High-Strength Steel
HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL (HSS) PARTS
Generally, High-Strength Steel (HSS) is that which has an intensity value of at 35 kgf/mm2
(343 MPa),
and distinguished from mild steel.
The handling of HSS is the same as for mild steel, but the following should be observed.
1. Panel Hammering: Because HSS is thinner than mild steel, care should be taken to avoid warping
during hammering operations.
2. Removing Spot Welds: Because HSS is tougher than mild steel, damage will occur more easily to
a regular drill. Therefore, an HSS Spot Cutter is recommended.
Also, use a high-torque drill at low speed, and supply grinding oil to the drill during use.
3. Panel Welding: Panel welding procedures for HSS are exactly the same as for mild steel. Plug
welding should be done with MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welder. Do not gas weld or braze panels at
areas other than specified.

OIL AND FILTER
INSPECTION
1. CHECK OIL QUALITY
Check the oil for deterioration, entry of water, discoloring or thin-
ning.
If oil quality is visibly poor, replace the oil.
Oil grade (2JZ-GE):
API grade SH Energy-Conserving II or SJ, Energy-
Conserving or ILSAC multigrade engine oil.
SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for your vehicle, for
good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weath-
er.
Oil grade (2JZ-GTE):
API grade SH Energy-Conserving II or SJ, Energy-
Conserving or ILSAC multigrade engine oil.
Recommended viscosity is as shown in the illustra-
tion.
2. CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL
The oil level should be between the low level and full level marks
on the dipstick.
If low, check for the leakage and add oil up to full level mark.
3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
4. 2JZ-GTE:
REMOVE NO.2 AIR TUBE
Loosen the 2 hose clamps, and remove 2 bolts and air tube.
5. 2JZ-GTE M/T:
REMOVE DRIVE BELT TENSION DAMPER
Remove the 2 nuts and tensioner damper.
6. REMOVE DRIVE BELT
Loosen the drive belt tension by turning the drive belt tensioner
clockwise, and remove the drive belt.

2. INSPECT SPARK PLUGS
NOTICE:
Never use a wire brush for cleaning.
Never attempt to adjust the electrode gap on used a
spark plug.
Spark plugs should be replaced every 100,000 km
(60,000 miles).
(a) Remove the ignition coils assemblies.
(See page IG-6)
(b) Inspect the electrode.
Using a megger (insulation resistance meter), measure
the insulation resistance.
Standard correct insulation resistance:
10 MW or more
If the resistance is less than specified, proceed to step (c).
HINT:
If a megger is not available, the following simple method of in-
spection provides fairly accurate results.
Simple Method:
Quickly race the engine 5 times to 4,000 rpm.
Remove the spark plug.
Visually check the spark plug.
If the electrode is dry ... OK
If the electrode is wet ... Proceed to step (d).
Reinstall the spark plug.
(c) Using a 16 mm plug wrench, remove the 6 spark plugs.
(d) Visually check the spark plug for thread damage and insu-
lator damage.
If abnormal, replace the spark plug.
Recommended spark plug:
DENSO madePK20R11
NGK madeBKR6EP11
(e) Inspect the electrode gap.
Maximum electrode gap for used spark plug:
1.3 mm (0.051 in.)
If the gap is greater than maximum, replace the spark plug.
Correct electrode gap for new spark plug:
1.1 mm (0.043 in.)
NOTICE:
If adjusting the gap of a new spark plug, bend only the base
of the ground electrode. Do not touch the tip. Never attempt
to adjust the gap on the used plug.
