to monitor whe ther the driver holds the steering
wheel and initiates an emer gency stop if neces-
sa ry.
If Ac tive Steering Assist is deactivated, the accel-
erator and brake pedal are monitored as well as
th e steering wheel. A warning is issued when the
stee ring wheel is not being held or when a pedal
is not depre ssed, andtheve hicle is in danger of

steered theve hicle for a considerable period of
time or has remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, visual warning 1 is issued. If the driver
still does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/r-
mation tothe system, a warning tone sounds in
addition tothe visual warning message.

Ac tive Emer gency Stop Assist issues thefo llowing

adjacent right-hand lane is carr ied out, if possible.

When automatic braking is initiated, Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is deactivated. Depend-
ing on the countr y,the hazard warning light sys-
te m is switched on.
When theve hicle is stationar y,thefo llowing

Ac tive Lane Change Assist supports the driver
when changing lanes and is activated byindicat-
ing brie0y.
Ac tive Lane Change Assist is only an aid and not a
substitute foryo ur attention. It is essential that
yo u obser vethe no tes on driving systems and
yo ur responsibility in theve hicle Owner's Manual;
yo u may otherwise failto recognise dangers.
The following conditions must be ful/lled for a
lane change:
R You are on a mo torw ay or high-speed major
ro ad. R
The vehicle speed is between appr oximately
80 km/h and 180 km/h.
R The neighbouring lane is separated bya bro-
ke n lane ma rking.
R Novehicle or obs tacle is de tected in the adja-
cent lane.
R Since the last time theve hicle was star ted,
th e sensors ha vedetected a vehicle at a suita-
ble dis tance behind your vehicle.
R Active Lane Change Assist is selected in the
multimedia system.
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active
St eering Assist are activated on mo torw ays.
The system is not available and must be reactiva-
te d in thefo llowing situations:
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active
