Automatic headlights are only intended to assist the driver. They
do not relieve the driver of his responsibility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually a ccording to the current light
and visibility conditions . For example , fog cannot be detected by
the light sensors . So always switch on the headlights under these
weather conditions and when driving in the dark
tD .
[ i J Tips
• Th e light sensor for head light control is located in the rea r view
m irror mount. You shou ld therefore not app ly any st ickers to the
windshield in th is area in order to prevent m alfunct ions or fa ilure s.
• Th e sensitivity level fo r the light senso r se t a t the factory can be
changed in the MMI menu ~
page 64 in the automatic d riving lights
fu nction .
• When you remove your key from the ign ition wh ile the veh icle's
ligh ts ar e tu rned on, a bu zzer sounds as long as the d river 's door is
open.
• Please obey all laws when using the lighting systems described

Fog lights
The side marker lights or low beams must be sw itched on . When the
fog lights a re switc hed on, the green check lig ht at the edge of the
switch comes on .
I f automat ic dr iv ing light cont rol AUTO is act ivated , the low beams
a re switched on whe n the fog ligh ts are turned on.
Rear fog lights

Wh en the rea r fog l ights are turned o n, the y ellow check light at the

The functions are selected in the radio or in the MMI.
- Sel ect: Function button [CARI> E x terior lighting.
Com ing home
The coming home function ensures that after
tu rning off the ignition
and op ening th e driver' s door
the vehi cle periphery is illum inated i n
the dark . In addition, the front fog lights, the ta il lights and the
license p late ligh t are tu rned on. The power-on time can be set for a
per iod from O (off) to 60 seconds .
Leaving home
The leaving home funct ions ensures that
when unlocking , the vehicle
per iphery is illuminated in t he da rk. In addi tion, the front fog l igh ts,
the tai l lights and t he license p late light are turned on . This function
can be tu rned on and off.
Automatic driving ligh ts*
W hen the light switch is in the AUTO=> page 62 position, the switch­
on point of the l ights can be changed in the automatic driving light
function.
Daytime running lights*
T he daytime running light s ca n be tu rn ed on o r off using this f unc­
tion. If the funct ion is active, the dayt ime runn ing lights are turned
on a utomat ica lly when the ignition is switched on.
In the vers ions for some co unt ries it is not poss ible to switc h off the
daytime running lights or they may not have daytime running lights.

The coming home/ leaving home f unction is avai lab le only with the
switch in the AUTO position .•
Daytime running Lights (DRL) (USA models)
T he daytime running lights are turned on au tomatically
w hen the ignition is switched on.
On vehicles w ith xenon lights the daytime running lights will come on
autom atically when the ig ni tio n is t urned on and t he lig ht switch

Daytime running Lights (Canada models
only)
When you turn on the ignition the daytime running lights
will come on automatically.

ignition is switched on, there is a difference between vehicles with bi­
xenon lights and halogen lamps:
• On vehicles with b i-xenon lights only the dayt ime running lamps in
the headlights will come on.
• On vehicles with halogen lights the front fog lights, side marker
lights and tail lights come on automatically.

Instrument lighting
The basic brightness of the illumination for the instru­
ments, the center console and the display can be
adjusted.
- Press the knob to release it.

Be aware of the following difference between
mode ls built to US or Canadian specifications:
• USA models : illumination of the inst rument cluste r (gauges and
needle s), da sh and center c onsol e around the gearshift l ever i s
c o ntrolled b y a light senso r lo cated in the instrument panel. The
in strument panel illumination will autom atically be come dimmer
as the day light fades away and eventu all y will go out completel y .,

• Canada models : inst rument p anel illumin ation will stay br ight
regardles s of the inten sity of ambient light. Alw ay s be aware of

in time to fading daylight by turning the light switch to po sition

(or "AUTO" if your car is equipped with this feat ure) to turn on your
headlights .•

Xenon headlights
After starting the engine, the xenon head lights are automat ically
adjusted to the load and ang le of t he vehicle (for e xamp le, dur ing
acce leration and brak ing) . This prevents oncom ing traffic from expe ­
r ienc ing unnecessary headlight glare from yo ur xenon head lights.
If the sy ste m is not opera ting p roperly, a warning symbol in t he Auto ­
Check Control is displayed~
page 35. •

Adaptive Light
Wh en driving around bends, the relevant ar ea of the road
is better illuminated .

The benefit of adaptive light is that the curve and the edge of the road
are better illum inate d~ fig. 68. Dyn am ic a daptive light is con trolled
automatically, depend ing on ve hicle speed and steering whee l angle .
When driving around bends, the headlights are contro lled accord ing
t o s teer ing whee l angle . So t hat there is no bla ck ho le ahea d of the
vehicle , the two ma in beams pivot at d ifferent angles.
[I] Tips
The system works above a speed of about 6 mph (10 km/h) .•
Emergency flashers A
T h e eme rgency flash ers m akes ot her mot ori st s a ware

When the e merge ncy flashers are on, all fou r turn sig nals blink at the
same t ime. The turn signal indicator lights¢¢ in the i nstr ument
cl uste r, as well as the ligh t in the eme rge ncy flasher switch ~ blink
likewise . The emergency flashers also wo rk when the ignition is
t urned off. .,_

The emergency flashers will turn on automatically if you are in an acc ident where the airbag has deployed.
(I) Tips
You shou ld turn on th e emergency flashers when :
• you are the last vehicle standing in a traffic jam so that any other
vehicles com ing can see yo u, or when
• your vehicle has broken down or you are in an emergency situa­
tion, or when
• your vehicle is being towed by a tow truck or if you are towing
ano ther vehicle behind you .•
Turn signals -¢ ¢ and high beam 1[D lever
The lever on the le~ side of the steering column is used to
operate the turn signals and the high beam as well as the
headlight flasher .

- Push the lever up as far as it can go to turn on the right
turn signal or down to tu rn on the le ft turn signal
~ fig. 70.
- Move the lever br iefly until you meet resistance and
release it to flash three times.
- Move the lever (up or down) until you meet res istance a nd
hold it there to determine the flashing t ime for the turn
signals.
High beam ~D ®
- Push the lev er forward to switc h on the high beam .
- Pu ll the leve r back towards you to switch o ff the high
beam.
Headlight flasher ~D ©
- Pull the lever toward the steering wheel to use the head­
light flasher.
Notes on these featu res
• Th e turn signals only work with the ign ition t urne d on. The ind i­
cator lights ¢ or ¢ in the instrument cluster also blink.
• After you have t urned a corner, the tu rn signal switches off auto­
matically.
• The
high beam works only when the head lights are on . The ind i­
cator light ~Din the instrument cluster illuminates when the high
beams are on.
• T he
headlight flasher works only as long as you ho ld the lever -
even if there are no lights switched on . The ind icator light ~D in the
instrument cluster illuminates when you use the headlight flasher. _.,

Interior lights
Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights for the driver
and the front passenger.

- Press the button @. The LED in the button illuminates.

- Press the button @. The LED in the button goes out.
Front r eading lights ~
- Press one of the switches @ to turn the right or left
reading light on or off.
With the door contact circuit, the interior lights turn on as soon as
you unlock the vehicle or open the doors. The interior lights are also turned on when the
ignition key is removed. The lights turn off about
30 seconds after the doors are closed . When the vehicle is locked or
when the ign ition is turned on, the inter ior lights are turned off.
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
m inutes to prevent battery dra ining.
The brightness of the lights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are sw itched on and off. •
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the passengers.

Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

Vanity mirror
The van ity m irrors on the sun visors are cove red. When the lid is
opened @, the mirror light in the headliner turns on automatically.

switch @to the left/r ight . In ve hicles with a rain sensor*, the wind­
shield wipers are activated a utomatically s tarting at a speed of 2 mph
(4 km/h) . The higher the sensi tivity of the ra in sensor* is set (sw itch
@ to the right), the earlier the windsh ield wipers react to mo isture
on the w indshield .

© -Clean the windshield. To eliminate water droplets, the wind­
shield wiper per forms one a fterwipe o pera tion a fter severa l seconds
wh ile dr iving . You can swi tch this funct ion off by moving the lever to
posit ion © with in 10 seconds of t he afterwipe operation . The after­
w ipe function is react ivated the ne xt t ime the ignit ion is switched on .
Cleaning the headlights*. The headlight washer system * only func ­
ti ons whe n the light is switc hed on. The headlights are automat ically
cleaned the first time and every fifth t ime the lever is moved to posi-.,

tion ®· They are also cleaned every time you hold the lever in position
© for long er than 2 seconds .
& WARNING
• The rain sensor is only intended to assist the driver. The driver
is still responsible for manually switching the wipers on according
to the visibility conditions.
• The windshield may not be treated with water-repelling wind­
shield coating agents. Unfavorable conditions, such as wetness,
darkness, low sun, can result in increased glare. Wiper blade
chatter is also possible.
• Properly functioning windshield wiper blades are required for
a clear view and safe driving~ page
71, "Installing new wiper
blades ".

• In the case of frost, check whether the windshield wiper blades are
frozen to the windshie ld. Switching on the windshield wipers can
damage the wiper blades!
• Prio r to using a car wash, the windsh ield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in position 0) . This prevents unintentional
switching on and damage to the win dshield wiper system.
[ i J Tips
• The windshield wipers are switched off when the ignition is turned
off . Activate the windsh ield wipers after the ignition is switched back
on by moving the windshield wiper lever to any position.
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades result in streaking. This can
affect the rain sensor* function . Check your windshield wiper blades
regularly .
• Th e washer fluid nozzles of the w indshield washe r system are
heated at low temperatures when the ignition is on. •
When stopping temporarily, e .g . at a traffic light, the set speed of
the windsh ield wipers is automatically reduced by one speed.•
Service position
The windshield wiper blades are replaced in the service
position.

- If the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield, bring
the windshield wiper lever to the basic position @
~ page 69, fig . 74.
-Select: Function button [ CAR] > Windshield wipers >
Service position.
• On -changing the windshield wipe r blades can only be done if you
br ing the wiper arms to the service position~ fig. 75 . You will also
avoid paint damage to the hood when working on the wipers in this
position .
• Off -the windshield wipers are moved to their initial position
again.
