Seat belts
Before starting the vehicle, make sure that
you and your passengers have fastened your seat belts.
Floor mats
WARNINGl Keep floor mats clear of the pedals by
correctly laying floor mats that are suita-
ble for the vehicle.
To prevent the floor mats from slipping out of position, securely retain them usingthe hook etc.
Note that laying a floor mat over a pedal
or laying one floor mat on top of another can obstruct pedal operation and lead to a
serious accident.Carrying children in the vehi-
cle
l Never leave your vehicle unattended
with the key and children inside the ve-hicle. Children may play with the driv-
ing controls and this could lead to an ac- cident.
l Make sure that infants and small chil-
dren are properly restrained in accord-
ance with the laws and regulations, and
for maximum protection in case of an accident.
l Prevent children from playing in the lug-
gage compartment. It is quite dangerous
to allow them to play there while the ve- hicle is moving.
Loading luggage
When loading luggage, be careful not to load above the height of seats. This is dangerous
not only because rearward vision will be ob- structed, but also the luggage may be projec-ted into the passenger compartment underhard braking.
Parking brake

The Electric parking brake is the system that
applies the parking brake by the electric mo- tor.
NOTEl You may hear an operation noise from the
vehicle body when operating the Electric
parking brake. This does not indicate a mal-
function and the Electric parking brake is operating normally.
l When the auxiliary battery is weak or dead,
the Electric parking brake cannot be applied
or released. Refer to “Emergency starting” on page 9-02.
l You may feel the brake pedal moving when
operating the Electric parking brake.

while depressing the brake pedal.
When the parking brake is applied, the brake
warning lamp (red) in the instrument cluster and the indication lamp (A) on the Electric
parking brake switch will come on.

the Electric parking brake. Doing so may cause overheating and/or premature wear of
brake parts, reducing brake performance.NOTEl If the Electric parking brake must be applied
in an emergency situation, pull and hold the
Electric parking brake switch to apply the
Electric parking brake. At that time, the fol- lowing warning display will appear in the
multi-information display and a buzzer will
sound, however you should continue to pull and hold the Electric parking brake switch.
l When parking on steep grades, pull up the
Electric parking brake switch twice (once
more after the operation is completed once).
The maximum effect of the parking brake will be obtained.
l If the parking brake does not hold the vehi-
cle stationary after the foot brake is released,
contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point.
l When the operation mode of the power
switch is other than ON, if the Electric park- ing brake is applied, the Electric parking
brake indication lamp comes on for a while.
NOTEl If the Electric parking brake switch is re-
peatedly operated in a short time, the follow-
ing warning display will appear in the multi- information display and the Electric parkingbrake will temporarily stop working. In such
case, wait for approximately 1 minute until
the warning display disappears, and operate the Electric parking brake switch again.
l The brake warning lamp (red) and the indi-
cation lamp on the Electric parking brakeswitch may blink. This does not indicate a malfunction, the lamps go off when/if theElectric parking brake is released.
l Depending on the situation, the Electric
parking brake may be applied automatically.
Refer to “Brake auto hold” on page 7-32.

ating.
l The select position is in the “D”
(DRIVE) or the “R” (REVERSE) posi-
tion.
l The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
When the parking brake is released, the brake
warning lamp (red) and the indication lamp on the Electric parking brake switch go off.
Before driving, be sure that the Electric park-
ing brake is released and the brake warning lamp is off.CAUTIONl After the Electric parking brake switch has
been operated to apply or release the Electric parking brake, if the brake warning lamp
(red) and the indicator on the Electric park-
ing brake switch remain blinking or the Electric parking brake warning lamp (yel-
low) remains illuminated, the Electric park- ing brake system may be malfunctioning and
the Electric parking brake may not be ap- plied or released. Immediately park your ve-
hicle in a safe place and contact the nearest MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point.
l If a vehicle is driven without releasing the
Electric parking brake, the brake will over-
heat, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure.
l If the brake warning lamp (red) does not go
off after the parking brake has been released, the brake system may be malfunctioning.
Contact the nearest MITSUBISHI MOTORS
Authorized Service Point.CAUTIONl If the acceleration of the vehicle seems ab-
normally slow after the vehicle has been parked with the Electric parking brake ap-
plied in cold weather, stop the vehicle in a
safe place, then apply and release the Elec- tric parking brake. If the vehicle acceleration is still slow, contact the nearest
MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point.NOTEl When the operation mode of the power
switch is other than ON, the parking brake
cannot be released.
l If the Electric parking brake does not auto-
matically release, it may be released by man-ual operation.
l When the select position is other than the
“P” (PARK) position, if you try to releasethe Electric parking brake without depress-
ing the brake pedal, the warning display will appear.

or death from accidentally moving the se-
lector lever or the accumulation of toxic
exhaust fumes on the passenger compart- ment.
Where you park
WARNINGl Do not park your vehicle in areas where
combustible materials such as dry grass
or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur.
When leaving the vehicle
Always carry the key and lock all doors and
the tailgate when leaving the vehicle unatten-
ded.
Always try to park your vehicle in a well lit
area.
CAUTIONl When you leave the vehicle, be sure that you

gerous.
Always adjust the mirrors before driving.
l Your vehicle is equipped with convex type

Retracting and extending the
outside mirrors
E00601102126
The outside mirror can be folded in towards the side window to prevent damage when
parking in narrow areas.
CAUTIONl Do not drive the vehicle with the mirror fol-
ded in.
The lack of rearward visibility normally pro-
vided by the mirror could lead to an acci- dent.
Retracting and extending the
mirrors using the mirror re- tractor switch
With the operation mode in ON or ACC,push the mirror retractor switch to retract the
mirrors. Push it again to extend the mirrors to their original positions.
After placing the operation mode in OFF, it is possible to retract and extend the mirrors us-
ing the mirror retractor switch for approxi-
mately 30 seconds.
CAUTIONl It is possible to retract and extend the mir-
rors by hand. After retracting a mirror using
the mirror retractor switch, however, you should extend it by using the switch again,
not by hand. If you extended the mirror by
hand after retracting it using the switch, it would not properly lock in position. As a re-
sult, it could move because of the wind or
vibration while you are driving, taking away your rearward visibility.NOTEl Be careful not to get your hands trapped
while a mirror is moving.
l If you move a mirror by hand or it moves af-
ter hitting a person or object, you may not be
able to return it to its original position using the mirror retractor switch. If this happens,
push the mirror retractor switch to place the mirror in its retracted position and then push
the switch again to return the mirror to its original position.
l When freezing has occurred and mirrors fail
to operate as intended, please refrain from repeated pushing of the retractor switch as
this action can result in burn-out of the mir- ror motor circuits.
