Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
-
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin ­
ten tionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows :
" Tur n the ignition on.
" Step on t he br ake pedal.
At the same time

Automatic selector lever lock
T he selec tor leve r is lo cked in t he P and N posi ­
t io ns w hen the ig nition is tu rned on. You m ust
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position . As a reminder to the
driver, the following warn ing appears in the in ­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary appl y brake pedal while select­
ing gear
T he Au tomatic Sh ift Lock only fu nctio ns when the
veh icle is stationary o r at spee ds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At spee ds above abou t 1 mp h (2 km/h) the Au to­
ma tic Sh ift Lock is autom atically deact ivated in
the N positio n.
A time de lay e lemen t prevents the se lector lever
from lo cking whe n it i s moved thro ugh the N po­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Ne utral) for more than approximately 1 second,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
T he release but ton on the selector leve r preve nts
the lever from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Pressing this button deactivates
the se lector lever lock . Depending on the d irec­
t ion of the sh ift, the se lector lever locks at d iffer­
ent positions . The posit ions are highlighted in
the i llustration

Ignition key safety interlock
T he key cannot be removed from the ignition un ­
l ess the selector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed , the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

Starting the engine

Starting on an incline
.. Ac tivate the pa rk ing br ake .
.. With the driving gear selected, press the accel ­
erator pedal carefully. The parking brake will
re lease a utomatically if your seat belt is fas ­
tened.
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mountains, it may be useful to switch tempo­ rarily to the manual sh ift program in order to ad­
j ust the gears to the dr iv ing cond it ions by hand
¢ page 98 .
On slopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too m uch stress from being placed
on the locking mechanism.
A WARNING
- Unintended vehicle moveme nt can cause se­
rious injury .
- Never leave your veh icle with the engine
r u nning while in gear . If you mus t leave
your veh icle when the engine is running, ac­
tiva te t he pa rking bra ke and move the selec­
t o r lever to P .
- P owe r is still transmitted to the wheels
w hen t he engine is running at idle . To pre­
vent the vehi cle from "creeping", yo u m ust
keep your foot on the brake when the en ­
gine is running and the se lector lever is in 0/
Sor R or "tiptronic" mode is se lected .
- Do not press the acce le ra tor pedal when
changing t he se lector lever posit ion while
the vehicle is stat ionary and the engine is
running.
- Never shift into R or P whi le driving.
- Before driving down a s teep slope, reduce
your spee d and sh ift into a lower gear with
"t i pt ronic" .

-Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the b rake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always ho ld it in
place wi th the brake pedal o r parking brake.
- Never hold the veh icle on an incl ine with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicato r lamp

and a driver message appears ¢

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, neve r
have any driving pos ition engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these­
lector lever has secure ly engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 217. Otherw ise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
ho ld the vehicle in place by press ing the ac­
ce lerator pedal while a driv ing gear is se­
l ected. T his can cause the t ransmission to
ove rheat and can damage it. Activate the
parking b rake or press the b rake peda l to
prevent the vehicle from ro lling.
- Al low ing the ve hicl e to ro ll when the eng ine
i s s topped and the se lector lever is in
N w ill
damage the transmission beca use it is not
l ubricated under those ci rcumstances.
(D Tips
F or safety reasons, the parking b rake is re­
leased au tomatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
D riv ing
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
T he transmission automat ically selects a gear
that is su itable for the incline . Hill descent con­
t ro l tries to maintain t he speed ach ieved at the
t ime of b raking, w ith in phys ica l and te chnical
l imita tions.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes.
Hill descent cont rol switches off once the decline
levels out or you press the acce lerator pedal.
When the speed is set in the cru ise control sys­
tem ¢
page 92, hill descent control is also acti­
vated.
,&. WARNING
H ill descent cont rol cannot over come physical
limitat ions, so it may not be able to ma intain
a constant speed under all conditions. A lways
be ready to app ly the brakes.

The shif t paddles are activated when the se lector

t ime whi le in the D/S position, the transmission
will return to automatic mode. To keep sh ift ing

using the shift paddles, move the selector lever
to the right out of the D/S position.
The tra nsmissron auto matica lly s hifts up or down
before critical engine speed is reached.
The tra nsmiss ion on ly allows manual sh ifting
whe n the engine speed is w ith in the permit ted
range.
(D Tips
- When you shift into t he next lowe r gear, the
t ransmiss ion will downshift on ly when the re
is no possibili ty of over-revving the engi ne.
- Whe n the ki ck-down comes on, the trans­
mission w ill shif t down to a lowe r gear, de­
pend ing o n ve hicl e and engine speeds.
- Ti ptroni c is inoperat ive when the transm is­
sion is in the fail-safe mode.
- Hyb rid drive*: elect ric dr iving is not po ssib le
in t ipt ronic mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you depress the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point, the a utomat ic transmiss ion
downshifts into a lower gear, depending on vehi­
cl e speed and engine speed. The upsh ift into the
next highe r gear takes p lace on ce t he maxim um
spec ified eng ine speed is reached .
A.::!!.ARNING
-Please no te that t he drive wheels can spin if
kick-down is used on a smooth slippe ry road -
there is a risk of skidd ing.
Transmission malfunction
ml Tran smission: Pre ss brake pedal and select
gear again.
Press the brake pedal and select the desired se­
l ector lever position again. Yo u can then conti nue
driv ing.
ml Transmission o verheating: Plea se dri ve con-
servatively . .,,.

The transmission temperature has increased sig­
nificantly due to the sporty driving manner. Drive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of.
rm Transmission malfunction: You can continue
driving
There is a system mal funct ion in the transm is­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis­
sion . T he transmission is switching to emergency
mode. This mode only shifts in to certa in gears or
will no longer shift at all. The engine may stall.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified
repair faci lity immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector lev­
e r position and see your a uthorized Aud i dea le r
or qualified repair facility for assistance.
(D Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you should take the vehicle to an au­
t horized Audi dealership as soon as possible
to have the condition cor rected.
Driving
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

driver or sim ilar object, press the pin down and
hold it in that position .
.. Now press the release button and move these-
lector lever to the N position.
The selector lever can only be moved from the P
position if the key is in the lock and the ignition is
switched on. If the power supply fails (for exam­
ple, the battery is discharged) and the vehicle
must be pushed or towed, move the selector lev­
er to the N position f irst using the emergency re­
l ease .

Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .
This may ca use coll is ions and severe or fatal
injuries . When the vehicle enters dr ive ready

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­
lecto r lever is in the P position, the ignition
is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.
(D Note
- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

Starting the vehicle
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
The vehicle is started and turned off either wi th
the ign ition key <;>
page 81 or with the
IS TAR T ENG INE S TOPI button* 9 page 84 in t he
same way as a conventional vehicle .
W hen start ing the veh icle, the needles in the in­
s trument clus ter move upward briefly . When the
ve hicle enters d rive ready mode, the s tatus mes­
sage
hybrid ready appears briefly in t he instru­
ment cluster display and the needle in the power
meter points to
READY 9 page 101.
Depending on the ope ration mode of the hybrid
sys tem, there are two possible drive ready modes
after the vehicle has been started:
Drive ready mode with combustion engine

ton* . When leaving the vehicle always take
the key with yo u.
The power meter shows the hybrid drive condition and the availability of the hybrid system.

This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal when starting the vehicle .
Shift to N or P to start vehicle
This message appears if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the Nor P posi­
tions when starting the vehicle.
- Hybrid drive: System fault! Power
brakes, steering malfunction possible
lfthe indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the hybrid sys­
tem . The brake booster and the power steering
may stop working. Stop the vehicle in a safe loca­
tion as soon as possible.
