suddenstop, resulting in serious injury. Ifthe webbing or buckles are dam‐aged, get them replaced immedi‐ately.
•Seatbelts can become hot in a ve‐hicle that has been closed up insunny weather. They could burn infants and chil‐dren.

•A seat belt or child restraint sys‐tem can become very hot if it isleft in a closed vehicle on a sunnyday, even if the outside tempera‐ture does not feel hot. Be sure tocheck the seat cover and bucklesbefore placing a child there.
(Continued)
(Continued)
•When the child restraint system isnot in use, store it in the luggagearea or fasten it with a seat beltor ISOFIX anchorage, so that it willnot be thrown forward in case of asudden stop or an accident.
•All children, even those too largefor child restraints, should ride inthe rear seat. All children, eventhose too large for child restraints, should ride in the rear seats.
WARNING
To reduce the chance of serious orfatal injuries:•Children of all ages are safer whenrestrained in the rear seat. A childriding in the front passenger seatcan be forcefully struck by an in‐flating air bag resulting in seriousor fatal injuries.
•Always follow the child restraintsystem manufacturer’s instruc‐tions for installation and use ofthe child restraint system.

•Always make sure the child re‐straint system is secured properlyin the vehicle and your child is se‐curely restrained in the child re‐straint system.
•Never hold a child in your arms orlap when riding in a vehicle. The vi‐olent forces created during a crashwill tear the child from your armsand throw the child against the ve‐hicle’s interior.
•Never put a seat belt over yourselfand a child. During a crash, the beltcould press deep into the childcausing serious internal injuries.
•Never leave children unattended ina vehicle – not even for a shorttime. The vehicle can heat up veryquickly, resulting in serious injuriesto children inside the vehicle.Even very young children may in‐advertently cause the vehicle tomove, entangle themselves in thewindows, or lock themselves orothers inside the vehicle.
(Continued)
(Continued)
•Never allow two children, or anytwo persons, to use the same seatbelt.
•Children often squirm and reposi‐tion themselves improperly. Neverlet a child ride with the shoulderbelt under their arm or behindtheir back. Always properly posi‐tion and secure children in the rearseat.
•Never allow a child to standup orkneel on the seat or floor of amoving vehicle. During a collisionor sudden stop, the child can be vi‐olently thrown against the vehi‐cle’s interior, resulting in seriousinjury.
•Never use an infant carrier or achild restraint system that "hooks"over a seatback, it may not pro‐vide adequate security in an acci‐dent.
•Seat belts can become very hot, especially when the vehicle isparked in direct sunlight. Alwayscheck the seat belt buckles beforefastening them over a child.
