cause the oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve adjusters . This is
normal and not a cause for concern .
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certain period of time . Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
when that happens .

Steering lock
The steering locks when you turn the engine
off using the

and open the d river 's doo r. T he locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi­
tions. To do so , step on the brake pedal and
press and hold the
I START ENGINE STOP I but-

ton. The vehicle speed must be less than 6
mph/ 10 km/h.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop . The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous inJury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve­ hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine is switched off -there is a risk of damaging
the engine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it
off .

Ignition is on
This message appears and a warn ing tone
sounds if yo u open the dr iver's door when the
ignition is switched on.
No key identified
This message appears when the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP !* button is pressed if
there is no master key inside the vehicle or if
the system does not recognize it. For exam­
p le, the master key cannot be recognized if it
is co vered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief
case) which screens the radio signal. Electron­
ic devices s uch as ce ll phones can also inter­
fere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake peda l to start the engine .
Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the P or N
position . The engine can only be started with
the selector in these posit ions .
!I Is the key in the vehicle ?
This message appears in a veh icle w ith Con­
ve nience key* if the master key is removed
from the veh icle with the engine running . If
the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping
the eng ine and you also cannot start the en­
g ine again . Moreover, you cannot lock the ve ­
h icle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long with a warning signal. It appears if the
selector lever for the automatic transm ission
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition . Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, otherwise the veh icle is not sec ured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the vehicle
using the locking button* on the door
handle or using the remote key.
Turn off ignition before leaving car
Th is message appears if the driver's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switched on. Al­
ways switch off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicle. See also

Shift to P and turn off ignition, otherwise ve­
hicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened w hile the ignition is switched on and
t h e selecto r lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selecto r lever into the P position and
switch off the ignition when you exi t the vehi­
cl e. Otherwise the vehicle could roll. See also
¢ page 84 or¢ page 86.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ign ition key and
not the
I START ENGINE STOP I* button.
Electro mechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechonicol parking broke replaces
the hand broke.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanica l parking brake . The parking brake is
des igned to prevent the vehicle from ro lling
un intent ionally and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.

- T he integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park­

-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­

parking brake is not released until sufficient

must in no instance accelerate care lessly.

A WARNING
--When you leave your vehicle -even if on-
ly briefly -always remove the ignition
key. Th is applies pa rticularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could sta rt the eng ine, release
the par king brake or operate electrical
equ ipment (e.g. power windows). There
is the risk of an acc ident.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - par­
t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

Starting and automatically relea sing the
par king brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle sta rts to move.
Starting on slope s
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
i ng back . The braking force of the pa rking
brake is not released until sufficient dr iv ing
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
• Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back ­
ward .
• Yo u can re lease the switch once you a re su re
tha t you are deve lopi ng enough d riving
force a t th e wheels by depressing the acce l­
erator.
Depend ing on the we igh t of the rig (vehi cle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, yo u
may ro ll backwa rds as yo u start . You can pre­
vent rolling backwa rds by holding the parking
brake switc h pulled out and accelerating - just
as you would when starting on a hill with a
convent ional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and con ­
tinue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you p ull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct ion is initiated . The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system . The brake performa nce
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~& .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
i ng by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch is pu lled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accele rato r
peda l is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fai led or the brake pedal is obs tructed. .,..

Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full brake applicat ion.
The laws of physics cannot be suspended
even w ith ESC and its associated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS) . In corners and
when road or weather conditions are bad, a full b rake application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident.
Driver messages in the instrument
cluster
Caution: V ehicl e parked too steep
T his message appears when the park ing brake
is applied on an incl ine that exceeds about
30%.
In this case the braking power of the parking
brake may
not be adequate to prevent the ve­
h icle from rolling unintentionally .

This driver message appears when the switch
to release the parking brake was pressed. The
parking brake can on ly be released if yo u step
on the brake pedal and at the same time press
the switch or you automatically release the parking brake with the start ing ass ist

the yellow
JiJ symbol when there is a parking

Start-Stop-System
Description
Appl ies to vehicles : wit h Start -Stop-System
The Star t-S top -System can he lp inc rease f ue l
economy and red uce CO2 emissions .
I n the Start-Stop-mode, the eng ine shuts off
a utomatically when the vehicle is stopped,
such as at a traffic ligh t. T he ig nition remains
switched on during t his stop phase. The en -

gine wi ll be automatica lly restarted when
needed .
T he last Start-Stop-System se tting (on/off us­

Basic requirements for the Start -Stop
mod e
-The driver's doo r is closed.
- The driver 's seat be lt is la tched.
- The hood is closed.
- The vehicle must have been dr iven faster
than
2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the last stop.
- A trailer is not hitched to the vehicle.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake boos ter and the
power steering is not gua ranteed. You

necessary. Beca use you cannot steer and

.. When you take your foot off the brake ped­
al, the engine restarts. The indicator light
turns off .
Additional information
The engine will switch off in the P, 0/5 and N
positions as well as in manual mode. In the P
position, the engine will also remain off if you
take your foot off the brake pedal. The engine
starts again when you select another selector
lever position and take your foot off the brake
pedal.
If you select the R position during a Stop phase, the eng ine will start aga in .
Shift from 0/5 to P qu ickly to prevent the en­
g ine from starting unintentionally when shift­
ing through R.
You can determine for yourself if the engine
will stop or not by reduc ing or increasing the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example, if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traffic
or when tu rning, the eng ine will not switch off
when the vehicle is stationary. As soon as you
press the brake down harder, the engine will
switch off.
(D Tips
-Press the brake pedal during a stop
phase to keep the vehicle from rolling.
- When you stop and the start-stop-sys­
tem turns the engine off, the ignition re­
mains on. Make sure that the ignition is
switched off before exiting the vehicle.
- The ignition will turn off if you press the
!START ENGINE STOPI * button during a
stop phase.
- The image in the display is slightly differ ­
ent in some models.
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Start-Stop-System
The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel­
led for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if
certain conditions have been met. For exam­
ple , the eng ine will
not be switched off in the
following sit uations:
- The engine has not reached the minimum
required temperature for Start-Stop -mode.
- The interior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside temperature is extremely high/
low.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted
~page 81.
-The parking system* is switched on .
- The battery charge level is too low .
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or
there is a steering movement.

- After engaging the reverse gear.

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example . The engine restarts
without any act ion by the driver .
- The interior temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system.
- The windshield is beeing defrosted

-The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row.
- The battery charge level becomes too low.
- High power consumption .
@ Tips
If you shift into the 0/5 or N positions af­
ter shifting into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to switch off again.
Switching the Start-Stop-System on/off
manually
Applies to vehicles: with Sta rt-Stop-System
If you do not wish to use the system, you can
switch it off manually .

There is a malfunction in the Start-Stop-Sys­
tem. Drive the vehicle to an authorized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction.
Transmission: Car may roll! Shift to park!
This message appears if the selector lever is
not in the P position when the driver's door is
opened. You will a lso hear a warning tone.
Shift the selector lever to the P position . Oth­
erw ise, the vehicle could roll.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver
exceeds a previously stored maximum speed.
A warning tone will sound as soon as the vehi­ cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning

symbol appears in the display. The symbol's
appearance might be different in some mod­
els.
The speed warning system has
two warning
thresholds
that function independently of
each other and that have somewhat d ifferent
purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warn ing 1 to set the maxi­
mum speed wh ile you are dr iv ing. This sett ing
will remain in effect unt il you turn off the igni­
tion, assuming that you have not changed or
reset the setting.
The speed warning symbol. (USA models)/
• (Canada mode ls) in the warning 1 display
appears when you exceed the maximum
speed . It goes out when the speed fa lls below
the stored maximum speed.
The speed warn ing symbo l wi ll also go out if
the speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed
by more than about 25 mph (40 km/h) for at
least 10 seconds. The s tored maximum speed
is deleted .

Speed warning
2
Storing warning 2 is recommended if you al ­
ways
want to be reminded of a certa in speed,
for example when you are trave ling in a coun­
try that has a general maximum speed limit,
or if you do not want to exceed a specified
speed for winte r ti res.
The speed warning 2 symbol ,. (USA mod ­
e ls)/ . (Canada models) appears in the dis­
p lay when you exceed the stored speed limit.
Unlike wa rning 1, it will not go out until the
vehicle speed drops below the stored speed
limit.

Even though your vehicle is equipped with
a speed warning system, you shou ld sti ll
watch the speedometer to make sure you are not driving faster than the speed limit.
