S Freeze frame data
Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a
malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze
frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running
or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air −
fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the
malfunction occurred.
2. CHECK DLC3
(a) The v ehicle’s ECM uses t he I SO 9 1 41− 2( Eur o −OBD)
communication protocol. The terminal arrangement of
the DLC3 complies with ISO 1503 1− 03 and matches the
ISO 9 141− 2 format.

HINT:
Connect the cable of the hand −held tester to the DLC3, turn the
ignition switch to ON and attempt to use the hand −held tester.
If the screen displays UNABLE TO CONNECT TO VEHICLE,
a problem exists in the vehicle side or the tester side.
S If the communication is normal when the tool is connected
to another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 on the original ve-
hicle.
S If the communication is still impossible when the tool is
connected to another vehicle, the problem is probably in
the tester itself, so consult the Service Department listed
in its instruction manual.
3. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Battery voltage: 11 to14V
If voltage is below 11 V, recharge the battery before proceeding.
4. CHECK CHK ENG
(a) The CHK ENG comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position and the engine is not running.
HINT:
If the CHK ENG is not illuminated, troubleshoot the combination
meter circuit (see page 05 −299).
(b) When the engine is started, the CHK ENG should turn off. If the CHK ENG illuminates again, the diagnosis system
has detected a malfunction or abnormality in the system.

MECHANICAL SYSTEM TESTS
1. PERFORM MECHANICAL SYSTEM TESTS
(a) Measure the stall speed.
The object of this test is to check the overall performance of the transaxle and engine by measuring
the stall speeds in the D and R positions.
NOTICE:
SPerform the test at the normal operating ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) temperature 50
to 80˚C(122 to176˚F).
SDo not continuously run this test for longer than10 seconds.
STo ensure safety, do this test in a wide, clear level area which provides good traction.
SThe stall test should always be carried out in pairs. One technician should observe the condi-
tions of wheels or wheel stoppers outside the vehicle while the other is doing the test.
(1) Chock the 4 wheels.
(2) Connect an hand−held tester to the DLC3.
(3) Fully apply the parking brake.
(4) Keep your left foot pressed firmly on the brake pedal.
(5) Start the engine.
(6) Shift into the D position. Press all the way down on the accelerator pedal with your right foot.
(7) Quickly read the stall speed at this time.
Stall speed: 2,250 á150 rpm
(8) Do the same test in the R position.
Stall speed: 2,250 á150 rpm
Evaluation:
ProblemPossible cause
(a) Stall engine speed is low in D and R positions
SEngine power output may be insufficient
SStator one−way clutch not operating properly
HINT: If the value is less than the specified value by 600 rpm or
more, the torque converter could be faulty.
(b) Stall engine speed is high in D position
SLine pressure is too low
SForward clutch slipping
SU/D (Underdrive) brake slipping
SU/D (Underdrive) one−way clutch not operating properly
SNo.1one−way clutch not operating properly
(c) Stall engine speed is high in R position
SLine pressure is too low
SReverse clutch slipping
S1st and reverse brake slipping
SU/D (Underdrive) brake slipping
(d) Stall engine speed is high in D and R positionsSLine pressure is too low
SImproper fluid level

(b) Measure the time lag.
(1) When the shift lever is shifted while the engine is idling, there will be a certain time lapse or lag
before the shock can be felt. This is used for checking the condition of the direct clutch, forward
clutch, and1st and reverse brake.
NOTICE:
SPerform the test at the normal operating ATF temperature 50 to 80˚C(122 to176˚F).
SBe sure to allow1minute interval between tests.
SPerform the test three times, and measure the time lags. Calculate the average value of the three
time lags.
(2) Connect an hand−held tester to the DLC3.
(3) Fully apply the parking brake.
(4) Start and warm up the engine and check idle speed.
Idle speed: approx. 700 rpm (In N position and A/C OFF)
(5) Shift the lever from N to D position. Using a stop watch, measure the time from when the lever
is shifted until the shock is felt.
Time lag: ND less than1.2 seconds
(6) In the same way, measure the time lag for NR.
Time lag: NR less than1.5 seconds
Evaluation (If NDorNR time lag is longer than the specified):
ProblemPossible cause
ND time lag is longer
SLine pressure is too low
SForward clutch worn
SNo.1one−way clutch not operating properly
SU/D (Underdrive) one−way clutch not operating
SU/D (Underdrive) brake worn
NR time lag is longer
SLine pressure is too low
SReverse clutch worn
S1st and reverse brake worn
