WARNING
■Battery precautions
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
● Do not swallow the battery. Doing so may cause chemical burns.
● A coin battery or button battery is used in the electronic key. If a battery is
swallowed, it may cause severe chemical burns in as little as 2 hours and
may result in death or serious injury.
● Keep away new and removed batteries from children.
● If the cover cannot be firmly closed, stop using the electronic key and stow
the key in the place where children cannot reach, and then cont act any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or an y reliable
repairer.
● If you accidentally swallow a battery or put a battery into a part of your
body, get emergency medical attention immediately.
■ To prevent battery explosion or leakage of flammable liquid or gas
● Replace the battery with a new battery of the same type. If a wrong type of
battery is used, it may explode.
● Do not expose batteries to extremely low pressure due to high altitude or
extremely high temperatures.
● Do not burn, break or cut a battery.
■ Certification for the lithium battery
CAUTION:
RISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS REPLACED BY AN INCORRECT
TYPE.
DISPOSE OF USED BATTERIES ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS
NOTICE
■ For normal operation after replacing the battery
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidents:
● Always work with dry hands.
Moisture may cause the battery to rust.
● Do not touch or move any other component inside the remote control.

■Electric power steering system warning light (warning buzzer)
When the 12-volt battery charge becomes insufficient or the vol tage tempo-
rarily drops, the electric power steering system warning light may come on
and the warning buzzer may sound.
■ If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on while driving
For some models, the malfunction indicator lamp will come on if the fuel tank
becomes completely empty. If the fuel tank is empty, refuel the vehicle imme-
diately. The malfunction indicator lamp will go off after sever al trips.
If the malfunction indicator lamp does not go off, contact any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer as soon
as possible.
■ Front passenger detection sensor, seat belt reminder and warning
buzzer
● If luggage is placed on the front passenger seat, the front passenger detec-
tion sensor may cause the warning light to flash and the warnin g buzzer to
sound even if a passenger is not sitting in the seat.
● If a cushion is placed on the seat, the sensor may not detect a passenger,
and the warning light may not operate properly.
■ Warning light operations for unfastened rear passenger seat belts
● When opening and closing the rear door, the warning light comes on for
approximately a certain period of time.
● When any of the rear seat belts are unfastened, the warning light comes on.
When the rear doors are opened and closed while the warning light is on, the
warning light will turn off after approximately a certain perio d of time.
■ When the tire pressure warning light comes on
Inspect the appearance of the tire to check that the tire is no t punctured.
If the tire is punctured: P. 699, 729
If the tire is not punctured:
Carry out the following procedure after the tire temperature ha s lowered suffi-
ciently.
● Check the tire inflation pressure and adjust to the appropriate level.
● If the warning light does not go out even after several minutes, check that
the tire inflation pressure is at the specified level and carry out initialization.
( P. 619)
The warning light may come on again if the above operations are conducted
without first allowing the tire temperature to lower sufficient ly.

When trouble arises
■If a message that indicates the need for referring to Owner’s Manual is
displayed
● If “Engine Coolant Temperature High.”is shown, follow the instructions
(P. 757).
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact any authoriz ed Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r. Continuing to
drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
• “Braking Power Low.”
• “Charging System Malfunction.”
• “Engine Oil Pressure Low.”
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retai ler or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
• “Hybrid System Malfunction.”
• “Check Engine.”
• “Hybrid Battery System Malfunction.”
• “Accelerator system Malfunction.”
• “Entry & Start System Malfunction.”
• “Exhaust filter full.” (P. 531)
• “Hybrid System Stopped”
• “Engine Stopped”
● If the “Low 12-Volt Battery.” is shown,
• When the display goes off after several seconds (displays for about 6
seconds):
Maintain the hybrid system operation for more than 15 minutes a nd
charge the 12-volt battery.
• When the display does not go off:
Start up the hybrid system using the procedures: P. 749
● If “Maintenance required for Traction battery cooling parts. See owner’s
manual.” is shown, the filters may be clogged, the air intake v ents may be
blocked, or there may be a gap i n the duct. Therefore, perform the following
correction procedure.
• If the air intake vents and filters of the hybrid battery (tra ction battery) are
dirty, perform the procedure on P. 640 to clean them.
• If the warning message is shown when the air intake vents and filters of
the hybrid battery (traction battery) are not dirty, have the v ehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer,
or any reliable repairer immediately.
6967-2. Steps to take in an emergency
C-HR_HV_OM_Europe_OM10720E
■ If “Engine Oil Level Low. Add or Replace Oil.”is displayed
The engine oil level is low. Check the level of the engine oil, and add if neces-
sary.
This message may appear if the vehicle is stopped on a slope. M ove the
vehicle to a level surface and check to see if the message disa ppears.
■ If “Hybrid System Stopped. Steering Power Low.”is displayed
This message is displayed if the hybrid system is stopped while driving.
When steering wheel operations are heavier than usual, grip the steering
wheel firmly and operate it using more force than usual.
■ If “Hybrid System Overheated. Reduced Output Power.” is shown
This message may be shown when driving under severe operating c ondi-
tions. (For example, when driving up a long steep hill.)
Handling method: P. 757
■ If “Depress Brake When Vehicle is Stopped. Hybrid System may Over-
heat.” is shown
The message may be shown when the accelerator pedal is depresse d to hold
the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill, etc.
The hybrid system may overheat. Release the accelerator pedal a nd depress
the brake pedal.
■ If “Traction battery needs to be protected. Shift into to restart.” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction bat tery) charge
has become extremely low because the shift lever has been left in N for a cer-
tain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
■ If “Traction battery needs to be protected. Refrain from the use of
position.” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift lever is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) cannot be charged when the shift lever
is in N, shift the shift lever to P when the vehicle is stopped .
■ If “Shift is in Release Accelerator Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depres sed and
the shift lever is in N.
Release the accelerator pedal and shift the shift lever to D or R.
■ If “Shift to Before Exiting Vehicle” is shown
