If the indicato r light blinks and the message ap­
pears, there is not enough braking power to se­
cure the vehicle . The brakes have overhea ted . The
ve hicle could roll away even on a small incline.

tion correc ted.

• Switch off engine and check coolant lev el!
The coolant leve l is too low.
Do not cont inue driving and switch the engine
off. Check the coolant level

A WARNING
- Never open the hood if you can see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. This increases the risk of burns . Wait until you no longer see o r hear
steam or coolant escaping .
- The engine compartment in any vehicle can
be a dange rous area . Stop the engine and
allow it to cool befo re working in the engine
compa rtment. Always follow the informa­
tion fo und in

0 Alternator/vehicle battery
• Electrical s ystem: m alfunction! Battery is
not being charged
There is a ma lfunction in the a lternator or the ve­
hicle e lectrical system.
Drive to an au thorized A udi dealer or au thori zed
Audi Se rvice Fa cility immediate ly. Beca use the ve ­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off a ll unneces­
sary ele ctrical eq uipment such as the radio . Se e
your authori zed Audi dea ler or authori zed Audi
Ill>

Driver information s ystem
The MI L light may a lso ill uminate if there is a
leak in the on-board f uel vapor recovery system.
If the light ill uminates after a ref uell ing, stop
the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is
proper ly closed

In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can on ly be disp layed using specia l diag­
nostic eq uipment (generic scan too l for 0BD).
I n order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip ­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the rig ht of the hood
release ¢
fig. 14.
Your author ized Audi dealer or a qualified service
station can interpret the code and perform the necessary repa ir.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for pe r­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be facto ry equipped wi th t ires
that a re rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph
(2 10 km/h). This is less t han the maxim um speed
of yo ur vehicle. To redu ce t he risk of s udden tire
fa ilur e and loss o f control if the veh icle is operat ­
ed at excessive speeds, yo ur vehicle a lso has an
electron ic speed limiter . The electronic spee d
lim ite r prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating. For more information
c;, page 218.
I f th e en gine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed s ignals, the Ma lfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL)
II will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Aud i dealer for
assis tance .
S models
Your veh icle's top speed is e lectron ica lly limited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If th e engine contro l unit receives faul ty vehi cle
roadspeed signa ls, the Malfunct io n Indicator
Lamp ( MIL)

Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust your speed to suit preva iling road, traf­

In the normal m ode D, the tr ansmission auto­
matica lly selects t he suitab le gear ratio . It de­
pends on en gine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Select the
s p o rt m od e S for sporty driving. The
ve hicle makes full use of the engine's power .
Shifting is more noticeable when accelerat ing.
To move from selector lever position N to D, you must press the brake pedal and the vehicle must
be traveling less than 1 mph (2 km/h) or be sta­
tionary ¢.&. .
.&_ WARNING
-The veh icle can roll even if the ignition is
switched off.
- Never select R or P while driving, because
this increases the risk of an accident.
-
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the eng ine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the veh icle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake in all selector
lever positions (except P) when the eng ine is
running . Otherwise, th is increases the r isk
of an accident.
- Do not inadvertently press the accelerator
peda l w hen the veh icle is stopped if a gear is
engaged. Ot herwise the veh icle will start to
move immediately, even i f the parking bra ke
is set. This cou ld res ult in a crash .
- T o de cre ase the risk of an accident, these­
lector lever must be in the P posi tion and
the parking brake must be set before open­
ing the hood and working on a r unning en­
gine. Always read and fo llow the applicable
warnings

- If you accidenta lly select N while driv ing,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal and
wait for the engine to slow down to idle be­
fore selecting D/S.

Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents you from select­
ing a gear accidentally, causing the vehicle to
roll.

Automatic shift lock (ASL)
The selector lever is locked in the P and N posi­
t ions when the ig nit ion is switched on. The re­
move it from t hese positions, the driver must
press the b rake peda l and press the lock button
at the same time. The following message ap­
pears in the inst rument cluster display when the
selector lever is in the P or N posi tion to remind
t h e driver:
Brake pedal mu st be applied to shift from P
The automatic shift lock only funct ions when the
vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h) . At higher speeds, the lock is automati­
c a lly deactivated in the N pos ition .
The selector lever is not locked when shifting
quick ly throug h N, for example from R to D. This
makes it possible to free the veh icle when it is
stuck by "rocking" it. The selecto r lever lock en-
gages if t he lever stays in t he N pos it ion longer ...

Airbag system
_&. WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag in­
flates, always wear safety belts properly.
- If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sit­
ting sideways or out of position in any way,
your risk of injury is much h igher.
- You will also receive serious injuries and
could even be killed if you are up against the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag ¢
page 148.
More important things to know about front
airbags

Safety belts are important to help keep front
seat occupants in the proper seated position so
that airbags can unfold properly and provide sup­
p lemental protection in a frontal collision.
The front airbags are designed to provide addi­
tional protection for the chest and face of the
driver and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been positioned so that the oc-
cupant is properly seated as far as possible
from the airbag,
- and for adjustable head restraints: the head re-
straints have been properly adjusted .
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye with
great force, things you have on your lap or have
placed on the seat could become dangerous pro­
jectiles, and be pushed into you if the airbag in­
flates .
When an airbag deploys, fine dust is released .
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
veh icle . This dust is made up mostly of a powder

used to lubricate the airbags as they deploy. It
could irritate skin.
It is impor tant to remember that while the sup­
plemental airbag system is designed to reduce
the likelihood of serious injuries, other injuries,
for example swelling, bruising and minor abra­
s ions, can also happen when airbags inflate. Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body . Front airbags supplement the three­
po int safety belts only in some frontal collisions
i n which the vehicle deceleration is high enough
to deploy the airbags .
Front airbags will not deploy:
- if the ignition is switched off when a crash oc-
curs,
- in side collisions, - in rear-end co llisions,
- in rollovers,
- when the crash deceleration measured by the
airbag system is less than the minimum thresh­
old needed for airbag dep loyment as registered
by the electronic control u nit.
The front passenger airbag also will not
deploy:
- when the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the e lectrical capacitance measured by
the capacitive passenger detection system for
the front passenger seat indicates that the pas­
senger side frontal a irbag must be switched off
by the electronic control unit (the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light¢ page 160 and how they
work comes on and stays on).
_&. WARNING
Sitt ing in the wrong posit ion can increase the
risk of serious injury in crashes.
- To reduce the r isk of injury when the airbags
inflate, the driver and passengers must al­
ways sit in an up right posit ion, must not
lean against or place any part of their body
too close to the area where the airbags are
located .
- Occupants who are unbe lted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it unfolds with great
force in the blink of an eye¢

coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned. Wait unt il no steam or coolant is

- For safety reasons, the hood m ust always be
closed securely while driv ing . Because of
this, a lways check t he hood afte r closing i t
t o make sure it is latched correct ly . T he
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.
- If you no tice that t he hood is not latched
while you are d riving, stop immed iately and
close it, because driving when the hood is
not latched increases the risk of an accident .
