INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY
Cylinder Body
CAUTION:
Use new brake fluid to clean. Do not use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene.
Check inside surface of cylinder for score, rust wear, damage or foreign materials. If any of the above con-
ditions are observed, replace cylinder body.
Minor damage from rust or foreign materials may be eliminated by polishing surface with a fine emery
paper. Replace cylinder body if necessary.
To r q u e M e m b e r
Check for wear, cracks, and damage. If damage or deformation is present, replace torque member.
Piston
CAUTION:
Piston sliding surface is plated, do not polish with emery paper even if rust of foreign materials
are stuck to sliding surface.
Check piston for score, rust, wear, damage or presence of foreign materials. Replace if any of the
above condition are observed.
Sliding Pin Bolts and Sliding Pin Boots
Check sliding pin bolts and sliding pin boots, for wear, damage and cracks. If damage or deformation is
present, replace the applicable part.
ASSEMBLY
1. Apply polyglycol ether based lubricant to piston seal, and install
them to cylinder body.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse piston seal.
2. Apply rubber grease to piston boot. Cover piston end with piston
boot, and install cylinder side lip on piston boot properly into the
groove on cylinder body.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse piston boot.
3. Apply brake fluid to piston, and press piston into cylinder body
by hand to assemble piston side lip on piston boot properly into
groove on piston.
CAUTION:
Press piston evenly and vary the pressing point to prevent
cylinder inner wall from being rubbed.

CAUTION:
Make sure boot is firmly in cylinder body groove on.
Do not reuse retainer ring.
5. Apply PBC (Poly Butyl Cuprysil) grease or silicone-based
grease to between shim and shim cover. Install inner shim, inner
shim cover to inner pad, and outer shim, outer shim cover to
outer pad.
6. Install pad retainers and, inner pad assembly and outer pad
assembly to torque member.
CAUTION:
Securely assemble pad retainer so that it is not being lifted
up from torque member.
7. Install sliding pin boot to torque member.
8. Press in piston until pads can be installed, and then install cylin-
der body to torque member. Use a disc brake piston tool (commercial service tool) to easily press piston
in.

FRONT WHEEL HUB AND KNUCKLE
7. Separate wheel hub and bearing assembly from drive shaft by
lightly tapping the end with a hammer (suitable tool) and a wood
block, and then remove hub lock nut. Remove wheel hub and
bearing assembly.
CAUTION:
Do not place drive shaft joint at an extreme angle. Also be
careful not to overextend slide joint.
Do not allow drive shaft to hang down without support for
housing (or joint sub-assembly), shaft and the other
parts.
NOTE:
Use a puller (suitable tool) if wheel hub and bearing assembly
and drive shaft cannot be separated even after performing the above procedure.
8. Remove splash guard from steering knuckle.
9. Remove cotter pin of steering outer socket and steering knuckle,
and then loosen nut. Refer to PS-17, "
COMPONENTS" .
10. Remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle so as not to
damage ball joint boot using the ball joint remover [SST].
CAUTION:
Temporarily tighten the nut to prevent damage to threads
and to prevent ball joint remover [SST] from suddenly com-
ing off.
11. Remove nut and bolt, and then remove steering knuckle from
transverse link.
12. Remove fixing nuts and bolts, and then remove steering knuckle
from strut assembly. Refer to FSU-7, "
Components" .
13. Remove stopper bolt from steering knuckle.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Check components for deformation, cracks, and other damage. Replace if there are.
Ball Joint Inspection
Check boots of transverse link and steering outer socket ball joint for breakage, axial play, and torque. Refer to
FSU-14, "
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL" , “TRANSVERSE LINK”, PS-23, "INSPECTION AFTER DISAS-
SEMBLY" , “STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE”.

Check drive shaft mounting point and joint for looseness and other damage.
Check boot for cracks and other damage.
CAUTION:
Replace entire drive shaft assembly when noise or vibration occur from drive shaft.
DRIVE SHAFT BOOT REPLACEMENT
1. Remove tires from vehicle.
2. Remove wheel sensor from steering knuckle. Refer to BRC-33, "
WHEEL SENSORS" .
CAUTION:
Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.
3. Remove torque member fixing bolts. Hang torque member in a place where it will not interfere with work.
Refer to BR-26, "
FRONT DISC BRAKE" .
NOTE:
Do not depress brake pedal while brake caliper is removed.
4. Remove disc rotor. Refer to FA X - 5 , "
Removal and Installation" .
5. Remove cotter pin, then loosen hub lock nut.
6. Separate wheel hub and bearing assembly from drive shaft by
lightly tapping the end with hammer (suitable tool) and a wood
block, and then remove hub lock nut.
CAUTION:
Do not place drive shaft joint at an extreme angle. Also be
careful not to overextend slide joint.
Do not allow drive shaft to hang down without support for
housing (or joint sub-assembly), shaft and the other
parts.
NOTE:
Use a puller (suitable tool) if wheel hub and drive shaft cannot
be separated even after performing the above procedure.
7. Remove fixing nuts and bolts, and then remove steering knuckle
from strut assembly. Refer to FSU-7, "
Components" .
8. Remove drive shaft from wheel hub and bearing assembly.
9. Remove boot bands, and then remove boot from joint sub-
assembly.
10. Screw a drive shaft puller (suitable tool) into joint sub-assembly
screw part to a length of 30 mm (1.18 in) or more. Support drive
shaft with one hand and pull out joint sub-assembly with a slid-
ing hammer (suitable tool) from shaft.
CAUTION:
Align a sliding hammer and drive shaft and remove them
by pulling firmly and uniformly.
If joint sub-assembly cannot be pulled out, try after
removing drive shaft from vehicle.

11. Remove circular clip from shaft.
12. Remove boot from shaft.
13. Clean the old grease on joint sub-assembly with paper towels.
14. Apply the appropriate amount of grease (NISSAN genuine
grease or equivalent) inside joint sub-assembly serration hole
until grease begins to ooze from ball groove and serration hole.
After inserting grease, use a shop cloth to wipe off old grease
that has oozed out.
15. Wrap serration on shaft with tape to protect boot from damage.
Install new boot and boot bands to shaft.
NOTE:
Do not reuse boot bands and boot.
16. Remove the tape wrapped around the serration on shaft.
17. Position circular clip on groove at shaft edge. Align both counter
axles of shaft edge and joint sub-assembly. Then, assemble
shaft with circular clip onto joint sub-assembly.
NOTE:
Do not reuse circular clip.
Drive joint inserter (suitable tool) is recommended when
installing circular clip.
18. Install joint sub-assembly to shaft using plastic hammer.
CAUTION:
Confirm that joint sub-assembly is correctly engaged while
rotating drive shaft.
19. Apply the balance of the specified amount of grease (NISSAN
