To lock or unlock the door with the keyTurn the key toward the front of the vehicle to lock the door.
After checking that the door is locked, turn the key back to the
center and remove it.
WA R N I N G
!Make sure all doors are tightly closed and locked
while driving.
• Locked doors, in combination with the use of seat
belts, can help reduce the risk of ejection in an
accident.
• Locked doors can help keep passengers, especially
small children, from opening doors and falling out
of moving vehicles.
• Locked doors can help prevent outsiders from
gaining access to your vehicle when you slow down
or come to a stop.
Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it. Children
who get into unlocked vehicles may not be able to
get out. Children trapped inside vehicles can quickly
be overcome by heat and suffer serious injury or
death due to heat stroke.Never leave children unattended inside a vehicle. In
addition to the risk of heat stroke, children can acti-
vate switches and controls, resulting in an injury or
fatal accident.

To lock or unlock the door from the inside Move the lock knob to the lock position to lock the door.
All doors should be kept locked while driving.
The driver’s door can be unlocked without using the lock knob
by pulling on the inside door handle.
To lock the door without using the key 1. Move the inside lock knob to the locked position.
2. Be sure the keys are not inside the vehicle. Close the door. Key reminder buzzer

If you open the driver’s door while the key is in the “LOCK” or
“ACC” position, a tone will sound, reminding you to remove

position.

NOTEWhen locking or unlocking with the key on the driver’s
door, only the driver’s door will lock or unlock.
Repeated continuous operation between lock and unlock
could activate the power door locking systems built-in
protection circuit and prevent the system’s from operat-
ing. If this occurs, wait about 1 minute before operating
the power door lock switch.

operating the power door lock switch on the driver’s or the pas-

To unlock the doors and liftgate

Using the selector lever positionAll doors and the liftgate will unlock when the selector lever is
moved to the “P” (PARK) position with the electric motor
switch in the “ON” position.
Child safety locks for rear door

Child safety locks help prevent rear passengers, especially chil-
dren, from opening the rear door using the inside door handle.
A lock lever for the child safety lock is provided on each rear
door.
When the lever is in the lock position (1), the rear door cannot
be opened using the inside door handle.
To open the rear door when the child safety lock lever is in the
lock position, pull the outside door handle.
When the lever is in the release position (2), the child safety
lock is released and the rear door can be opened using the
inside door handle.
You can select the functions to unlock the doors and liftgate
either using the electric motor switch position or using the selec-
tor lever position.
These functions are not activated when the vehicle is shipped
from the factory. To activate or deactivate these functions, please
contact a certified i-MiEV dealer.

To openAfter unlocking the liftgate, push the switch (A) and pull up the
liftgate.
WA R N I N G
!Always keep the doors tightly closed and locked
when driving. An unlocked door may be acciden-
tally opened by a passenger, especially by a child
who could fall out. Also, if the doors are not locked,
there is a greater risk of someone being thrown from
the vehicle in an accident.
WA R N I N G
!When opening and closing the liftgate, make sure
that there are no people nearby and be careful not to
hit your head or pinch your hands, neck, etc.

NOTEIf you do not open the liftgate immediately after pulling
the handle, the liftgate can not be lifted. If this happens,
pull the handle again and lift the liftgate.
The liftgate cannot be opened when the battery is flat or
disconnected.To closePull the liftgate grip (A) downward as illustrated. Gently push
the upper gate from the outside with enough force so that it is
completely closed. Always ensure the liftgate is securely
closed.
NOTEGas struts (B) are installed to support the liftgate.
To prevent damage or faulty operation.
• Do not hold the gas struts when closing the liftgate.
• Also, do not push or pull on the gas struts.
• Do not attach any plastic material, tape, etc., to the gas
struts.
• Do not tie anything, etc., around the gas struts.
• Do not hang any objects on the gas struts.
CAUTION
!To avoid injuring your hand or arm, do not attempt
to close the liftgate the gate grip (A).
Before starting the vehicle, be sure to confirm that
the liftgate is locked. If the liftgate opens while driv-
ing the vehicle, objects stored in the luggage com-
partment could fall out into the road.When closing the liftgate, always ensure that every-
body removes their hands and fingers from the
liftgate opening.

3Theft-alarm system

The theft-alarm system is designed to provide protection from
unauthorized entry into the vehicle. This system is operated in
three stages: the first is the “armed” stage, the second is the
“alarm” stage, and third is the “disarmed” stage. If triggered,
the system provides both audible and visual alarm signals.
CAUTION
!Do not modify or add parts to the theft-alarm sys-
tem. Doing so could cause the theft-alarm to mal-
function.

Armed stagePark the vehicle and stop the electric motor unit. Arm the sys-
tem as described below.
1. Remove the key from the electric motor switch.
2. Lock all doors and the liftgate by using the keyless entry
system.At this time, the theft-alarm indicator (A) in the meter
cluster flashes for confirmation.
3. The system has entered the armed stage after about 20
seconds, when the theft-alarm indicator flashing becomes
slower.
The theft-alarm indicator continues to flash while the sys-
tem is in the armed stage.Arm the system and leave
