removing the key, first set the
selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then turn the key to the “LOCK” position, and remove it.Vehicles with A/T
CAUTION
!●
Do not remove the ignition key from the ignition switch while driving.
The steering wheel will be
locked, causing loss of control.
●
If the engine is stopped wh
ile driving, the brake ser-
vomechanism will cease to function and brakingefficiency will deteriorat
e. Also, the power steering
system will not function and it will require greater manual effort to op
erate the steering.
●
Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long time when the engine is not running, doing so will cause the battery to be discharged.
●
Do not turn the key to the “START” position when the engine is running, doing so could damage thestarter motor.

Tips for starting●
Do not continuously operate the starter motor longer than 10 seconds; doing so could run down the battery. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition switch back to“LOCK” position, wait a few seconds, and then try again. Trying repeatedly with the starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism.
CAUTION
!●
Remove the key when leaving the vehicle. In some countries, it is pr
ohibited to leave the key on
the vehicle when parked.
WARNING
!●
Never run the engine in a cl
osed or poorly ventilated
area any longer than is needed to move your vehiclein or out of the area. Carbon monoxide gases are odourless and can be fatal.CAUTION
!●
Never attempt to start the engine by pushing or pull- ing the vehicle.
●
Do not run the engine at hi
gh rpm or drive the vehi-
cle at high speed until th
e engine has had chance to
warm up.
●
Release the ignition key as
soon as the engine starts
to avoid damaging the starter motor.
●
If your vehicle is equipp
ed with a turbocharger, do
not stop the engine immedi
ately after high-speed or
uphill driving. First allow the engine to idle to give the turbocharger a chance to cool down.

etrol-powered vehicles)
E00601701297
Normal conditionsThe starting procedure is as follows: 1. Insert the ignition key and fasten the seat belt. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.3. Depress and hold the brake pedal. 4. Make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) posi-
tion.
5. After turning the ignition key to the “ON” position, make
certain that all warning lamps are functioning properly before starting the engine.
6. Turn the ignition key to the “START” position without
depressing the accelerator pedal, and release it when the engine starts.
NOTE●
A ticking noise may be hear
d after starting the engine.
This is not an abnormal co
ndition. The noise will disap-
pear after a short time of engine running. If the ticking noise continues after the engine is warmedup, we recommend you to have your vehicle checked.

At extreme cold ambient temperatureIf the engine won’t start, de
press the accelerator pedal about
halfway while cranking the engi
ne. Once the engine starts,
release the accelerator pedal.Flooded engineIf the engine was flooded during starting, first operate the starter for 5 to 6 seconds whil
e fully depressing the accelerator
pedal, then start the engine
without depressing the accelerator
pedal.Using the MIVEC engineThe MIVEC engine automatically switches its intake-valve control between a low-speed mo
de and a high-speed mode in
accordance with driving conditi
ons for maximum engine per-
formance.NOTE●
To protect the engine, the high-speed mode may not be selected while the engine coolant temperature is low. In such a case, the engine revo
lutions do not rise to over
5,000 rpm even if the acceler
ator pedal is depressed.

1. Insert the ignition key and fasten the seat belt. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Depress and hold the brake pedal. 4. Fully depress the clutch pedal (M/T).5. On vehicles with M/T, place
the gearshift lever in the “N”
(Neutral) position. On vehicles with A/T, make sure the selector lever is inthe “P” (PARK) position.
6. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position.
The diesel preheat indication lamp will first illuminate, and then after a short time go
out, indicating that preheat-
ing is completed.
CAUTION
!●
When starting the engine, make sure that you press on the brake pedal. At extreme cold ambient tem- perature move your foot
to the brake pedal immedi-
ately after the en
gine has started.

NOTE●
If the engine is cold, the di
esel preheat indication lamp is
on for a longer time.
●
When the engine has not been
started within about 5 sec-
onds after the diesel preheat
indication lamp went out,
return the ignition key to the “LOCK” position. Then, turn the key to the “ON” position to preheat the engine again.
●
When the engine is warm, th
e diesel preheat indication
lamp does not come on even
if the ignition key is placed
in the “ON” position. Start the engine by turning the ignition key right to the“START” position.
7. Turn the ignition key to the “START” position without
depressing the acceler
ator pedal, and release it when the
engine starts.
Fuel injection amount learning process (diesel- powered vehicles)
E00616000044
To keep exhaust emissions and engine noise low, the engine very occasionally performs a
learning process for the fuel
injection amount. The engine sounds slightly di
fferent from usual while the
learning process is taking pl
ace. The change in the engine
sound does not indicate a fault.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)
*
E00619800027
The diesel particulate filter
(DPF) is a device that captures
most of the particulate matter
(PM) in the exhaust emissions of
the diesel engine. The DPF auto
matically burns away trapped
PM during vehicle operation. Under certain driving conditions, however, the DPF is not able to burn away all of the trapped PM and, as a result, an exces
sive amount of PM accumulates
inside it.NOTE●
To minimize the likelihood
of excessive accumulation of
PM, try to avoid driving for long periods at low speeds and repeatedly driv
ing short distances.
DPF warning lampThe DPF warning lamp comes on or
flashes in the event of an
abnormality in the DPF system
. Provided the DPF system is
working normally, the DPF warning lamp comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position and goes off a few seconds later.
WARNING
!●
The DPF reaches very high temperatures. Do not park your vehicle in areas where combustible mate- rials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust system since a fire could occur.CAUTION
!●
Do not use any type of fuel or engine oil that is not specified for your vehicle.
Also, do not use any mois-
ture-removing agent or other fuel additive. Such substances could have a de
trimental effect on the
DPF. Refer to “Fuel selection” on page 2 and “Engine oil” on page 8-6.

If the DPF warning lamp
comes on during vehicle
operationSteady illumination of the DPF warning lamp shows that the DPF has not been able to burn away all of the trapped PM and that, as a result, an excessive amount of PM has accumulatedinside it. To enable the DPF to burn away the PM, try to drive the vehicle as follows: ●
With the needle of the water temperature gauge stabilized in roughly the middle of the scale, drive for about 20 min- utes at a speed of at least 40 km/h (25 mph).
If the DPF warning lamp subsequently stays on, contact yourMITSUBISHI MOTORS Auth
orized Service Point.
If the DPF warning lamp flashes during vehicle operationFlashing of the DPF warning lamp
indicates an abnormality in
the DPF system. Have the syst
em inspected by a MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point.
Manual transmission
E00602000072
The shift pattern is shown on the gearshift lever knob. Be sure to always fully depress the clutch pedal before attempting to shift the lever.
CAUTION
!●
You do not have to cont
inuously drive exactly as
indicated above. Always strive to drive safely in accordance with
road conditions.
CAUTION
!●
Continuing to drive wi
th the DPF warning lamp
flashing could result in engine trouble and DPFdamage.
CAUTION
!●
Do not move the gearshif
t lever into reverse while
the vehicle is moving forward; doing so will damage the transmission.
●
Do not rest your foot on
the clutch pedal while driv-
ing as this will cause premature clutch wear or dam- age.

NOTE●
If it is hard to shift into 1st, depress the clutch pedal again; the shift will then be easier to make.
●
To shift into reverse from the 5th gear, move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position, and then shift it into reverse.
Possible driving speed
E00610800574
Avoid shifting down at high speed, as this may cause excessive engine speed (the tachometer
needle into the red zone) and
damage the engine. 5th gear is an overdrive ratio and its use reduces engine speed below that of the 4th gear. Us
e 5th gear whenever vehicle
speed allows, for maximum fuel economy.
●
If the clutch is engaged
suddenly while the engine
revolution is high, an ex
tremely large load will be
applied instantaneously to the power train, possiblyleading to the breakage of that component. Please ensure, therefore, that the clutch pedal is always applied in a slow yet firm manner.Your vehicle has a special feature to protect the power train from damage; th
e engine is controlled in
such a way that excessive in
crease in engine revolu-
tion is prevented in situ
ations where the accelerator
pedal is depressed while the gearshift lever is in the 1st position and the clutch pedal has been depressed.CAUTION
