5. COMPONENTS ADJACENT TO THE BODY PANELS Locations of ECUs (Cont'd)
Many ECUs are mounted in this vehicle.
Take the following precautions during body repair to prevent damage to the ECUs.

Before starting electric welding operations, disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery.
When the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery, memory of the clock and audio
systems will be cancelled. So before starting work, make a record of the contents memorized by each
memory system. Then when work is finished, reset the clock and audio systems as before.
When the vehicle has tilt and telescopic steering, power seat and outside rear view mirror, which are all
equipped with memory function, it is not possible to make a record of the memory contents.
So when the operation is finished, it will be necessary to explain this fact to the customer, and request
the customer to adjust the features and reset the memory.

Do not expose the ECUs to ambient temperatures above 80°C (176°F).
NOTICE: if it is possible the ambient temperature may reach 80°C (176°F) or more, remove the ECUs
from the vehicle before starting work.

Be careful not to drop the ECUs and not to apply physical shocks to them.
Various types of component parts are mounted directly on or adjacently to the body panels.
Strictly observe the following precautions to prevent damaging these components and the body panels
during handling.

Before repairing the body panels, remove their components or apply protective covers over the
components.

Before prying components off using screwdriver or a scraper, etc., attach protective tape to the tool
tip or blade to prevent damaging the components an the body paint.

Before removing components from the outer surface of the body, attach protective tape to the body
to ensure no damage to painted areas.
HINT: Apply touch-up paint to any damaged paint surfaces.

Before drilling or cutting sections, make sure that there are no wires, etc. on the reverse side.

2. CONTROL SYSTEM
*SEQUENTIAL MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM
THE SEQUENTIAL MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM MONITORS THE ENGINE CONDITION THROUGH THE
SIGNALS INPUT FROM EACH SENSOR (INPUT SIGNALS FROM (1) TO (13) ETC.) TO THE ENGINE CONTROL
MODULE. THE BEST FUEL INJECTION TIMING IS DECIDED BASED ON THIS DATA AND THE PROGRAM
MEMORIZED BY THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE, AND THE CONTROL SIGNAL IS OUTPUT TO TERMINALS #10,
#20, #30, #40, #50 AND #60 OF THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE TO OPERATE THE INJECTOR (INJECT THE FUEL).
THE SEQUENTIAL MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM PRODUCES CONTROLS OF FUEL INJECTION
OPERATION BY THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE IN RESPONSE TO THE DRIVING CONDITIONS.
*ESA SYSTEM
THE ESA SYSTEM MONITORS THE ENGINE CONDITION THROUGH THE SIGNALS INPUT TO THE ENGINE
CONTROL MODULE FROM EACH SENSOR (INPUT SIGNALS FROM (1), (2), (4) TO (13) ETC.). THE BEST IGNITION
TIMING IS DECIDED ACCORDING TO THIS DATA AND THE MEMORIZED DATA IN THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE
AND THE CONTROL SIGNAL IS OUTPUT TO TERMINALS IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5 AND IGT6 THESE SIGNALS
CONTROL THE IGNITER TO PROVIDE THE BEST IGNITION TIMING FOR THE DRIVING CONDITIONS.
*HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR HEATER CONTROL SYSTEM
THE MAIN HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR, SUB HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR HEATER CONTROL SYSTEM TURNS THE
HEATER ON WHEN THE INTAKE AIR VOLUME IS LOW (TEMP. OF EXHAUST EMISSIONS IS LOW) AND WARMS UP
THE OXYGEN SENSOR TO IMPROVE DETECTION PERFORMANCE OF THE SENSOR. THE ENGINE CONTROL
MODULE EVALUATES THE SIGNALS FROM EACH SENSOR (INPUT SIGNALS FROM (1), (2), (4), (9) TO (11) ETC.),
AND OUTPUTS CURRENT TO TERMINALS HT1, HTS TO CONTROL THE HEATER
*IDLE AIR CONTROL SYSTEM
THE IDLE AIR CONTROL SYSTEM (STEP MOTOR TYPE) INCREASES THE ENGINE SPEED AND PROVIDES IDLING
STABILITY FOR FAST IDLE-UP WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, AND WHEN THE IDLE SPEED HAS DROPPED DUE TO
ELECTRICAL LOAD AND SO ON. THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE EVALUATES THE SIGNALS FROM EACH
SENSOR (INPUT SIGNALS FROM (1), (4), (5), (8), (9), (11) ETC.), OUTPUTS CURRENT TO TERMINALS ISC1, ISC2,
ISC3 AND ISC4 TO CONTROL THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE.
*EGR CONTROL SYSTEM
THE EGR CONTROL SYSTEM DETECTS THE SIGNAL FROM EACH SENSOR (INPUT SIGNALS FROM (1), (4), (9), (10)
ETC.), AND OUTPUTS CURRENT TO TERMINAL EGR TO CONTROL THE EGR VALVE.
*FUEL PUMP CONTROL SYSTEM
THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE OUTPUTS CURRENT TO TERMINAL FPC AND CONTROLS THE FUEL PUMP ECU
AND FUEL PUMP DRIVE SPEED IN RESPONSE TO THE DRIVING CONDITIONS
3. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
WITH THE DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM, WHEN THERE IS A MALFUNCTION IN THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SIGNAL
SYSTEM, THE MALFUNCTIONING SYSTEM IS RECORDED IN THE MEMORY. THE MALFUNCTIONING SYSTEM CAN BE
FOUND BY READING THE CODE DISPLAYED BY THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP.
4. FAIL-SAFE SYSTEM
WHEN A MALFUNCTION HAS OCCURRED IN ANY SYSTEM, IF THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF ENGINE TROUBLE BEING
CAUSED BY CONTINUED CONTROL BASED ON THE SIGNALS FROM THAT SYSTEM, THE FAIL-SAFE SYSTEM
EITHER CONTROLS THE SYSTEM BY USING DATA (STANDARD VALUES) RECORDED IN THE ENGINE CONTROL
MODULE MEMORY OR ELSE STOPS THE ENGINE.

(b) When installing the battery, be especially careful not to in-
correctly connect the positive (+) and negative (-) cables.
(c) Do not permit parts to receive a severe impact during re-
moval or installation. Handle all SFI parts carefully, espe-
cially the ECM.
(d) Do not be careless during troubleshooting as there are
numerous transistor circuits and even slight terminal con-
tact can further troubles.
(e) Do not open the ECM cover.
(f) When inspecting during rainy weather, take care to pre-
vent entry of water. Also, when washing the engine
compartment, prevent water from getting on the SFI parts
and wiring connectors.
(g) Parts should be replaced as an assembly.
(h) Care is required when pulling out and inserting wiring con-
nectors.
(1) Release the lock and pull out the connector, pulling
on the connectors.
(2) Fully insert the connector and check that it is locked.
(i) When inspecting a connector with a volt/ohmmeter
(1) Carefully take out the water-proofing rubber if it is
a water-proof type connector.
(2) Insert the test probe into the connector from the wir-
ing side when checking the continuity, amperage or
voltage.
(3) Do not apply unnecessary force to the terminal.
(4) After checking, install the water-proofing rubber on
the connector securely.
(j) Use SST for inspection or test of the injector or its wiring
connector.

8. FUEL SYSTEM
(a) When disconnecting the high pressure fuel line, a large
amount of gasoline will spill out, so observe the following
procedures:
(1) Disconnect the fuel pump connector.
(2) Start the engine. After the engine has stopped on
its own, turn off the ignition switch.

(3) Put a container under the connection.
(4) Slowly loosen the connection.
(5) Disconnect the connection.
(6) Plug the connection with a rubber plug.
(7) Reconnect the fuel pump connector.
(b) When connecting the flare nut or union bolt on the high
pressure pipe union, observe the following procedures:
(1) Union Bolt Type:
Always use a new gasket.
(2) Union Bolt Type:
Tighten the union bolt by hand.
(3) Union Bolt Type:
Tighten the union bolt to the specified torque.
Torque: 29 N´m (300 kgf´cm, 22 ft´lbf)
(4) Flare Nut Type:
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the flare nut and
tighten the flare nut by hand.
(5) Flare Nut Type:
Using SST, tighten the flare nut to the specified
torque.

Torque: 30 N´m (310 kgf´cm, 22 ft´lbf)
HINT:
Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 30 cm (11.81 in.).
(c) Observe the following precautions when removing and
installing the injectors.
(1) Never reuse the O-ring.
(2) When placing a new O-ring on the injector, take
care not to damage it in any way.
(3) Coat a new O-ring with spindle oil or gasoline be-
fore installing-never use engine, gear or brake oil.
(d) Install the injector to the delivery pipe and intake manifold
as shown in the illustration.
