(d) Shift solenoid valve SL1, SL2, SL3 and S4:
Fail safe function:
If either of the shift solenoid valve circuits develops an open or short, the ECM turns the other shift solenoid
”ON” and ”OFF” in order to shift into the gear positions shown in the table below.
Manual shifting as shown in the following table must be done (In case of a short circuit, the ECM stops send-
ing the current to the short circuit solenoid).
Even if starting the engine in the fail−safe mode, the gear position remain in the same position.

HYDRAULIC TEST
1. PERFORM HYDRAULIC TEST
(a) Measure the line pressure.
NOTICE:
SPerform the test at the normal operation fluid temper-
ature the 50 to 80˚C(122 to176˚F)
SThe line pressure test should always be carried out in
pairs. One technician should observe the conditions
of wheels or wheel stoppers outside the vehicle while
the other is performing the test.
SBe careful to prevent SST hose from interfering with
the exhaust pipe.
SThis check must be conducted after checking and ad-
justing engine.
SPerform under condition that A/C is OFF.
SWhen conducting stall test, do not continue more
than10 seconds.
(1) Warm up the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid).
(2) Lift the vehicle up.
(3) Remove the engine under cover.
(4) Connect hand−held tester to DLC3.
(5) Remove the test plug A on the transaxle case front
left side and install the SST.
SST 09992−00095 (09992−00231, 09992−00271)
NOTICE:
There is a difference in installation point between D posi-
tion and R position.
(6) Start the engine.
(7) Using hand−held tester, shift to D position and hold
3rd gear by active test, and measure the line pres-
sure in idling.
Specified line pressure:
ConditionD position
Idling372 to 412 kPa
(3.8 to 4.2 kgf/cm2, 54 to 60 psi)
(8) Turn the ignition switch off.

AVENSIS Supplement (RM1045E)
TURBO CHARGER SYSTEM (1CD−FTV)(From September,
2003)
PRECAUTION
1. MAINTENANCE PRECAUTION
(a) Do not stop the engine immediately after pulling a trailer,
or after high speed or uphill driving. Let the engine idle for
20 to 120 seconds before turning the ignition switch to
OFF (according as the driving condition, the idling time
varies).
(b) Avoid quickly accelerating the pedal or increasing the en-
gine speed immediately after starting a cold engine.
(c) If the turbocharger is found defective, it must be replaced.
Also, inspect the source of the trouble including condi-
tions of the turbocharger that having been used. Repair
or replace the followings if necessary:
(1) Engine oil (level and quality)
(2) Oil lines leading to the turbocharger
(d) Pay due attention when removing and reinstalling the
turbocharger assembly. Do not drop, grasp, or give shock
to the easily−deformed assembly parts such as the actua-
tor or push rod when removing or reinstalling.
(e) Before removing, cover both the intake and exhaust ports
and the oil inlet to prevent dirt or foreign objects from be-
ing introduced.
(f) If replacing the turbocharger, check the oil pipe for depos-
its. If necessary, replace the oil pipe, too.
(g) Thoroughly remove old gasket sticking to the lubrication
oil pipe flange and turbocharger oil flange.
(h) If replacing the bolt(s) or nut(s), Toyota genuine parts
must be used to prevent breakage or deformation.
(i) If replacing the turbocharger, put 20 cm
3(1.2 cu in.) of
fresh oil into the turbocharger oil inlet hole, then turn the
turbine wheel by hand to spread oil to the bearing.
(j) If overhauling or replacing the engine, cut the fuel supply
after reassembling and crank the engine for 30 seconds
to feed oil throughout the engine. Run the engine at idle
for 60 seconds.

(h) Wipe up any gasoline.
(i) Reconnect the negative (−) battery cable.
(j) Connect the hand−held tester to the DLC3.
(k) Measure the fuel pressure.
Fuel pressure:
196 to 588 kPa (2 to 6 kgf/cm
2, 28 to 85 psi)
If pressure is high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
If pressure is low, check the fuel hose connections, fuel pump,
fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator.
(l) Disconnect the hand−held tester from the DLC3.
(m) Start the engine.
(n) Measure the fuel pressure at idle.
Fuel pressure:
196 to 588 kPa (2 to 6 kgf/cm
2, 28 to 85 psi)
(o) Stop the engine.
(p) Check that the fuel pressure remains as specified for 5
minutes after the engine has stopped.
Fuel pressure:147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm
2, 21 psi) or more
If pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure
regulator and/or fuel injectors.
(q) After checking the fuel pressure, disconnect the negative
(−) battery cable and carefully remove SST and the fuel
tube connector to prevent gasoline splash.
(r) Reconnect the No. 1 fuel pipe (fuel tube connector).
CAUTION:
After taking the precautions, connect the fuel tube con-
necter (quick type).
2. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION AND CHECK FOR
FUEL LEAKS
(a) When using the hand−held tester.
(1) Connect the hand−held tester to the DLC3.
(2) Turn the ignition switch ON and the hand−held tes-
ter main switch ON.
