The lig ht illu minates when t he igni tion is sw it c h­

If the brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine i s cranking , there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this

system inspected .
- Always keep in m ind that after several brake
applications, you will need greater pressure
on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle . Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopping power in c ritical situa­
tions . You must allow for increased bra king
distances. The extra dis tance used up by
f ading b rakes cou ld lead to an accident.
~.IC® ) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the ele c­
trome chanical parking brake.
If the i ndicator lig ht . (USA models)/ . (Cana­
da models) turns o n, the parking b rake was set .
The warning/indica tor light will go out when the
parking brake is re leased .
• (USA models) ;a (Canada models ) Cau­
tion : Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator lig ht blinks and the message ap­
pea rs, there is not enough brak ing power to keep
the vehicle from roll ing. The brakes have over­
heated. The vehicle cou ld roll away even on a
small incline.
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To rele ase t he parking bra ke, press t he bra ke ped­
a l and press the button<® or start driving with
starti ng assist at the same time¢
page 78.
Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manua lly, press the
b rake peda l and press the button (®) at the same
time. The park ing brake only r eleases automat i­
cally if the dr iver's safety be lt is fas tened.
Ill Parking brake!
If the l'IJ indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage appears, there is a parking brake malfunc­
tion . Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or
qua lified workshop immed iately to have the mal ­
f u nction co rrected .

This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . warn ing/ indicator light illum inates when
the igni tio n is swi tched on to remind the driver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to put on the safety belt . Addit ionally, an acoust ic
warning (gong) w ill also sound.

you sw itch on the ign it ion and m ust go out after
the engine has sta rted .
• Alternator fault : Battery is not b eing charg­
ed
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, there is a malfunct io n in the generator
o r vehicle electr ica l system .
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer or quali fied
workshop immediately. Because the vehicle bat­
tery is discharging, turn off a ll unnecessary elec­
trical eq uipment such as the radio . Seek profes­
s iona l assistance if the battery cha rge leve l is too
l ow .
(•) Low battery: Battery w ill b e charged while
driving
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, there may be limited starting ab ility.
If this message t urns off after a little while, the
battery charged enough while dr iv ing .
If the message does not turn off, have yo ur au­
thorized Audi dea ler or qualified workshop cor ­
rect the malfunction .

9:::1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engin e! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light t urns on and the message
appears, the oil pressure is too low.
• Pull
off the road.
• Stop the vehicle .
• Turnoff the engine.
• Check the engine oil level ¢ page 199.
• If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
¢ page 199. Make sure that the o il pressure
warning symbol. appears no longe r in the
display before you start dr iving again.
• If the engi ne oil leve l is correct a nd the ind ica­
tor light st ill turns on, turn the eng ine
off and
do not continue driving . Seek p rofess ional as ­
s istance .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, prefe rably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with ­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil leve l warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off eng ine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high o r
the coo lant leve l is too low.
• Pull

• Stop the vehicle.
• Tur noff the engine .
• Check coolant leve l¢

• Continue dr iv ing o nly after the engine coolant

If the b1 ind icator light blinks while driving , the
E SC or ASR (A nti-Slip Regulat ion) is actively regu­
l ati ng .
If the
b1 ind icator light turns on, the system has
swit ched the ESC off . In this case, yo u can switch
t h e ign ition off and t hen on to sw itch the ESC on
again. The indica tor ligh t turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.
If the . indicator light tu rns on, ESC was re­
stri cted or sw itched off using the

A WARNING
If th e 11111 (USA models) JII (Canada mod­
e ls) brake syste m indic ator ligh t turn s on to ­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulat ing f unction may have
failed. Functions that stabilize the vehicle a re
no longer availab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully t o the nea rest authorized Audi
dealer and have the malfunction cor rected.

ABS/(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differ ential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fJ]l (USA models)/
ti] (Ca nada models) w ill come on for a few sec­
onds when the ig nition is switched on. The light
w ill go out afte r an automatic check sequence is
comp leted.
The re is a malfunction in the ABS when :
-The warning/indicator lig ht does not illuminate
when you switch the ig nition on .
- The warning/indicator lig ht does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator lig ht ill uminates wh ile
driv ing .
The ESC indicator light a lso ill uminates if the re is
a ma lf u nction in the ABS . The message
Stabiliza­
tion cont rol (ESC ): Fault! See owner 's manual
also appears in the instrument cluste r display
and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as poss ible to re­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the b rake wa rning light ¢ page 15 and the ABS
warn ing illuminate
together there may be a mal­
function in the ABS, and there may also be a ma l­
function in the brake system itself ¢ ,& .
The ABS
will not work and you will notice a change in braking respons e and performance.
In the event of a malfunct ion in the b rake sys­
tem

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The ED L works toget her with the ABS . The ABS
war ning light w ill come on if there is a malfunc­
tion in the EDL system

- If the fJ]l (USA mode ls)/ tl] (Canada mod­
els) war ning light does not go out, o r if it
comes on while dr iv ing, the ABS syst em is
not working prope rly . The vehi cle can t hen
be s topped o nly with the s tandard bra kes
(without A BS) . Yo u will no t have the pro tec­
tion A BS provides. Contac t your a uthorized
Aud i dea le r as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light and
the
fJ]l warn ing ligh t come on togethe r, the
rea r whee ls co uld loc k up first under hard
brak ing. Rear whee l lock-up can ca use loss
of vehicle control and an accident. Have your
veh icle repa ired immediately by your au­
thorized A udi dealer or qualified workshop.
Drive s low ly and avoid sudde n, hard bra ke
ap pli cations .
-Canada models : If the brake warning light

The fl (USA models) ;fll (Canada models) indi­
cator lig ht monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir­
bags, pretensioners) and illuminates fo r a few
seco nds each t ime you swi tc h the ignition on .

If the II (USA models)/E,I (Canada mode ls) in­
dicator light does not go out, or if it ill uminates
wh ile you a re d riving, or if it starts to blink, then
t h ere is a ma lf u nction somewhere in the system.
If th e light does not illum inate when you sw itch
t h e igni tion on, t his a lso means there is a ma l­
f unc tion.
A WARNING ~
If yo u have a ma lfun ction in t he safety sys-
tems, contact you r authorized Audi dea le r i m­
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not wor k properly in an accident.

while you are dr iv ing, then the re is a malfunc­
tion in the eng ine electronics. Have the mal­
function corrected as soon as possible by your
author ized A udi dealer or a qualified re pair fa ­
cility.
0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunc tion Ind ica tor Lamp (M IL) is part o f
the On-Board Diagnos tic (O BD II ) system . The
symbo l
('4 lights up when the ignition is switch ­
e d on and wi ll turn off afte r the engine has start ­
e d an d has sett le d at a constant i dle speed . This
indicates that the MIL is working p roperly.

If the r.:J indicator light turns on, a bulb has
failed. The message indicates the location of the
bulb.
- If the Im indicator light also turns on, then a
fog light has failed. The position of the indica­
tor light corresponds with the location on the
vehicle.
- If the II indicator light also turns on, then a
rear fog* light has failed. The position of the in­
dicator light corresponds with the location on
the vehicle.
This warning can also occur if the light switch is
in an unengaged position between two symbols.
Vehicle lights: System fault!
If the message appears, there is a malfunction in
the headlights or light switch.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immediately
to have the malfunction corrected.

A WARNING
-Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode while they are being changed causing
serious personal injury.

voltage section of gas discharge (xenon)

light range control is no longer working properly.
Have the system checked and repaired at your au­
thorized Audi dealer.

Applies to vehicles: with adaptive ligh t
rlJ Audi adaptive light: defective
If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the adaptive
light system. The headlights still function.
Go to an authorized dealership to have the head ­
lights or the control unit for the adaptive light re­
paired.
@. o Light /rain sen sor
Applies to vehicles: with light/ra in sensor
II Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers
defective
If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, the light/rain sensor is not functioning
correctly.
For safety reasons the low beams are turned on
permanently with the switch in
AUTO . However, Ii),,

ing the light switch . You can still control a ll func­
tions that are independent of the rain sensor
through the windshield wiper lever .

If the B symbol in the display comes on, there is

tial

Sport differential: Overheating
The transmission tempe ratu re has increased sig­
n ifican tly due to the sporty dr iv ing manner. D rive
in a less sporty manner unti l the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicato r light
switches of.
A WARNING
Contact yo ur authorized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied workshop if the sport differential is faulty
or ma lfunctioning. The repa ir must be per­
formed by trained personnel using the co rrect
oil in orde r to ensure safety .
