INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Surface Distortion
lUse a reliable straightedge and feeler gauge to check the flat-
ness of exhaust manifold fitting surface.
INSTALLATION
lInstall in the reverse order of removal paying attention to the following.
Tightening Exhaust Manifold Nuts
lTighten nuts in the numerical order shown in the figure.
lNo.6 and 7 indicate double tightening of bolts 1 and 3.
Installation of Heated Oxygen Sensor
CAUTION:
lDo not over torque the heated oxygen sensor. Doing so may cause damage to the heated oxygen
sensor, resulting in the MIL coming on.

easier after step 3. Regarding removal and installation of front cover, refer toEM-43, "
TIMING CHAIN".
1. Release fuel pressure. Refer toEC-34, "
FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE",EC-399, "FUEL PRESSURE
RELEASE".
2. Remove parts listed below.
lIgnition Coil; Refer toEM-27, "Removal and Installation".

CAUTION:
lDo not rotate crankshaft or camshaft while timing chain is
removed. It causes interference between valve and piston.
NOTE:
lChain tension holding work is not necessary. Crank sprocket
and timing chain do not disconnect structurally while front cover
is attached.
8. Loosen mounting bolts in the reverse order shown in the figure,
and remove camshaft brackets and camshafts.
lRemove No.1 camshaft bracket by slightly tapping it with a
soft tool such as a plastic hammer.
9. Remove valve lifter.
lCheck mounting positions, and store them without mixing
them up.
INSTALLATION
1. Install valve lifter.
lInstall them in the same positions they were in prior to removal.
2. Install camshaft.
lDistinction between intake and exhaust camshafts is performed with a difference of shapes of rear end.
Intake : Signal plate shape for camshaft position (PHASE) sensor.
Exhaust : Cone end shape.
lInstall camshafts so that knock pins on the front side are posi-
tioned as shown in the figure.

How to Select Piston and BearingEBS009R9
DESCRIPTION
*For the service parts, the grade for fitting cannot be selected between a piston pin and a connecting rod.
(Only 0 grade is available.) The information at the shipment from the plant is described as a reference.
lThe identification grade stamped on each part is the grade for the dimension measured in new condition.
This grade cannot apply to reused parts.
lFor reused or repaired parts, measure the dimension accurately. Determine the grade by comparing the
measurement with the values of each selection table.
lFor details of the measurement method of each part, the reuse standards and the selection method of the
selective fitting parts, refer to the text.
