LONG STOPPING DISTANCES ON LOOSE ROAD SURFACESWhen braking on loose surfaces like snow-covered or gravel roads, the stopping
distance can be longer for an ABS-equipped vehicle than the stopping distance for a
vehicle with a conventional brake system. SHOCK AT STARTING CHECK Shock may be felt when the brake pedal is lightly pressed while driving at a low
speed. This is a normal characteristic because the ABS system operation check is
carried out when vehicle speed is 8 km/h (5 mph) or less. ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) DIAGNOSIS INTRODUCTION TO ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS The anti-lock braking system (ABS) operates differently from conventional brake
systems. These differences include sounds, sensations, and vehicle performance that
owners and service technicians who are not familiar with ABS may not be used to.
Some operational characteristics may seem to be malfunctions, but they are simply
signs of normal ABS operation. When diagnosing the ABS system, keep these
operational characteristics in mind. Inform the owner of the kind of performance
characteristics to expect from an ABS-equipped vehicle. ABS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DETECTION CONDITIONS ABS diagnostic trouble codes (ABS DTCs) are set under different conditions,
depending on the malfunction detected. Most ABS DTCs will only be set during
vehicle operation. Some ABS DTCs will also be set during the ABS self-check
immediately after the engine is started.
When you check if an ABS DTC will be displayed again after the DTC has been
erased, you should duplicate the ABS DTC set conditions. Depending on the
detection timing and set conditions for the specific ABS DTC, you must either drive
the vehicle or turn the engine off and restart it. To set the proper conditions for that
DTC again, refer to ABS DTC SET CONDITIONS
for each ABS DTC that you
are trying to reset.

When DTC code C1215 is set: Rear left ABS sensor
Q: Is the ABS sensor damaged?
YES: Replace the ABS sensor. Then go to Step 17 .
NO: It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to
HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS
.
STEP 16. Recheck for diagnostic trouble code.
Check again if the DTC is set.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
2. Erase the DTC.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
5. Check if the DTC is reset.

Q: Is any harness wire damaged?
YES: Repair the harness wire. Then go to Step 13 .
NO: Go to Step 11.
STEP 11. Recheck for diagnostic trouble code after the G-sensor is
replaced.
Replace the G-sensor, and check whether DTC C1381, C1382 or C1383 is
reset.
1. Replace the G-sensor.
2. Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connec
tor. CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991958,
always turn the ignition switch to the
"LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or
disconnecting scan tool MB991958.

Q: Is reception of the strongest radio frequency possible within the area?
YES: There is no action to be taken.
NO: Go to Step 7.
STEP 7. Check the connection of the antenna feeder cable and radio and
CD player.
Q: Is the antenna feeder cable thoroughly connected to the radio and CD
player?
YES: Repair or replace the radio and CD player. The auto-select function
should operate normally.
NO: Thoroughly connect the antenna feeder cable and the radio and CD
player. The auto-select function should operate normally.

3. Confirm that the toe-in is at the standard value.
4. Use a turning radius gauge to check that the steering angle is at the standard
value.
STEERING ANGLE
Standard value:
35°6' +/- 2°00' < Inner wheel>
30+/-00' < Outer wheel (reference)>
5. On vehicles with ASC, if the toe-in is adjusted, always carry out steering wheel
sensor calibration (Refer to STEERING WHEEL SENSOR
CALIBRATION
article).
CAMBER, CASTER AND KINGPIN INCLINATION Required Special Tool:
MB991004: Wheel Alignment Gauge Attachment
Standard value:
Camber: 0° 00' +/- 30' (Left/right deviation within 30')
Caster: 3° 00' +/- 30' (Left/right deviation within 30')
Kingpin inclination: 12° 50' +/- 1° 30'
NOTE: Caster is preset at the factory and cannot be adjusted.
CAUTION: Never subject the wheel bearings to the vehicle load
when the drive shaft nuts are loosened.
NOTE: Attach the camber/caster/kingpin gauge to the drive shaft

4. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the check result satisfactory?
YES:
Replace the A/C-ECU. On completion, check that the DTC is not reset.
NO:
There is an intermittent malfunction such as poor engaged connector(s) or
open circuit (Refer to
HOW TO USE TROUBLESHOOTING/
