Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on
current and average fuel mileage, average
speed, fuel rang e and driving tim e.

The fo llow ing informa tion is cont in uously
eva luate d by the trip compu ter and can be dis ­
p layed sequent ia lly in the instrument cl uster
d isp lay:
Fuel range
The estim ated cruising r ange in miles (k m)
appears in the display . This te lls you how far
your veh icle w ill be able to t ravel on the cur ­
rent tank of fue l and with the same dr iving
style. The display changes in increments of 6
m iles (10 km).
Average fuel mileage
The ave rage fue l economy in MPG (l/ 100 km)
since you last clea red the memory appears i n
this display. Yo u can use th is disp lay to adjust
your driving technique to achieve a desired
mileage.
Current fuel mileage
The instantaneo us fue l cons umption in miles
pe r gallo n (l/ 100 km) is shown in this d isp lay .
You can use this display to adj ust your dr iving
techniq ue to ach ieve a des ired mileage.
Fu el consumption is reca lcula ted at interva ls
of 33 yards (30 mete rs) . This display switches
to ga llons/ho ur (lite rs/hou r) when the vehicle
is not mov ing.

T he average spee d in mph ( km/ h) since the
l ast time the display was reset appea rs in the
display.
Elapsed time
T he length o f time that yo u have been d rivi ng
s in ce you last re se t the memory appea rs i n
t h is disp lay.
Distance
The distance t hat has been covered since the
l ast t im e the m emory was clea red appea rs in
t he d isplay .

Memories
The trip comput er is equipped with two fully
automatic memories as well as an efficiency
p rog ram*.

Single-t rip memory (Trip computer 1 )
The single-t rip memo ry sto res the trip infor­
mat ion from the time the ignition is turned o n
until it is tu rned off . If the trip is contin ued
w ithin 2 hours from the time the ignition was
turned off, the new data will be included in
the calcu lation of the current trip informa ­
tion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hour s
the memory is reset automatically.
Total -tr ip m emory (Trip compu ter 2 )
Unlike the sing le-trip memory, the tota l-trip
memory is not reset automatically. This per­
mits you to evaluate your driving data for the
entire period between manual resets.

Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two
switches on the windshield wiper lever.

The trip computer w ill not operate unless the
ignition is on. When you turn on the ignition, the function that was in use when you last
turned the ignition off wi
ll be displayed .
In add ition to info rm ation on the trip comput ­
er (trip computer 1, 2 and eff ic iency p ro­
gram*, the d igital speedometer and informa­
tion regarding the navigation system * can a l­
so be displayed. To switch the d isp lay between
the d ifferent informat ion, tap the
I RESE T I but­
ton ® briefly.
Sett ing values to ze ro
To de lete one current va lue from the trip com ­
puter, se lect the desired functio n and press
the
I RESET I button ® for at least one second.
The following values can be set to zero

- Average speed
- Elapsed t ime
- Distance
All currently d isplayed va lues are deleted in
the efficie ncy program*.

all the values in the sing le-trip or

All stored va lues w ill be lost if the veh icle
battery is disconnected.
Basic Settings for the trip computer
The MMI* or the radio operating unit is used
for setting the trip computer's basic settings.

T he efficiency program can help you to use
less fuel. It eval uates driving info rmation in
re ference to fuel consump tion and shows o th­
er equipment i nfluencing consumption . Fuel
economy messages

for efficient driving .

sumpt ion data from trip computer

Fuel economy messages

Fuel economy messages are displayed when
fuel consumpt ion is increased by certain con­
di tions .
If you fo llow these fuel economy mes­
sages, you ca n reduce your veh icle's consump­
t ion of fuel. The messages appea r automat i-
ca lly and are only d isplayed in the efficiency ..,.

program. The fuel economy messages turn off
automatically after a certain per iod of t ime .

-Once you have turned a fuel economy
message off, it will only appear again af­
ter you turn the ignition on again.
- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of time.
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢4 in
the instrument cluster
Q page 14, fig. 8 is
part o f the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) sys­
tem.
T he warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine starts and the idle has stabilized .
T his indicates that the MIL is working proper ­
ly .
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys ­
tem. If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erat ions) and have the condition corrected .

If the light illuminates, the electronic speed limiter may also be malfunctioning. For more

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission control system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been ass igned a code . In case of a mal­
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memo ry.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates after a refueling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed

In order to make an accurate diagnosis , the
stored data can only be displayed using spe ­
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
f or OBD).
In order to connect the spec ia l diagnostic
equipment , push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC). Th e DLC is located to the
right of the hood release

Your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the
necessary repair.
~ ARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collision!

Electronic speed
limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle . To reduce the
risk of sudden tire failure and loss of control if
the vehicle is ope rated at excessive speeds,
your veh icle also has an elect ronic speed limit­
er. The electronic speed limiter prevents your
ve hicle from going faster than the tire speed
rating. For more information

If the engine control unit rece ives fau lty vehi­
cle road speed signals, the Malfunction Ind i­
cator Lamp (MIU¢• will illuminate . If this
occurs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dea ler for assistance.
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits
and adjust your speed to suit prevailing
road, traff ic and weather conditions. Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed ra ting of the tires insta lled.
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function
of certain veh icle features and components. It
simply makes sure these features and compo­
nents are work ing properly . The Auto-Check
control wo rks as long as the ignition is on, as
well as whenever the vehicle is driven .
If a component is malfunctioning or if the need for an urgent repair has been detected,
this wi ll appear in the instrument cluster dis­
p lay. You will a lso hear a n aud ible warn ing
tone. The d isplays are color coded in either
red or yellow depending on their level of prior­
ity.
A red symbo l means

W arning . In certain s ituations, in­
formation message for the dr iver appear in
additio n to the red and yellow symbols .

Note about autom atic transmi ssion
T he Au to-Che ck Con trol wi ll automa tically
perform a test each t ime you sw itch on the ig­
nition. With the selecto r lever in P or N, the
following message appears in the display:
When stationar y appl y brake pedal while se­
lect ing gear
When you se lect a d iffe ren t gear (for exam­
ple: R, D, etc.), t he mes sage will disappea r
and the Auto-Check f unct ion is displayed .
If there is a malfunct ion, then the malfu nc·
tion message will appear about 15 seconds af­
te r you start the vehicle. At the same time you
will hear a wa rning tone.
Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to sym­
bols .

For example, if the transmission selector lever
is not in the P position when the engine is
turned off, the follow ing message appears :
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Door s do not lock if le ver is not in P .
The ign ition key can only be removed with the
selector in this position. This and other mes­
sages are bro ught up if a function cannot be
carr ied out .

If a red symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is also displayed au toma tically . ..,..

The driver message disappears after a few

E3 Alternator malfunction
If the . symbo l in t he instr ument pane l dis ­
play flashes, t hen t he re is a ma lfunction in t he
alternato r or the ve hicle elect ronics . A warn-
ing to the driver will appear, too. The driver

warning goes out after about 5 seconds, but it
can be brought up at any time by pressing the
ISETI button again.
Usu ally, you can still drive to the nex t dea ler­
ship. Turn off all but the most necessary elec­
trica l consumers, since these drain the vehi­
cle's battery.
@ Note
If the . warning symbo l (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instru ­
ment panel during the trip¢

then you have to stop immediately and
turn off the eng ine. The coolant pump is
not working anymore -danger of damage
to the eng ine!
BRAKE/( (j)) Brake system malfunction
A malfunction in the brake system must be
repaired as soon as possible .
If the warn ing /indicator light ~ (USA
models)/ . (Canada mode ls) in the instru­
ment cluster flashes, there is a brake system
malfunct ion . A dr iver message appears as
well to explain the malfunction in mo re de­
tail. The d rive r warning goes out after about 5
seconds, b ut i t can be brought up at any time
by pressing the
I SE T! button aga in .
Stop vehicle and check brake fluid l evel
~ Stop the vehicle.

take it to an expert at an authorized Audi

~ If the symbo l appears while you are driving,
it is possible that the traction co ntrol o r the
emerge ncy brake has malfunctioned .

possible that th e parking b rake cannot be
app lied.
It is also possible t hat the parking
b ra ke cannot be re le ased after i t has been
app lied . D rive to an authorized Aud i dea ler
or ot her qualified workshop to have t he mal ­
function corrected.
If t he ABS system malfu nctions, the ABS
warning/indicator light illumina tes together
with the brake system ma lfunction wa rning/
indicator light ¢.& .
A WARNING
-A lways observe the warn ings in
¢ page 226, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and check ing the
bra ke fluid.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard . Stop the car a nd get professiona l
assistance .
-USA models: If th e ~ warning light
a nd the
B warning light come on to­
gethe r, the rear whee ls cou ld lock up
fi rst under hard bra king. Rear wheel lock­
up can ca use loss of vehicle co ntrol and
an ac cident. Have yo ur vehicle rep aire d
immediate ly by yo ur authorize d Au di
dea ler o r a qua lified wor kshop. Drive
slowly and avo id sudden, hard brake ap­
plications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control and an acc ident. Have yo ur vehi­
cle repaired immed iately by your author­
i z ed A udi dealer o r a q ual ified wor kshop.
Drive s low ly and avoid s udden, hard
brake applications .

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
If the . symbol flashes in the display, either
t he eng ine cool ant
temperature is too h igh or
the eng ine coolant
level is too low . A dr iver
message appears as well to explain the mal­
function in more detail. The d rive r warning
goes out afte r about 5 seconds, but it ca n be
b rought up a t any time by p ress ing the
!SE TI
button again.

If the engine coolant level is co rrec t, then the
radia tor fan may be the cause o f the malf unc ­
tion .
A WARNING
-If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn off the engi ne and turn on the hazard

- Never open the hood if you see or hea r
steam o r coolant esca ping from the en­
gine compa rtme nt - you risk being s cald­
ed. Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant es caping.
- T he e ngine compartmen t of a ny veh icle
is a dan gerous area. Before you perform
any wor k in the engine compartment,
t ur n of the engine and allow it to coo l.

"l:::r. Engine oil pressure malfunction
T he red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair. Driving with a low
oil pressure indication is likely to
cause severe engine damage .
If the . symbo l on the disp lay flashes, the
engine oil pressure is too low. A driver mes­
sage appears as we ll to exp la in the malfunc ­
t io n in more detail. The dr iver warning goes
o ut afte r abo ut 5 seconds , but it can be
brought up at any t ime by p ressing the

(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low eng ine oil lev­
e l. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before going on a long trip .
