3. Hold the rear wheel hub assembly in a vice using wooden blocks.
4. Measure the wheel bearing rotation starting torque by using special tools
MB990326 and MB990685.
Limit: 1.4 N.m (1.03 ft-lb)
5. If the rotation starting torque is not within the limit range when the nut is
tightened to 236 +/- 19 N.m (174 +/- 14 ft-lb), replace the front wheel bearing
assembly. If there is any signs of binding or tight spots when the wheel bearing
turns, replace it.
6. Measure to determine whether the wheel bearing axial play is within the
specified limit or not.
Limit: 0.05 mm (0.002 inch)

2. Insert special tool MB990939 between the differential carrier and the
differential case, and then rotate the companion flange by hand (once in the
normal direction, and then once in the reverse direction) while applying a load
to the drive gear so that the revolution torque [approximately 2.5 - 3.0 N.m
(22.1 - 26.6 i
n-lb)] is applied to the drive pinion.
CAUTION: If the drive gear is rotated too much, the tooth
contact pattern will become unclear and difficult
to check.
