Note 1 ± Visually inspect and replace the following items if deformed:

Note 2 ± Visually inspect and replace the following items if deformed:
Instrument panel and Instrument panel reinforcement
Glove compartment and glove compartment door
Note 2a ± Same as note 2 without involving the glove compartment.
Note 3 ± If the SRS wire harness is damaged only at the connectors to the front
sensors:
Use a repair wire specially designed for use in the SRS airbag system at the front sensor
(PN 82988±24010/50010/33010).
OR
Replace the entire wire harness assembly.
Note 3a ± Replace the entire wire harness if damaged or has been found to be faulty
during troubleshooting.
Note 4 ± Replace the following items if deformed or if diagnostic tests show a fault:
Steering wheel (If the horn button contact plate has been deformed, never attempt to
repair it±always replace the steering wheel).
Spiral cable
Note 5 ± Replace center airbag sensor assembly if:
Center airbag sensor assembly has been found faulty in troubleshooting.
Center airbag sensor assembly shows evidence of the following:
1. Deformation of the bracket or case
2. Vinyl seal broken
3. Damage to connector
Center airbag sensor assembly has been dropped.
Note 6 ± Replace side impact sensors and side airbag assembly with seat cover if
deployed. Side airbag circuits are independent from each other, and one
side may deploy while the other does not.
Note 7 ± 1998 Tacoma is equipped with a passenger airbag cutoff switch. If the
switch is ªOFFº when impact occurs, replace the switch. If the switch is in
the ªONº position when impact occurs, and the passenger airbag deploys,
check the switch as directed by the Repair Manual.

5. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL
CABLE
(a) Remove the 4 screws.
(b) Disconnect the connectors and airbag connector.
6. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE
(See page BE-16)
NOTICE:
Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.
7. DISCONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
(a) Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control
valve shaft.
(b) Loosen bolt B and remove bolt A.
8. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the brake pedal return spring.
(b) Disconnect the connectors.
(c) Loosen the hole cover clamp.
(d) Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Torque the 4 column assembly set nuts.
Torque: 25 N´m (260 kgf´cm, 19 ft´lbf)
(b) Connect the connectors.
(c) Install the brake pedal return spring.
(d) Tighten the hole cover clamp.
2. CONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
(a) Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and con-
trol valve shaft.
(b) Torque the bolt A.
Torque: 35 N´m (360 kgf´cm, 26 ft´lbf)
(c) Torque the bolt B.
Torque: 35 N´m (360 kgf´cm, 26 ft´lbf)
3. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE
(See page BE-16)
4. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL
CABLE
(a) Tighten the 4 screws.
(b) Connect the connectors and airbag connector.
5. INSTALL THESE PARTS:

(a) Heater to Register No.2 duct
(b) Finish lower LH panel
(c) Finish panel
(d) Cluster finish center panel
(e) Cluster finish panel LH
(f) Cluster finish panel RH

6. INSTALL COLUMN UPPER AND LOWER COVERS
Tighten the 5 screws.
7. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE
(a) Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
(b) Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it be-
comes harder to turn the cable.
(c) Rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the
marks.
HINT:
The spiral cable will rotate about 3 turns to either left or right of
the center.
