tive Emer gency Stop Assist uses touch sensors
to monitor whe ther the driver holds the steering
wheel and initiates an emer gency stop if neces-
sa ry.
If Ac tive Steering Assist is deactivated, the accel-
erator and brake pedal are monitored as well as
th e steering wheel. A warning is issued when the
stee ring wheel is not being held or when a pedal
is not depre ssed, andtheve hicle is in danger of
leaving the lane. 286

If
th e system de tects that the driver has not
steered theve hicle for a considerable period of
time or has remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, visual warning 1 is issued. If the driver
still does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/r-
mation tothe system, a warning tone sounds in
addition tothe visual warning message.
Also obser vethe inst ructions on the contact
de tection of Active Steering Assist (/ page 284).
Ac tive Emer gency Stop Assist issues thefo llowing
wa rnings in order:
R Display message 1appears in the driver's
displa y. R
In addition todisplay 1awa rning tone
sounds.
R The Beginning emergency stop message
appears in the driver's displa y,a continuous
wa rning tone sounds, theve hicle no lon ger
accelerates, and there is a slight, repeated
te nsioning of the seat belt.
R The vehicle speed is reduced in increments
until it is at a standstill. Sharp brake impulses
are also produced.
Depending on the countr y,a lane change tothe
adjacent right-hand lane is carr ied out, if possible.
% It is only possible tochange across one lane
and only into theright-hand lane, and not
onto the hard shoulder.
When automatic braking is initiated, Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is deactivated. Depend-
ing on the countr y,the hazard warning light sys-
te m is switched on.
When theve hicle is stationar y,thefo llowing
actions are car ried out:
R The vehicle is secured with the electric par k-
ing brake. R
The vehicle is unloc ked.
R If possible, an emer gency call is placed tothe
Mercedes-Benz emerg ency call centre.
Before automatic braking is initiated, you can can-
cel Active Emer gency Stop Assist bystee ring.
Yo u can cancel the inter vention byActive Emer-
ge ncy Stop Assist aTer automatic braking is initi-
ated byone of thefo llowing actions:
R Accelerating or braking: the emer gency stop is
cancelled, but thewa rning message ,wa rning
to ne and po wer steering remain active
R Steering: po wer-assis ted steering is cancelled,
th ewa rning message andwarning tone remain
active and theve hicle continues tobe braked
% Active Emer gency Stop Assist can initiate an
emer gency stop a maximum of thre e times
within one driving cycle. Subsequentl y,Ac tive
St eering Assist and Active Emer gency Stop
Assist are deactivated forth at driving cycle.

Ac tive Lane Change Assist supports the driver
when changing lanes and is activated byindicat-
ing brie0y.
Ac tive Lane Change Assist is only an aid and not a
substitute foryo ur attention. It is essential that
yo u obser vethe no tes on driving systems and
yo ur responsibility in theve hicle Owner's Manual;
yo u may otherwise failto recognise dangers.
The following conditions must be ful/lled for a
lane change:
R You are on a mo torw ay or high-speed major
ro ad. R
The vehicle speed is between appr oximately
80 km/h and 180 km/h.
R The neighbouring lane is separated bya bro-
ke n lane ma rking.
R Novehicle or obs tacle is de tected in the adja-
cent lane.
R Since the last time theve hicle was star ted,
th e sensors ha vedetected a vehicle at a suita-
ble dis tance behind your vehicle.
R Active Lane Change Assist is selected in the
multimedia system.
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active
St eering Assist are activated on mo torw ays.
The system is not available and must be reactiva-
te d in thefo llowing situations:
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active
St eering Assist werealready activated before
entering the mo torw ay.
R The system brie0y does not de tect thero ad
yo u are on as a mo torw ay or a mo torw ay-like
road, e.g. on a mo torw ay junction. As soon as
Active Lane Change Assist de tects a
suitable road, you can reactivate it with J,

Active Lane Change Assist is available, the
± display appears along with green ar rows in
th e driver displa y.Ifth e system has been activa-
te d but is not cur rently available, the± display
appears along with grey arro ws inthe driver dis-
pla y.
If no vehicle or obs tacle is de tected in the adja-
cent lane and a lane change is permitted, the lane
ch ange begins aTer the driver has indicated
brie0y. The lane change is shown tothe driver
with a 0ashing green ar row next tothe±
steering wheel symbol. Green ar row 1 is dis-
pla yed in the appropriate adjacent lane in the
Assistance menu inthe driver displa y.The Lane
change to the left message,fo rex ample, also
appears.
Ac tive Lane Change Assist can be cancelled in
va rious situations, including thefo llowing:
R Change in the sur rounding conditions (e.g.
de tected obs tacle).
R The driver remo vesth eir hands from the steer-
ing wheel.
R The driver steers with too much forc e or in the
opposite direction. R
The driver mo vesth e turn signal indicator in
th e opposite direction.
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC or Active
St eering Assist is deactivated.
R The vehicle cann otmake the lane change as
planned.
Cancellation of Active Lane Change Assist is dis-

R The sensors are damaged, co vered or dirty.
R No, or se veral, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, or the markings change
qu ickl y,forex ample, in a construction area or
junctions.
R The system does not de tect a suitable road,
fo rex ample, in tight bends or shortly aTer a
slip road.

ta nce warning lamp lights up. In
theAssistance menu, an insu1cient distance

application.
If yo u apply the brake yourself in a critical situa-
tion or apply the brake during autonomous brak-
ing, situation-dependent braking assistance
occurs. The brake pressure increases up tomaxi-
