-Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
complete ly empty . The engine cou ld mis
fire. Unburned fuel could also get into the
exhaust system and this cou ld cause the
catalytic converter to overheat.
- Do not switch off the ignition while the vehi
cle is moving.
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle un
der these conditions, as otherwise fuel can
reach the catalytic converter. This could re
sult in overheating of the converter, requ ir
i ng its replacement.
- To assure efficient operation of the Emis
sion Control System:
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommen
dations in your Warranty

book let.
- Lack of proper maintenance as we ll as im
proper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the emission control system and could lead to damage.
® For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emission Control System is op
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op
erat ing states. This depends on the su lfur
content of the fuel being used. Using a differ
ent brand of fue l may help, or filling the tank
w ith lead-free super grade gasoline .
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to: veh icles with diesel engine
The diesel particulate filter filters nearly all of
the soot particles out of the exhaust. The filter
cleans itself automatically under normal driving
conditions . If the filter cannot clean itself (for ex
ample , because you are only driving short distan
ces), the fi lter becomes clogged with soot and

Using the proper engine oil is important for the
functionality and s ervice life of the engine. Your
engine was factory-filled with a high -quality oil
which can usually be used throughout the entire
yea r.
Note
Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not
cover damage or malfunctions d ue to failure
to follow rec ommended maintenance and use
requireme nts as s et forth in the Audi Owner's
Manual and Warranty & Maintenance booklet .
- Use only a high quality engine oi l that ex-
pressly complies with the Au di oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's engine.
Using any o ther oil can cause serious engine
damage.
- Do not mix any lubricants o r other additives
into the engine oil. Doing so can cause en
gine damage.
@ Tips
If you need to add oil and there is none availa
ble that meets the Audi o il quality standard
your eng ine requ ires, you may add a total of
no more than 0 .5 qt (0.5 l) of a h igh-quali ty
"synthet ic"oil that meets the following speci
fications.
- Applies to: gaso line engine: ACEA A3 or
API SM with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30,
SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts .
In order to provide effective lub rication and cool
ing of in ternal engine componen ts, all internal
Ch eck ing and Filling
combustion engines consume a certain amo unt
of oil. Oil consumption vari es from engin e to en
gine and may change s ignificantly over the life of
the engine . Typ ically, engines w ith a specified
break-in period (see¢
page 65) consume mo re
o il during the break -in per iod than they consume
after o il consumption has stab il ized .
Under normal cond itions, the rate of oil con
sump tion depends on the qu ality and viscos ity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
wh ich the engine is operated, the amb ient tem
perature and road co ndit ions. Further facto rs a re
the amount of oi l di lution from wate r condensa
tion or fuel resid ue and the oxidat ion level of the
o il. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the oil consumption may increase over
time unti l replac ement of worn components may
become necessary.
With a ll these variab les coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumption can be estab
li sh ed or sp ecified . There is no alternative to reg
u lar and frequent checking of the oi l level, see
Note .
If the yellow engine oil leve l warning symbo l in

sumes excessive amounts of oil, we recom mend that you consu lt your Audi dealer to
have the cause of your concern properly di
agnosed . Keep in mind that the accurate
measurement of oil consumption requi res
great care and may take some time . Your
Audi dealer has inst ructions about how to
measure oil consump tion accurate ly.

The engine oil must be changed according to the
intervals specified in you r Warranty
& Mainte
n ance booklet. This is very impo rtant because the
l ub ricating properties of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Unde r some ci rcumstances the e ngine o il should
be cha nged more frequently . Change oil mo re of
ten if yo u drive mostly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic conditions, or have your vehi
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
l ook dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposa l, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re
