EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control .
The~ warn ing/ indicator light (Electron ic
Power Control) illuminates when you turn on
the ignition as a function check.
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while yo u are driving, then there is a mal­
funct ion in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunct ion corrected as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop .
;;,/C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the JiJ indicator lamp blinks whi le driving,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Reg ulation) is active­
ly regu lating.
If the
DJ i ndicator lamp illuminates , the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off . In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again . The system is func­
tion ing complete ly when the indicator lamp
switches off.
If the
II indicator lamp illuminates , the ESC
was switched off with the
I ~ O FF I button .
Stabiliza tion contr ol (ESC /ABS ): Fa ult! See

If the DJ indicator lamp and the ti] ABS ind i­
cator lamp illum ina te and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l loc k
is malfunctioning . This a lso interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active .
Drive to your author ized A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the ma lfunction corrected.

dicator light monitors the sa fety systems (e .g.
airbags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition on.

1:1.\.f(®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
W ith the parking brake app lied and the igni­
tion turned on, the. (USA models)/ . (Can­
ada models) warning/ind icator light illumi­
nates . After the ignition has been turned off,
the warning/ind icator light continues to i llu­
minate for about 30 seconds. If the parking
b rake is applied with the ignition turned off,
the warning/ind icator light illuminates for
about 30 seconds .
The warning/indicator light will go out when
the park ing brake is released.
If the war ning/ indicator light flas hes cont i nu­
ously
after appl ying the park ing b rake, brak­
ing fo rce is not sufficient to preve nt the vehi­
cle from roll ing uninten tionally. Please no te
the following:
- If the slope of the g round is too steep to
par k the vehicle , the add itiona l dr ive mes­
sage appea rs

BRAKEl< CD> Brake system
The warning/indicator light flashes if brake
fluid level is low, if there is an ABS system
malfunction or a parking brake malfunction.
The .. (USA mode ls) • (Canada models)
light ill uminates when the ign ition is turned on
. It goes out afte r the engine has been
started. This indicates that the brake warning
li ght is functioning properly.
If the br ake w arning light do es not light up
when the engine i s cranking , there ma y be a
malfunction in the elect rical sy stem . In thi s
ca se , conta ct an authorized Audi dealer .
If the brake sys tem warn ing/in dicator light
flashes, there is a b rake system ma lfunction.

Usu ally, you can still drive to the nex t dea ler­
ship. Turn off all but the most necessary elec­
trica l consumers, since these drain the vehi­
cle's battery.

A malfunction in the brake system must be
repaired as soon as possible .

ment cluster flashes, there is a brake system
malfunct ion . A dr iver message appears as
well to explain the malfunction in mo re de­
tail. The d rive r warning goes out after about 5
seconds, b ut i t can be brought up at any time

This message appears and a warn ing tone
sounds if yo u open the dr iver's door when the
ignition is switched on.
No key identified
This message appears when the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP !* button is pressed if
there is no master key inside the vehicle or if
the system does not recognize it. For exam­
p le, the master key cannot be recognized if it
is co vered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief
case) which screens the radio signal. Electron­
ic devices s uch as ce ll phones can also inter­
fere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake peda l to start the engine .
Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the P or N
position . The engine can only be started with
the selector in these posit ions .
!I Is the key in the vehicle ?
This message appears in a veh icle w ith Con­
ve nience key* if the master key is removed
from the veh icle with the engine running . If
the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping
the eng ine and you also cannot start the en­
g ine again . Moreover, you cannot lock the ve ­
h icle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long with a warning signal. It appears if the
selector lever for the automatic transm ission
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition . Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, otherwise the veh icle is not sec ured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the vehicle
using the locking button* on the door
handle or using the remote key.
Turn off ignition before leaving car
Th is message appears if the driver's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switched on. Al­
ways switch off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicle. See also

Shift to P and turn off ignition, otherwise ve­
hicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened w hile the ignition is switched on and
t h e selecto r lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selecto r lever into the P position and
switch off the ignition when you exi t the vehi­
cl e. Otherwise the vehicle could roll. See also

Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock

Operation
The electromechonicol parking broke replaces
the hand broke.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanica l parking brake . The parking brake is
des igned to prevent the vehicle from ro lling
un intent ionally and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.

- T he integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park­

A WARNING
--When you leave your vehicle -even if on-

children could sta rt the eng ine, release
the par king brake or operate electrical
equ ipment (e.g. power windows). There
is the risk of an acc ident.

t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

Starting and automatically relea sing the
par king brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle sta rts to move.
Starting on slope s
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
i ng back . The braking force of the pa rking
brake is not released until sufficient dr iv ing
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
• Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back ­
ward .
• Yo u can re lease the switch once you a re su re
tha t you are deve lopi ng enough d riving
force a t th e wheels by depressing the acce l­
erator.
Depend ing on the we igh t of the rig (vehi cle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, yo u
may ro ll backwa rds as yo u start . You can pre­
vent rolling backwa rds by holding the parking
brake switc h pulled out and accelerating - just
as you would when starting on a hill with a
convent ional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and con ­
tinue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you p ull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct ion is initiated . The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system . The brake performa nce
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~& .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
i ng by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch is pu lled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accele rato r
peda l is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fai led or the brake pedal is obs tructed. .,..
