BC–78BRAKE CONTROL – VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM

9. SPEED SENSOR CHECK (WHEN USING SST CHECK
WIRE):
(a) Check the speed sensor signal.
(1) Drive the vehicle straight forward. Drive the
vehicle at a speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) or higher
for several seconds and check that the ABS
warning light goes off.
HINT:
The signal check may not be completed if the
vehicle has its wheels spun or the steering
wheel turned during this check.
(b) Stop the vehicle.
NOTICE:
• Before performing the speed sensor signal
check, complete the deceleration sensor and
master cylinder pressure sensor checks.
• The speed sensor signal check may not be
completed if the speed sensor signal check is
started while turning the steering wheel or
spinning the wheels.
• After the ABS warning light goes off, if
vehicle speed exceeds 80 km/h (50 mph), a
signal check code will be stored again.
Decelerate or stop the vehicle before the
speed reaches 80 km/h (50 mph).
• If the signal check has not been completed,
the ABS warning light blinks while driving
and the ABS system does not operate.
HINT:
When the signal check has been completed, the
ABS warning light goes off while driving and blinks
in the test mode pattern while stationary.
10. YAW RATE SENSOR CHECK (WHEN USING SST
CHECK WIRE):
(a) Check the zero point voltage of the yaw rate sensor.
(1) Keep the vehicle in a stationary condition on a
level surface for 1 second or more.
(b) Check the output of the yaw rate sensor.
(1) Move the shift lever to the D position, drive the
vehicle at a speed of approximately 3 mph (5
km/h), and turn the steering wheel either to the
left or right 90
or more until the vehicle makes
180
turn.
(2) Stop the vehicle and move the shift lever to the
position. Check that the skid control buzzer
sounds for 3 seconds.
HINT:
• If the skid control buzzer sounds, the signal
check is completed normally.
• If the skid control buzzer does not sound,
check the skid control buzzer circuit, then
perform the signal check again.

FREEZE FRAME DATA
1. FREEZE FRAME DATA
(a) The vehicle (sensor) status, stored during ABS and/
or VSC operation or at the time of an error code
detection, can be displayed by the intelligent tester.
(b) Only one record of freeze frame data is stored and
the freeze frame data generated during ABS and/or
VSC operation are updated whenever the vehicle
status is changed. Also, the number of the ignition
switch is ON after the freeze frame data is stored
can be stored up to 31 and it can be displayed. After
storing the DTC, the freeze frame data is not up-
dated.
HINT:
If the ignition switch "ON" operation exceeds 31
times, "31"appears on the display.
(c) If a malfunction occurs, the freeze frame data is
stored but the ABS actuation data is deleted.
*
1: If no conditions are specifically stated for "Idling",
it means the shift lever is at N or P position, the A/C
switch is OFF and all accessory switches are OFF.
*
2: 2WD only

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
(a) Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Select the DATA LIST mode on the intelligent tester.
ABS / VSC:
(d) Check that there is no difference between the speed
value output from the speed sensor displayed by the
intelligent tester and the speed value displayed on the
speedometer when driving the vehicle.
OK:
There is almost no difference in the displayed
speed value.
HINT:
There is tolerance of +- 10 % in the speedometer
indication.

(a) INSPECTION USING OSCILLOSCOPE:
(1) Connect the oscilloscope to terminals RR+ - RR- or
RL+ - RL- of the skid control ECU.
(2) Drive the vehicle at approximately 19 mph (30 km/
h), and check the signal waveform.
OK:
A waveform as shown in a figure should be
output.
HINT:
• As vehicle speed (wheel revolution speed) in
creases, a cycle of the waveform narrows and
the fluctuation in the output voltage becomes
greater.
• hen noise is identified in the waveform on the
oscilloscope, error signals are generated due to
the speed sensor rotor's scratches, looseness or
foreign matter attached to it.
NOTICE:
When replacing the brake actuator assembly,
perform zero point calibration (See page BC-70).
