DIAGNOSTIC CHART
HINT: If diagnostic trouble codes ª22º (engine coolant temperature sensor circuit), ª24º (intake air
temperature sensor circuit),ª31º (manifold absolute pressure sensor circuit) and ª41º (throttle posi±
tion sensor circuit) are output simultaneously, E2 (sensor ground) may be open.
Check for open and short in harness and
connector between throttle position sensor and
ECM.Check for momentary interruption
(See page EG1±309).
Adjust or replace throttle position
sensor.
Repair or replace harness or
connector. Check operation for throttle position sensor.Check voltage of throttle position sensor.

Check voltage between terminal BATT of engine control module
connector and body ground.
Are the diagnostic trouble codes still in the memory when the
ignition switch is turned OFF?
Check and repair harness or connector
between engine control module and EN

DIAGNOSTIC CHART
HINT: If terminals TE1 and TE2 are connected with terminal E1, diagnostic trouble code is not
output or test mode is not activated.
Even though terminal TE1 is not connected with terminal E1, the malfunction indicator lamp
blinks.
For the above phenomenon, the likely cause is an open or short in the wire harness, or
malfunction inside the ECM.
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Terminals TE1 and TE2 are located in the data link connector 1 and 2.
The data link connector 1 located in the engine compartment and the data link connector 2 located
in the cabin. When these terminals are connected with the E1 terminal, diagnostic trouble codes in
normal mode or test mode can be read from the malfunction indicator lamp on the combination meter.
Check for open and short in harness and
connector between data link connector 1, 2
and ECM.Check continuity between terminal E1 and body
ground.

MASTER CYLINDER
As in the previous model, the lockheed and
lockheed type master cylinder is used on the models
without ABS, and the portless and lockheed type
master cylinder is used on the models with ABS.
The portless and portless type master cylinder is
used on the models with ABS & TRAC system.
ABS
1. General
As in the previous model, the braking of each wheel is controlled by the following 3 modes: pressure reduction,
pressure holding, and pressure holding mode.
During ABS activation, the ECU controls the fluid pressure of each front left and right wheels independently while
the fluid pressure of rear left and right wheels is controlled simultaneously.
However, the ABS actuator has been changed as shown in the table below. In addition, the diagnostic codes have
alsom been changed.
For diagnostic code check method, diagnostic code and diagnostic code clearance, see the 1997 Camry Repair
Manual (Pub. No. RM503U).
The operation of the ABS is the same as that of the '96 Corolla.

Panic Alarm Operation
When the ªpanicº switch of the transmitter is pushed, the theft deterrent system sounds the horns and flaashes the
headlights and taillights. To stop the alarm of the theft deterrent system that was triggered through this operation, push
the transmitter's ªunlockº switch or ªpanicº switch again.
Operation Verification Light Function
When the doors are locked by the transmitter switch
operation, the parking light and taillight flashes
once to confirm that the operation has been
completed.
Similarly, the parking light and taillight flashes
twice when the doors are unlocked.Light Flash Patterns
Transmitter Recognition code Registration Function
As in the '96 Avalon, the recognition code for each transmitter is registered in an EEPROM contained in the wieless
door lock ECU. Up to 2 different recognition codes can be resistered in teh EEPROM. The procedure for registering
a registration code is the same as that used in the '96 Avalon.
For details of the rrecogition code registration procedure, refer to the 1997 Camry Repair Manual (Pub. No.
RM503U).
