Automatic transmissi
on INVECS-II Sports
Mode 5A/T (Intellige
nt & Innovative Vehi-
cle Electronic Control System II)
E00603200101
Designed for optimum control and equipped with adaptive con- trol capabilities, the electronica
lly controlled transmission opti-
mally matches gear shifts to almost all driving and roadconditions.NOTE●
During running-in period or immediately after reconnec- tion of the battery cable, there may be a case where gear shifts are not made smoothly. This does not indicate afaulty transmission. Gear shifts will become smoot
h after the transmission has
been shifted several times by
the electronic control sys-
tem.
Selector lever operation
E00603300522
The transmission has 5 forwar
d gears and 1 reverse gear.
The individual gears are select
ed automatically, depending on
the position of the gear
selector lever, the speed of the vehicle
and the position of the accelerator pedal. The selector lever has 2 gates; the main gate (1) and the manual gate (2).
CAUTION
!●
This system is strictly in
tended to provide supple-
mentary functions. When travelling downhill under certain conditions or immedi
ately after st
arting off
when the automatic transmission is cold, no auto-matic shiftdown may be made. The driver should shiftdown to a lower gear to use engine braking. Try to drive safely at all time.

“P” PARKThis position locks the transmis
sion to prevent the vehicle
from moving. The engine can be started in this position.“R” REVERSEThis position is to back up.
“N” NEUTRALAt this position the transmission is disengaged. It is the same as the neutral position on a M/T, and should only be used when the vehicle is stationary for an extended length of time during driving, such as in a traffic jam.“D” DRIVEThis position is for normal driving. The transmission automati- cally selects a suitable gear
for your speed and acceleration.
Engine braking is automatical
ly applied when necessary,
depending on road conditions.
CAUTION
!●
Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while
the vehicle is in motion
to avoid a transmission damage.
WARNING
!●
Never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEU- TRAL) position while driv
ing. A serious accident
could occur since you coul
d accidentally move the
lever into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) posi- tion or you will lose engine braking.
●
On a gradient the engine should be started in the “P” (PARK) position, not in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
●
Always keep your right
foot on the brake pedal
when shifting into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL), to minimize the risk of loss of control.CAUTION
!●
Never shift into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion to avoid transmission damage.

Sports mode
E00603900892
Whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion, sports mode is selected by gently pushing the selector lever from the “D” (DRIVE) position into the manual gate (A). To return to “D” range operation, gently push the selector lever back into themain gate (B). In sports mode, gear shifts can be made rapidly simply by mov- ing the selector lever backward
and forward. In contrast to a
manual transmission, the sports
mode allows gear shifts with
the accelerator pedal depressed. + (SHIFT UP) Push the lever forward on
ce to shift up one gear.
— (SHIFT DOWN) Pull the lever backward once to shift down one gear.
SHIFT UP
SHIFT DOWN
CAUTION
!●
In sports mode, the driver must execute upward shifts in accordance with
prevailing road conditions,
taking care to keep the
engine speed below the red
zone.
●
By rapidly moving the
selector lever backward
(SHIFT DOWN) twice, it is possible to skip one gear, i.e., 3rd to 1st, 4th to 2nd or 5th to 3rd. Since sudden engine braking and/or ra
pid acceleration can cause
a loss of traction, however,
downshifts must be made
carefully in accordance
with the vehicle’s speed.

NOTE●
On petrol-powered vehicles, the upward shift may be made automatically in sports mode when the engine revo- lutions rises and approaches
the tachometer’s red zone
(the red-coloured part
of the tachometer dial).
●
In sports mode, only the 5 forward gears can be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector lever to the “R” (REVERSE) or “P” (P
ARK) position as required.
●
To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform an upshift when the selector lever is moved to the “+ (SHIFT UP)” position at certain vehi-cle speeds. Also, to prevent
over-revving of the engine,
the transmission may refuse to perform a downshift when the lever is moved to the “— (SHIFT DOWN)” position atcertain vehicle speeds.
●
In sports mode, downward shifts are made automatically when the vehicle slows down.
When the vehicle stops, 1st
gear is automatically selected.
●
When driving away on a slippe
ry road, push the selector
lever forward into the “+
(SHIFT UP)” position. This
causes the transmission to shift into the 2nd gear which is better for smooth driving away on a slippery road. Push the selector lever to the “— (SHIFT DOWN)” side to shiftback to the 1st gear.
Sports mode indicator
E00612300254
In sports mode, the currently selected position is indicated by the indicator (A) shown on the instrument panel.NOTE●
When sports mode is select
ed, the “D” indicator goes off.

When a malfunction occurs in the A/T
E00615100035
When the “N” indication lamp blinks
E00615200023
When the “N” indication lamp
(A) blinks with the “D”
(DRIVE) position or “Sports m
ode” being selected, the A/T
may be malfunctioning.
When the A/T fluid temper
ature warning lamp comes
on
E00615300109
The A/T fluid temperature warn
ing lamp comes on when the
automatic transmission fluid
temperature becomes abnormally
high. Normally the warning lamp comes on when the ignitionswitch is turned to the “ON” pos
ition, and then will go out after
a few seconds.
CAUTION
!●
If the “N” indication lamp blinks while driving in the “D” (DRIVE) position or “Sports Mode”, the A/T safety device may be operating due to a mal-function. We recommend you to have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
CAUTION
!●
If the lamp comes on, re
duce the engine speed and
stop the vehicle in a safe
area. Then set the selector
lever to “P” (PARK) posi
tion and idle the engine
until the warning
lamp goes off.
When the warning
lamp goes off, resume norm
al driving. If the warn-
ing lamp does not go off, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.

Operation of the A/T
E00604200342
Passing acceleration
E00604500156
To gain extra acceleration in
“D” (DRIVE) position, push the
accelerator to the floor. The auto
matic transmission will auto-
matically downshift.NOTE●
In “Sports mode”, downshifts
do not take place when the
accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.
Uphill/downhill driving
E00610500089
DRIVING UPHILL The transmission may not upshift
to a higher gear if the com-
puter determines the current sp
eed cannot be maintained once a
higher gear is engaged. For smoother vehicle performance, if you release the throttlewhile climbing a steep grade, th
e transmission may not upshift.
This is normal, as the computer
is temporarily preventing shift-
ing. After reaching the top of th
e hill, normal gear shift func-
tion will resume. DRIVING DOWNHILL When travelling down steep grad
es, the computer may auto-
matically select a lower gear. Th
is function assists engine brak-
ing efforts, reducing the need
for using the service brakes.
CAUTION
!●
Before selecting a gear with the engine running and the vehicle stationary, fully depress the brake pedalto prevent the vehicle from creeping. The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the gear is engaged, especially when th
e engine speed is high, at
fast idle or with the ai
r conditioning
operating, the
brakes should only be released when you are ready to drive away.
●
Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at all times. Using the left foot co
uld cause driver movement
delay in case of an emergency.
●
Operating the accelerator
pedal while the other foot
is resting on the brake peda
l will affect braking effi-
ciency and may cause pr
emature wear of brake
pads.
●
To prevent sudden accel
eration, never race the
engine when shifting from
the “P” (PARK) or “N”
(NEUTRAL) position.
●
Do not race the engine wi
th brake pedal pressed
when the vehicle is stationary. This can damage the A/T. Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal whileholding down the brake peda
l with the selector lever
in the “P” (PARK), “N” (NEUTRAL) or “D” (DRIVE) position, the increa
se in engine revolutions
may be limited.

Waiting
E00604600245
For short waiting periods, such as
at traffic signals, the vehicle
can be left in gear and held st
ationary with the service brake.
For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place theselector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.
Parking
E00604700161
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a complete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and th
en move the selector lever to
the “P” (PARK) position. If you are going to leave the vehicle unattended, always switch off the engine and remove the ignition key.NOTE●
On a slope, be sure to apply the parking brake before moving the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If you move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position before applying the parking brake, it may be difficult todisengage the selector lever
from the “P” (PARK) position
when next you drive the vehicle, requiring application of a strong force to the selector
lever to move from the “P”
(PARK) position.
CAUTION
!●
Never hold the vehicle statio
nary on a hill using the
accelerator pedal (without
using the brake pedal).
Always apply the parking brake and/or service brakes.

●
If the front and rear wheel lamps blink rapidly (twice per second) when you attempt to make a “4HLc”
↔
“4LLc”
selection, the selection cannot be made. Stop the vehicle and release the accelerator
pedal. Next, hold down the
clutch pedal (with M/T) or pl
ace the selector lever in the
“N” (NEUTRAL) position (with A/T) and make the range selection again.
CAUTION
!●
If a problem is detected in the transfer system, a safety device will activate. The front and rear wheellamps will go out, the cen
tre differential lock lamp
will blink, and transfer shif
ting will become impossi-
ble. Park your vehicle in
a safe place, turn off the
engine for a few moments. Restart the engine. The lamps should resume
normal operation. If the
lamps continue to blink, we recommend you to havethe vehicle checked as soon as possible.
