- The intelligent technology of hill hold assist
cannot overcome the lim itations imposed by
natural physical laws. The increased comfort
offered by hill hold ass ist should not cause
you to take safety risks .
- Hi ll hold assist cannot hold the veh icle in
place on all hills (for example, if the ground
is slippery or icy).
- To reduce the risk of an accident, always
make sure the vehicle is situated safely
wh ile stat ionary.
Off road driving
General information
The electronic stabilization contro l (ESC) func
tions were enhanced for driving offroad. Offroad
mode can be activated when driving in situat ions
where slippage or a differential lock function is
necessary
Q page 149. The hill descent ass ist is
a lso available, which automatically brakes the ve
hicle and maintains a constant speed as a result
~page 150. In addition, your Audi prov ides con
tinuous all wheel drive.
H owever , your Aud i is not a purely offroad vehi
cle . Your vehicle was not designed to d rive unde r
extreme ope rating conditions such as driving in
an expedition style.
Only drive in terrain that is suitable for the vehi
cle and your driving ability . Never take any un
necessary risks!
Before driving offroad
- Check the eng ine oil level, the tire pressure, the
coolant level and the fluid level in the washer
fluid reservoir .
- Store pieces of luggage and other objects in the
luggage compartment and secure them from
s li ding out of place.
Driving
After driving offroad
-After driving offroad, remove branches and
other debris from the radiator grille, under
body, and wheels . Look especially for foreign
objects (such as stones) that may be stuck in
the tire tread.
- Clean the vehicle body and underbody and in
spect the vehicle for possible damage.
- Clean the windows, headlights, tail lights and
the license plate if they are dirty.
- Per form a brake test (especially after driving
through water).
_& WARNING
- Be especially cautious and aware when driv
ing under difficu lt cond it ions and when off
road. Veh icle damage and injuries may occur
when dr iv ing at excessively high speeds or
with incorrect driving maneuvers.
- Always adjust your speed and driving style
to the roads, terrain, traffic and weather
conditions . Drive especially slowly if there is
low visibility when offroad.
- Please note that the wheels can sp in more
and the vehicle can swerve when in offroad
mode, espec ially when the road is slippery
or has loose surface material.
- Driving stability is reduced when in offroad
mode.

Weight distribution
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car res ults
i n a hig hly unstable dist ribution of weight. If this
cannot be avo ided, drive at ve ry low speeds o nly
to avoid the risk of lo sing s teeri ng con trol.
A "balanced" rig is eas ie r to operate and cont rol.
T his means that the tow veh icle should be loaded
to the exte nt poss ible a nd permiss ible , while
keep ing the tra ile r as lig ht as possib le unde r th e
circumstances . Whenever possible, transfer
some cargo to the l uggage compa rtment of the
tow vehicle whi le observ ing tongue load req uire
ments and ve hicle loading considerat ions.
Speed
T he higher the spee d, the more d ifficult i t be
comes for the drive r to co ntro l the rig. Do not
drive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, weather or w ind
conditions a re unfavorable -part icularly when
going downhill.

to stop the sway ing by accele rating .
Observe speed lim its. In some areas, speeds for
ve hicles towing trai lers are lower than for reg ular
veh icles.

hi ll, shift into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the veh icle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to ove rheat and fail.
Air suspension*
If you are connecting a trailer to a fa cto ry -ins tal
led trai ler hitch, trai ler mode a utomat ic all y
switches on in the ai r suspensio n. This will limit
the reg ulation by the a ir s usp ension whi le dr iv -

ing . If you want to swi tch off tra iler mode wh ile
driving, for example when using a bicycle rack system, se lect in the Infota inment system :
IM ENUI button> Vehicle > left control button>
Vehicle settings > Air suspension: trailer .
If the vehicle has a retrofitte d tra iler hitc h, the
trailer mo de might not switch on automatically .
In this case, switch the tra iler mode on before
hitc hing the tra iler and switch it off after un
hitc hing the tra ile r.
Coolant tempe rature
The coo lant tempe rat ure gauge c:::> page 11 m ust
be obse rved caref ully. The coolant temperature
can increase if you drive o n long inclines in a low
gear at high eng ine speeds. Reduce your speed
i mmediately if the LEDs in the top part of the d is
play turn on .

- Set the parking brake .

- Never open the hood when there is steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned . Wait until no steam or coolant is
escaping .
- Keep ch ildren away from the engine com
partment .
- Never spill flu ids on a hot engine. These flu
ids (such as the anti -freezing agent con
ta ined in the coolant) can ignite .
- Avoid short circu its in the electrical system .
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the rad iator fan can sw itch
on even if the ignition is switched off, which
increases the risk of in jury .
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan
sion tank when the eng ine is warm . The
cooling system is under pressure.
- To protect your face, hands, and arms from hot steam or coolant, cove r the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If tests need to be performed w ith the en
gine running, there is additional danger d ue
to moving components (such as the ribbed

be lt, alternator and radiator fan) and from
the high-voltage ignition system.
- Do not under any circumstances activate the
throttle inadvertently (for example, by hand
from the engine compartment) if the veh i
cle is stat ionary but the eng ine is running
and a gear is engaged . Otherwise, the veh i
cle will start to move immediately and this
could result in an acc ident .
- Pay attent ion to the following warnings
when work on the fue l system is required:
- Do not smoke .
- Never work near open flames .
- Always have a working fire extinguisher

- All work on the battery or elect rical system
in your vehicle can result in injuries, chemi
cal b urns, acc idents or burns . Because of
this, all work must be performed
onl y by an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility.
- To reduce the risk o f electric shock and in
jury, never touch the following components
when the engine is running or is being start•
ed:
- Ign ition cable
- Other components in the electronic high -

- If you must check or perform work on the
engine while it is running:
- Set the parking brake firs t and then se lect
the P selector lever position.

that clothing, jewelry or long hair do not become caught in the radiator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do

nents. Tie back long hair before beginn ing
work and do not wear clothing that can hang down into the engine .

to make sure it is latched correctly . The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.
- If you notice that the hood is not latched
while you are driving, stop immediately and
close it, because driving when the hood is
not latched increases the r isk of an accident . .._

Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used must conform to exact speci
fications.

Cooling system
Coolant
The engine cooling system is filled with a mixture

The coolant addit ive is made of anti-freez ing and
corros ion protection agents. Only use the fo llow
ing coolant add it ives. These additives may be
mixed w ith each other.

Coolant loss usually indicates there is a leak . Im
mediately drive your vehicle to an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Aud i Service Facility
and have the cooling system inspected. If the
cooling system is not leaking, a loss can come
from the coolant boiling through overheating
and being pushed out of the cooling system.
A WARNING
-The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the coolant expansion tank cap
when the eng ine is hot. This increases the
risk of burns .
- The coolant additive and the coolant can be
dangerous to your health. For this reason,
keep the coolant in the original container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poisoning.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ign ition is switched off, which
increases the risk of injury.
CD Note
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. There may be air in the cooling sys
tem, which increases the risk of engine dam
age . If this is the case, do not continue driv
ing . See an authorized Audi dealer or author
ized Audi Service Facility for assistance.

A WARNING
- If the brake flu id level is below the MIN
marking, it can impair the braking effect
and driving safety, wh ich increase the risk of
an accident. Do not continue dr iving. See an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Serv ice Facility for assistance.
- If the brake fluid is old, bubbles may form
in the brake system dur ing heavy braking.
This would impair braking performance and
driving safety, which increases the risk of an
accident.
- To ensure the brake system functions cor
rectly, only use brake fluids that comp ly
with VW standard 501 14 or FMVSS-116 DOT 4.
