Driving on dry paved road and highwaySelect the “2H” or “4H” position to drive on the dry paved road. Especially on dry highway
, never select the “4HLc” or
“4LLc” position.
Driving on snowy or icy roads Set the transfer shift lever to
the “4H” or “4HLc” position in
accordance with the road conditions, and then graduallydepress the accelerator pe
dal for a smooth start.
NOTE●
The use of snow tyres and/or tyre chains is recommended.
●
In order to ensure that the
anti-lock brake
system (ABS)
will operate correctly in situ
ations where tyre chains have
been fitted, drive in the “4
H”, “4HLc” or “4LLc” position.
●
Maintain a safe distance between vehicles, avoid sudden braking, and use engine braking (downshifting).
Driving on sandy or muddy roadsSet the transfer shift lever to the “4HLc” or “4LLc” positionand then gradually depress th
e accelerator pedal for a smooth
start. Keep the pressure on th
e accelerator pedal as constant as
possible, and drive at low speed.
CAUTION
!●
Selecting the “4HLc” or “4LLc” position to drive on dry paved road will increase the fuel consumption with possible noise genera
tion and early tyre wear.
It may also increase the di
fferential oil temperature,
resulting in possible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive train wi
ll be subjected to excessive
loading, possibly leading
to oil leakage, component
seizure, or other serious faults.
CAUTION
!●
Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration, and sharp turning; such opera
tions could cause skidding
and spinouts.

Brake pads●
Avoid hard braking situations. New brakes need to be broken-in by moderate use for thefirst 200 km (125 miles).
●
The disc brakes are provided with a warning device which emits a shrieking metallic sound while braking if thebrake pads have reached their wear limit. If you hear this sound, have the brake pads replaced immediately.
Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
E00607100850
Environmental conditions can ha
ve an effect on braking. Dur-
ing sudden braking when there is
snow, ice, oil, water etc. on
the road surface, a skid may occu
r. In this situation, steering
control and braking effectivenes
s is reduced and the stopping
distance is increased. The vehicl
e may also go into an uncon-
trolled spin. The ABS helps prevent the wheel
s from locking during brak-
ing, thus maintaining directional stability, ensuring controlla- bility and providing optimum braking force.Driving hints●
Always maintain the same di
stance from the vehicle in
front of you as you would for a vehicle not equipped with ABS. Compared with vehicles not fitted with ABS, your vehiclemay require a longer stopping distance in the following cases: • Driving on gravel or snow-covered roads.• Driving with tyre chains installed. • Driving on roads where the
road surface is pitted or has
other differences in surface height.• Driving on bumpy roads or
other poor dr
iving surfaces.
●
In order to ensure the anti
-lock brake system (ABS) will
operate correctly in situations
where tyre chains have been
fitted, drive in the “4H”,
“4HLc”, or “4LLc” position.
WARNING
!●
Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.

For information on how to chan
ge the detection areas, please
refer to “Changing the detection areas” on page 4-83.
NOTE●
The buzzer may sound lower
than the normal warning
sound when the corner sensor
system is receiving ultra-
sonic noise from other sources, but this is not a malfunc- tion. The buzzer will stop sounding and the system willreturn to normal operation after the noise is no longer received.
CAUTION
!●
The reversing sensor system may not operate prop- erly under the following conditions:• The sensors or surroundings are covered with ice, snow, or mud.• The sensors are frozen.• The system receives ultrasonic noise from othersources (the horns of ot
her vehicles, motorcycle
engines, brakes, radios,
pouring rain, splashing
water, tyre chains, etc.).• The sensors are extremely hot or cold (while the vehicle is parked for a lo
ng period of time under a
blazing sun or in cold weather).• The vehicle tilts significantly.• The vehicle is driven on a rough road (with abumpy, gravel, hilly, or grassy surface).• The vehicle is too close to an obstacle.• The sensors or surroundings have been wiped byhand, or stickers or accessories have been attached.
●
The reversing sensor system may not properly detect the following:• Objects that are thin, such as wire nets or ropes.• Objects that absorb sound waves, such as snow.• Objects that are shaped
with a sharp angle.
• Objects with a smooth su
rface, such as glass.
• Objects that are low, such as kerbstones.

Operation under adve
rse driving conditions
E00801701547
On a flooded road●
Avoid flooded roads. Water could enter the brake discs, resulting in temporarily ineff
ective brakes. In such cases,
lightly depress the brake pedal
to see if the brakes operate
properly. If they do not, li
ghtly depress the pedal several
times while driving in order to dry the brake pads.
●
When driving in rain or on a road with many puddles a layer of water may form between the tyres and the road surface. This reduces a tyre’s fricti
onal resistance on the road,
resulting in loss of steering stability and braking capabil- ity. To cope with this, observe the following items:
On a snow-covered or frozen road ●
When driving on a snow-covered or frozen road, it is rec- ommended that you use snow tyres or tyre chains. Refer to the “Snow tyres” and “Tyre chains” sections.
●
Avoid high-speed operation,
sudden acceleration, abrupt
brake application and sharp cornering.
●
Depressing the brake pedal during travel on snowy or icy roads may cause tyre slippage and skidding. When trac- tion between the tyres and the
road is reduced the wheels
may skid and the vehicle canno
t readily be brought to a
stop by conventional braking techniques. Braking will dif- fer, depending upon whether you have anti-lock brakes(ABS). As your vehicle is equipped with ABS, brake by pressing the brake pedal hard, and keeping it pressed.
●
Allow extra distance between y
our vehicle and the vehicle
in front of you, and avoid sudden braking.
On a bumpy or rutted road Drive as slow as possible when driving on bumpy or rutted roads.
(a) Drive your vehicle at slow speed. (b) Do not drive on worn tyres. (c) Always maintain the spec
ified tyre inflation pres-
sures.
CAUTION
!●
The impact on tyres and/
or wheels when driving on
a bumpy or rutted road ca
n damage the tyre and/or
wheel.

Tyre chains
E01002101143
On 4WD vehicles in which the driving power is distributed preferentially to
the rear wheels, ensure th
at the tyre chains are
fitted on the rear in acco
rdance with the manufacturer’s
instructions.Use only tyre chains which are
designed for use with the tyres
mounted on the vehicle: use of the incorrect size or type of chain could result in damage to the vehicle body. Before fitting tyre chains, we recommend you to consult a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point. The max. chain height is as follows. The speed limit for tyre chain is 50 km/h (31 mph) and remove the tyre chains as soon as possible on snow free roads.

CAUTION
!●
As your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brake sys- tem (ABS), in order to ensure that the anti-lockbrake system (ABS) will op
erate correctly in situa-
tions where tyre chains h
ave been fitted, drive in
“4H”, “4HLc” or “4LLc”.
●
Practice fitting the chains
before you need them.
Don’t expect help from ot
her people in the cold.
●
Choose a clear straight
stretch of road where you
can pull over and still be seen while you are fitting the chains.
●
Do not fit chains before you need them. This will wear out your tyres and the road surface.
●
After driving around 100-300 metres, stop and retighten the chains.
●
Drive carefully and do no
t exceed 50 km/h (31 mph).
Remember, fitting chains is not going to stop acci-dents from happening.
●
When tyre chains are instal
led, take care that they
do not damage the disc wheel or body.
●
An aluminium wheel can be damaged by a tyre chain while driving. When
fitting a tyre chain on an
aluminium wheel, take care that any part of thechain and fitting cannot be brought into contact with the wheel.
●
When installing or removing the tyre chains, take care that hands and other parts of your body are not injured by the sharp edges of the vehicle body.
