the ignition off and then on to switch the ESC on again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys ­
tem is functioning fully .

If the
II (USA models)/ m (Canada models) in­
d icator light turns on or blinks, there is a mal ­
function in a safety system such as the airbag or
be lt tensioner system .
Drive to an authori zed Audi dealer or authorized
Aud i Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunct ion corrected .
_& WARNING
Have the malfunct ion in the safety systems
inspected immediately . Otherwise, there is a
r isk that the systems may not activate during
a collision, which increases the risk of serious
injury or death.

The engine is preheating if the II indicator light
turns on when the ignition is switched on .
If the indicator light does not turn on or blinks
while driving, there is an engine control malfunc­
t ion.
Immediate ly drive s low ly to an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility to have
the malfunction corrected.
C Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is part of
the On Board Diagnostic system (OBD II) . The
¢4 c;ymbol turns on when the ignition is sw itched
on and turns off aga in once the engine is started
and running at a steady idle speed. This indicates
that the MIL is f unct ion ing correctly.
The indicator light turns on if there is a malfunc­
t ion in the engine electronics . See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fac ility to
have the malfunction corrected. Fo r additional

er cap is not closed correctly

_r~ Diesel particulate filter

filter
II Particulate filter: System fault See owner's
manual
The diesel particulate filter requires regenera­
t ion . To support the filter 's self -clean ing func ­
t ion:
Drive for approximately 15 minutes at 37 mph
(60 km/h) or above in the S selector lever posi­
t ion . Keep the engine speed around 2,000 RPM .
The temperature increase that will result from
t hi s can burn off the soot in the fi lter. The indica­
tor light wi ll tu rn off when the cleaning has com-
pleted successfully. .,..

General information
Breaking in
A new vehicle must be broken in, and the break­
in distance should be 1,000 mi les ( 1,500 km). Do
not drive at speeds that w ill exceed
2/3 of the
maximum permitted engine speed
(RPM) for the
first 600 miles (1,000 km) , and avoid full accel­
eration during this period . You may gradually
start increasing the
RPM and the speed between
600 miles (1,000 km) and 1,000 miles (1,500 km).
During the first hours of use, the engine has a
higher internal friction than later on when all
moving parts have settled into place with each
other.
How the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000
miles (1,500 km) also affects the engine quality.
Drive at moderate engine speeds after the initial
break-in per iod, part icularly when running a cold
engine . This will reduce engine wear and improve
the mileage .
Do not drive at too
low of an engine speed (rpm).
Shift down if the engine stops running "smooth­ ly" . Extremely high eng ine speeds are automati ­
cally reduced .
New tires
If your vehicle is running on new tires, drive pa r­
ticularly careful for the first 350 miles (500 kilo­
meters) after fitting .
.&_ WARNING
-
New tires tend to be slippery and must also
be "broken-in". Be sure to remember this dur­
ing the first 350 miles (500 kilometers).
Brake gently . Avo id following closely behind
other vehicles or other situations that might
require sudden, hard brak ing.
Avoid damaging the vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that low-

lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged .
T h is is espec ially true for veh icles with low-slung
chass is (sports chassis)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Warming up/cooling down
Appl ies to: Sand RS models
By warming up/cooling down the engine careful­
ly, you can he lp reduce unnecessary strain on
your vehicle when driving in a sporty style.
The engine speed is limited when the engine is
cold -the full engine output is not available.
When the engine is at operat ing temperature,
the engine speed limitation moves to a higher
RPM range. The tires also only reach their full
road holding capab ility once they have warmed
up .
Your vehicle also has an after-run cooling fea­
ture . However, cooling down is still important.
The engine and the brakes as well as the exhaust
system and the transmission become very hot
when driving in a spo rty style . Before you shut
the vehicle off, you should cool down the vehicle
by driving a few miles at low speeds with light ac­
celeration.
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to reduce the risk of vehicle
damage when driving through water, for example
on flooded roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the bot­
tom of the vehicle body .
- Do not drive faste r than walking speed.

After driving through water or mud, the effec-
tiveness of the brakes may be reduced due to
moisture on the brake rotors and brake pads.
A few careful brake applications should dry
off the brakes .

Economical and environmentally-friendly
driving
The amount of fue l cons umption, the env iron­
men tal impact and the wear to the engine,
b rakes and t ires dep ends mostly on your dr iv ing
style. W ith an anticipatory and economic driv ing
s tyle, f ue l consumption can be reduced by ap­
p roximate ly 10-15% . The following tips will help
you conserve the environment and your money at
the same time .
Anticipatory dr iving
A veh icle uses the mos t fu el when a cce le ra ting.
W hen you dr ive wi th ant icipat ion, you do not
need to brake as often and so you ac celerate less .
When possib le, let your ve hicle coast wit h a
gear
engaged ,
for example, when you notice that the
next traffic light is red. This produces an engine
braking effect, which helps to protect the brakes
and tires and reduces the emissions a nd fuel con­
sumpt io n to ze ro (f uel shut-off dur ing decelera­
tion) .
Shift efficiently
An effective way to save fuel is to upshift earlier.
Staying in a gear too long uses fue l unnecessari­
ly .
Press down on the acce le rator peda l slowly and
avoid "k ick -down" .

Avoid full acceleration
You should rarely travel at the maxim um vehicle
speed. Hig h speeds cause a disproportionate ly
high increase in fue l cons umption, emissions and
traffic noise. Slowe r driving saves fue l.
Reduce idling time
The Start-S top system * helps to re du ce the idling
time automat ic all y. In ve hicles withou t the Star t­
Stop system *, i t is efficient to sw itch the engine
off when stopped at railroad crossings and long
red lights. Stopping the engine for 30-40 sec­
onds a lready saves more fue l than the amo unt of
extra fue l needed to restart the engine.
It takes a very long time in id le to warm the en­
gine up to operating temperature. Wear and
emissions are especially high in the warm- up
phase . Therefore, you shou ld begin driving im­
med iate ly after starting the engi ne. Avoid high
RPMs wh ile doing this.
Have maintenance performed regul arly
By having maintenance pe rformed reg ula rly on
your vehicle, you can help to reduce fuel con­
sumption before you even start to drive. The
mainte nance condition of your vehicle not on ly
affects traffic safety and long- term value but al­
so im pacts
fuel consumption . A poorly main­
ta ined engine can lead to fuel consump tio n t hat
i s 1 0% hig he r th an no rm al.
Avoid short trips
The eng ine and exhaust clean ing system must
r each their op tima l
operating temperature to ef­
fect ively reduce consump tion a nd emissions.
A cold engine uses a d isproportionately high
amount of fuel. T he eng ine reaches operat ing
temperat ure and cons umption no rma lizes only
af ter approximate ly
2.5 miles (4 km).
Check the tire pressu re
To save fue l, make sure the t ires are always in­
flated to t he correct press ure
r=':>page 221. The
fuel consumpt ion can increase by 5% if the pres­
s ur e is only 0 .5 bar too low . Due to t he i ncreased
r oll ing resis tance, low tire p ressures w ill also

Easy seat entry
Applies to: vehicles with power steering wheel adjustment
Easy seat entry makes it easier to enter and exit
the vehicle by adjusting the steering column au­
tomatically.
• In the Infotainment system, select the ICARI
function button > ( Car )* Sys te m s control but ­
ton
> Vehicl e setting s > Seat s > Driver's s eat >
E as y seat entry > On .
When easy seat entry is switched on , the steering
column goes back up into the park position when
the ignition is switched off . After entering the ve­
h icle, the steering co lumn returns to the stored
position once the ignition is switched on.

when starting the engine in colder tempera­

If you wo uld like to sw itch the igni tion on w ith­
out starting the engine, follow these steps:
• Press the
!START E NGINE STOP ! button with­
out press ing the brake peda l. Vehicles witho ut
t he Star t/Stop system*: the need le in the tach­
ometer moves into the
READY position .
• To switch the ignition off, press the button
again . The needle in the tachometer moves into
the
O FF position .
T he prewarming runs automatica lly in diesel
vehicles when the ignition is switched on .
E quipment tha t uses a lot of e lectr icity is sw itch­
ed off temporarily when you start the engine .
If the engine does not start immediately, the
start ing procedure stops automat ically after a
sho rt time. Repeat the s ta rting proced ure.
Start /Stop system *
Read the informat ion in¢ page 71, Start-Stop
system .

To reduce the risk of poisoning, never a llow
the eng ine to run in confined spaces .

switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off af­

Emergency off function*
If i t is absolutely necessary, the engine can also
be turned off while dr iv ing in the R o r D/S se lec­
to r lever position at speeds below 6 mph (10 km/
h). To stop the engine , press and hold t he
I START ENGINE STOP I button and also press the
b rake pedal.

- Never tu rn
off the engine before the veh icle
has come to a comp lete stop. The full func­
t ion of the b rake booster and the powe r
steering is not guaranteed . Yo u may need to
use more force when braking or s teer ing.
Beca use you cannot brake and stee r as you
us ually wou ld, this could lead to accidents
and serious injur ies.
- Always ta ke the key with you w hen ever you
l eave yo ur vehicle. Othe rw ise, the engi ne
c oul d be s ta rt ed o r elec tri ca l eq uip me nt
s u ch a s the power windows cou ld be operat­
ed. This can lead to se rious i njur y.
- Fo r sa fety reasons, always park the ve hicle
with the se lector lever in the P position.
Otherwise, there is the risk that the vehicle
cou ld roll unintentionally .

I f the eng ine has been under heavy load for
an extended per io d of t ime, hea t builds up in
the engine compartment after the eng ine is
sw itched off and there is a risk of damaging

It can also switch on again after some time if

Messages
Turn off ignition before leaving car
This message appears and a warning tone sounds
i f you open the drive r's doo r when the ign it ion is
switched on.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if yo u do not p ress the
brake peda l when starting the engine.
II Key not in vehicle?
This indicator light turns on and this message ap­
pears if the ignition key was removed from t he
vehicle when the engine was running.
If the ig ni­
tion key is no lo nger in the vehicle, you cannot
swi tch on the igni tion or st art the engine once
you stop it. You also cannot lock the vehicle from
the outside .
Shift to P, otherwi se vehicle can roll aw ay.
Door s do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message a ppears for safety reasons if t he
t ransm iss ion is not in the P posi tion when you
swi tch the ig nition off. Move the selec to r l ever to

the vehicle is stationary

• The eng ine starts again when you take your
foot off the b rake pedal. The indicator light

The engine stops in the P, N and D selector lever
positions .
If you select the R position dur ing a stop phase,
the engine will start again.
Shift to P quick ly to prevent the engine from
starting unintent ionally when shifting through R.
You can determ ine fo r you rself if the engine will
stop or not by reducing or increasing the amo unt
of force you use to press the brake pedal. For ex­
ample, if you only lightly press on the brake ped­
al in stop-and-go traff ic or when turning, the en­
g ine will not switch off when the vehicle is sta­
tionary. As soon as you press the brake down
harder , the eng ine will switch off .

The standard Start/Stop mode con be canceled
for various system-related reasons.
Engine do es not switch off
Before and dur ing each stop phase, the sys tem
checks if certain conditions have been met.
If the
rjJ indicator light appears in the instrument clus­
ter display, the eng ine will not be stopped, for
example in the following situat ions:
- The engine has not reached the minim um re­
quired temperature for Start/Stop mode.
- The interior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside tempe ra tu re is extremely high/low.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted® .
- The parking system* is be switched on .
- The vehicle battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is turned at a sharp angle or
is moving.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp inclines.
Engine automatically restarts
The standard S tart/Stop mode w ill be canceled
d uring a stop p hase in the following si tuations.
The eng ine restarts without any action by the
driver.
- The vehicle ro lls, fo r example while on a slope .
- The inte rior tempe rature differs from the tem-
pe rat ure selected in the A/C system.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted® .
- The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row .

Ignition i s switched off automatically
To prevent the veh icle battery from draining, the
ignit ion will sw itch off
automaticall y under the
following conditions :
- The vehicle must have already been driven.
- The Start/Stop system has stopped the engine.
- T he driver's door must be open.
- The driver's safe ty be lt must be unb uck led.
- The brake pedal must not be p ressed .
- The veh icle must be stationary .
In this case, the activated low beam is replaced by the parking light. The parking lights will
switch off after app roximately 30 minutes or
when yo u lock the vehicle .
If the Start/Stop system has not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start/Stop sys­
tem off manually, the ignition will not be auto­ mat ical ly switched off and the engine w ill contin ­
ue to run~&. .
A WARNING
To red uce the r isk of poisoning, never allow

@ Tips
If you select the Dor N se lector lever position
after sh ifting into reverse, the vehicle m ust
