Functions of ABS
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) regulates the
brake pressure in critical driving situations:
= During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insu"Pcient tire trac-
tion, the wheels are prevented from locking.
= Vehicle steerability while braking is ensured.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con- ditions and can serve as a reminder to take extra
care while driving.
System limits
= ABS is active from speeds of approx. 3 mph
(5 km/h).
= ABS may be impaired or may not function if a
malfunction has occurred and the yellow %
ABS warning lamp lights up continuously a"ser
the vehicle is started.
Function of BAS&WARNING Risk of an accident caused by a
malfunction in BAS (Brake Assist System)
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emergency braking situation is
increased.
Depress the brake pedal with full force in
emergency braking situations. ABS pre-
vents the wheels from locking.
The Brake Assist System (BAS) supports your emergency braking situation with additional brake
force.
If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BAS is
activated:
= BAS automatically boosts the brake pressure.
= BAS can shorten the braking distance.
= ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
The brakes will function as usual once you release the brake pedal. BAS is deactivated.
Function of ESP n&WARNING

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP n
) can moni-
tor and improve driving stability and traction in
the following situations within physical limits:
= When pulling away on wet or slippery roads.
= When braking.

If the vehicle deviates from the direction desired
by the driver, ESP n
can stabilize the vehicle by
intervening in the following ways:
= One or more wheels are braked.
= The engine output is adapted according to the
situation.
When ESP n

If the vehicle is only braked with the HOLD
function it could, in the following situations,
roll away:
= If there is a malfunction in the system or in
the power supply.
= If the HOLD function is deactivated by
depressing the accelerator pedal or brake
pedal, e.g. by a vehicle occupant.
Always secure the vehicle against rolling away before you leave it.
Requirements
= The vehicle is stationary.
= The driver\bs door is closed or the seat belt on
the driver\bs side is fastened.
= The vehicle has been started or has been
automatically switched o"M by the ECO start/
stop function.
= The electric parking brake is released.
= Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is deactiva-
ted.
= The transmission is in position [, ^ or \\.
Activating the HOLD functionDepress the brake pedal, and a"ser a short
time quickly depress further until the

=The electric parking brake is released.
This gives you enough time to move your foot
from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and
depress it before the vehicle begins to roll away.&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to the vehicle rolling away
A"ser a short time, Hill Start Assist no longer
holds the vehicle.
Swi"sly move your foot from the brake
pedal to the accelerator pedal. Do not
leave the vehicle when it is being held by
Hill Start Assist.
ATTENTION ASSIST

q Function of ATTENTION ASSIST
ATTENTION ASSIST assists you on long, monoto-
nous journeys, e.g. on highways and trunk roads.
If indicators of fatigue or increasing lapses in con- centration on the part of the driver are detected,
the system suggests taking a break.
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
always detect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
ted and attentive driver. On long journeys, take regular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
quate recuperation.
You can choose between two settings:
= Standard: normal system sensitivity.
= Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The driver
is warned earlier and the attention level detec-
ted by ATTENTION ASSIST is adapted accord-
ingly.
If fatigue or increasing inattention is detected, the
warning appears in the driver display: ATTEN-
TION ASSIST: Take a Break! . you can acknowl-
edge the message and take a break if necessary. If you do not take a break and ATTENTION ASSIST
continues to detect increasing lapses in concen-
tration, you will be warned again a"ser a minimum
of 15 minutes.
If ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculate the
attention level and cannot issue a warning, the
System Suspended message appears.
If the driver display shows a warning, a service
area search is o"Mered in the multimedia system.You can select a rest area and start navigation to
this rest area.
When you restart the vehicle, ATTENTION ASSIST is automatically switched on. The last selected
sensitivity level remains stored.
The following information is displayed in the driv-
er\bs display:
= The length of the journey since the last break
= The attention level determined by ATTENTION
ASSIST:
- The more segments 1 of the circle dis-
played, the higher the detected attention level.

-Fewer segments 1 are displayed in the
circle as the attention level decreases.
System limits
ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the 37 mph
(60 km/h) to 124 mph (200 km/h) speed range.
The microsleep detection function is available at a
speed of 12 mph (20 km/h) and above.
If the system is not available due to an error, the
ATTENTION ASSIST warning light is permanently
lit Û in the driver display
Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION
ASSIST functions only in a restricted manner and warnings may be delayed or not occur:
= If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes.
= If the road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes).
= If there is a strong side wind.
= If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).
= If the Steering Assist function of Active Dis-
tance Assist DISTRONIC is active.= If the clock is set to the incorrect time.
= If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
= if ESP n
is not available
Also observe any information regarding display
messages that can be displayed in the driver\bs display.
The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness or alertness
assessment is reset and restarted when continu- ing the journey in the following situations:
= You switch o"M the vehicle.
= If you unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver\bs door (e.g. to change drivers or take abreak).

qFunction of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
set speed on free-"Oowing roads. If vehicles are
detected ahead, the set distance will be main- tained, until the vehicle comes to a standstill if
necessary. The vehicle will accelerate or brake
depending on the distance to the vehicle in front and the set speed. The speed and distance to thevehicle in front are set and saved using the steer-ing wheel.
Available speed range: = Vehicles without Driving Assistance Package:
15 mph (20 km/h) - 100 mph (160 km/h)
= Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package:
15 mph (20 km/h) - 130 mph (210 km/h)
\bThe adjustable set speed may di"Mer if a limit
speed (e.g. winter tire limit) is stored.

DISTRONIC:
= Adjusts the driving style depending on the
selected drive program (energy-saving, com-fortable or dynamic) (  page 218)

turn signal indicator is switched on to change
to the overtaking lane
= Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package:
- Reacts to stationary vehicles detected in
urban speed ranges (except bicycles and
motorcycles)
- Takes one-sided overtaking restrictions
into account on highways or on multi-lane
roads with separate roadways (country-
dependent)\bIt is possible to set the driving mode of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC on the DYNAMICSELECT menu. Depending on which drive pro-gram is selected, the driving characteristicscan be geared towards energy economy, com-fort or dynamic performance. The driving style
can be permanently set to Comfort or
Dynamic on the Active Distance Assist menu (  page 267).
Vehicles with Active Parking Assist and Driving
Assistance Package: if Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC has braked the vehicle to a standstill,
it can automatically follow the vehicle in front
when it drives o"M again within 30 seconds. If a
critical situation is detected in the surrounding area when the vehicle drives o"M, such as a person
in the path of the vehicle, a visual and acoustic warning will be given indicating that the driver
must now take control of the vehicle. The vehicle
will not be accelerated any further.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognize
dangers (  page 252).
DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
